Remember in Vanyel's books, how you find out that ppl and thingscan be reborn into different species or companions, I think what happened was that Kalira died before she met Lavan, and was re-born as a companion. . .thi scould also be due to the fact that she is the only one who can keep his powers under control. . . Lavan and Kalria are from Misty's newest Valdemar Book, Brightly Burning. It is the story of Lavan Firestorm who is mentionned in Arrows of the Queen I was wondering what Serpants Shadow is about. I haven't seen it in any f the stores around here (not that that is too surprising) and I know that it is one of her fairy tale based books, but which fairy tale is it based on? Also, I remeber reading a short story once that was abou ta girl who went to a minstrals convention or something and she was ridiculed cause they find out that she is a girl. Then she meets up with this other group of mistrels that are kind of rebels and the story ends with her going off with the rebels. I was wondering if someone could enlighten me as to which of her antholgies that is in, because I can not remember it. If I recall, it is te same girl from one of the Bardic books. Not only do we have people who shudder at the cost of buying a hardback here in the US, there are people from other countries who sometimes have to wait over a year until they can even get their hands on that (although there are people here trying to help those they know about). I think it's safe to say that any reference to BB (Brightly Burning), Beyond World's End (BWE) and Serpent's Shadow (SS?) at the very least should always be preceeded by a spoiler; even if you don't think you're giving something away put in a spoiler and let those who have yet to read it make the decision. Example (and there really is a spoiler after this, so you are warned): Serpent's Shadow Spoiler below * S * P * O * I * L * E * R * (you can be more creative than that, but IIRC 16 lines is about what you want). Has anyone re-read the Firerose after reading Serpent's Shadow? I've been meaning to dig mine up, and see how they are the same and how they are different. One thing I liked (and wondered how it would tie in to Velgarth one day) is that Shadow has two different kinds of magic - not two ways of using magic, or various levels of magic use (although there seems to be that within each of the two ways). Made me wonder if Velgarth may eventually have a mutation of other kind of magic ... esp. after the mage storms. Just a thought - please use a spoiler in your reply. I think she's Lark. There's also "Robin and Kestrel" and "The Eagle and the Nightingale" which each showed off one male and one female "free bard". There was a fourth book that with a different focus called "Four and Twenty Blackbirds". There was also a collaboration with Josepha Sherman called "A Cast of Corbies: A Novel of Bardic Choices". These are not set in the Valdemar "world" of Velgarth, but on the world of "Alanda". All 5 books together make for an interesting universe of musical magic. I would recommend reading the first 3 books and if you are hungry for more of Alanda and the Free Bards, read "A Cast of Corbies" before "Four and Twenty Blackbirds." -----Original Message----- Also, I remeber reading a short story once that was abou ta girl who went to a minstrals convention or something and she was ridiculed cause they find out that she is a girl. Message-ID: Here's a thought about "Brightly Burning," plus spoiler space. Thanks, Julia, for the reminder -- I’d forgotten that many people don't read hardbacks, so just because I've had it for more than a year doesn’t mean everyone else has. And for those who haven't read BB, here's another thought I had, so this message isn’t a complete waste for you. (Well, it may be anyway, but at least you'll have the chance to read something and *then* decide it was a waste of your time.) >Moonstalker writes: > what i was wondering is that over time and through >the novels the > healing has advanced enough so that the healers who are >speed > healing Talia can do it while she is consious. this brings up > >quite an advancement in the healers' work etc. Li'nia Stormdancer writes >The Healers do seem to have advanced a little bit, although I must argue >that Stef's abilities had more to do with pain-blocking >than Healing. But, the Healer's do seem to have figured out a way to do >that without the music, since they use it on Talia. However, doesn't the >person still lose some consiousness with the pain-blocks? Doesn't Talia >refuse them for a little while as she's trying to tell everyone what >happened? Talia refuses the painblocks and gets healed while she's conscious because she can actually help the Healers with her own Mindhealing Gift and with her link to Rolan, if she's conscious. I got the distinct feeling that Devan would much rather have done it the other way, with Talia pain-blocked and unconscious, and that her being conscious was unusual. So I think that the fact that Talia is conscious while she's being speed-healed has more to do with her unique Gifts than it necessarily does with advances in Healer technology. Now: "Brightly Burning" Spoilers .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. >Okay, every one is talking about how the herald companion bond is like a >life bond, in that it is Soul to soul. Well I recall Lavan and his >Companion(Sorry don't rememer the name and my copy of that is out of my >hands at the moment) being lifebonded. How does this make there bond >diffent? other then the obvious "Lavan won't fall in love" Reason I mean. > >becca >From Brightly Burning, p. 144: " ::This is not just Kalira's Choice," Satiran said hesitantly [to Pol.] ::I think – I think it’s a lifebond.::" That would seem to indicate that most Herald/Companion bonds are not lifebonds, since Pol is awfully surprised by the news. It would also perhaps indicate that Choosing is less tight than a lifebond, since the way I read that passage, at least, is that Satiran is saying that Lavan isn’t "just" Kalira's Choice, but is something more than that, ie, a lifebond. Also, I don't think Lavan being lifebonded to Kalira necessarily means that he won't fall in love. Aren't Keren's bonds with Ylsa and Sherrill both considered lifebonds? And I thought there was a hint that if Sherrill has spoken up sooner, both bonds would have been recognized while all three parties were still alive (ie, Ylsa didn't have to die in order for Sherrill and Keren to bond.) So I think you can, if you are very lucky, have multiple lifebonds. In fact, I know the Talia/Rolan relationship has been discussed at length here, but it's not inconceivable that it might be a form of lifebond. Which would mean that Talia has two bonds, one with her Companion and one with Dirk, and that might be part of why it was possible for Dirk and Rolan to link up. Or their mutual bond with Talia may just have made it a lot easier to do.
