I agree. There seem to be three kinds of relationships in the Velgarth books: 1) happy, stable, permanent relationships, either lifebonded (Talia and Dirk) or not (Kerowyn and Eldan)) 2) happy flings between friends that end with no hard feelings (Nerissa, Talia's neighbor) 3) friendships that temporarily incorporate sex until both friends mutually end the sex part but remain friends (Sayvil and Andy; Kris and Talia) I'm sure in the second and third instances, the other partner would happily step aside in favor of the lifebond (and Kris actually did, of course), but it would be really interesting to see what would happen if someone in a deeply committed relationship then discovered a lifebond. >The closest I think Misty has come to it was the mention of Teren's being >choosen when he's married with kids, and he abandons the marriage (which >probably wasn't all that great, given some of the comments made) to be a >Herald. Really? I mean, I think you're right, but the only comment I remember about Teren's marriage was that he tried to make it work after he was Chosen, and it didn't. Work out, that is -- I got the sense that his wife didn't really "get" what it meant to Teren to be Chosen. I've also always wondered what happened to his kids, given that, from their point of view, he abandons them in order to spend all his time with a bunch of other kids who happened to get Chosen. And, for someone who genuinely cares about kids the way Teren does, it's odd that he doesn't seem to be in closer contact with them than he is. >dunno. I just thought that might be a "real" thing... couples break up all >the time - seems precious few of Misty's romantic relationships have that >type of problem... Exactly. I can't think of any relationships (other than Teren's marriage) that ended unhappily with one partner wanting more than the other, which seems slightly unrealistic -- as they often point out, the Heralds are human, not saints, and perfectly good, nice people are very capable of making total hash out of their private lives. They were an unhappily broken(in Firesongs Point of View) up couple. Of course the fact that Silverfox was there to step in right away was not quite as realistic, but it still happened. Sorry bout the sort post, but I can't think of anything else to say.
