The first book was a trial to get through, but the next two in the trilogy were better! I think the third was the best!! I also thought the pictures were pretty neat in the book too, and the covers were pretty spiffy IMHO. Just my two cents. I think I raced through them a bit much, and on a second read (just recently) I found them very fascinating - but not so much from a "plot" perspective as a detail perspective - namely, the geographic detail... The whole bit on the pass they come to that was originally introduced in Magic's Price was cool. And as a resident of Seattle, I definitely recognized her description of the places... Its here I finally realized (perhaps incorrectly) that White Gryphon is actually far to the WEST and not the east, as I had thought??? Why did I come up with that one?? "Purple" is not a spectral color at all. "Violet" is part of the visible spectrum, but "purple" is a color that is created by the blending of red and blue visual impressions. Boy, you'd think that Misty hadn't spent any time studying color theory and visual perception *giggle*. > And more fluff... Some of us are quite ancient, others are quite young, and many are somewhere in the middle. Adding to confusion is that sometimes age and identity don't match. For example, for a while, Heather (who remembers Heather?) and I were the "Venerable Elders" of the list although neither of us are particularly old. I read all the Velgarth books to date (that I know of) with the exception of some of the Kethry/Tarma short stories located in the Sword/Sorceress anthologies. The owls series was a light read, but I have a feeling if it was my first Velgarth book I don't think I would have understood some of the events and people mentioned. Reading the other books gave me a nice frame of reference, so reading the Owls series told me what happens to a few characters from earlier books. One thing I usually like about Mercedes Lackey's books is that she doesn't dwell on old characters, that she allows the new trilogies to have their own life. She digressed from this a bit when she wrote the Owls series by dwelling too much on Firesong (its been a few years so my memory is a bit vague and I've read a ton of books since this series). I do feel that she spent more time on developing some of the supporting characters then she did on developing the main character. That was my one true disappointed. My favorite though was the fact that we were exposed to more environments, which was greatly needed for readers to learn more about the world of Velgarth. I currently have 3 books of Mercedes Lackey's that I haven't read -- Black Swan and the two new ones which titles allude me this early in the morning. I personally haven't had much trouble finding Misty's works at used book stores, but maybe I've just been lucky! lol And for that last question, yes, I read and re-read my books! If you were to look at my bookcases, you'd find that most of my books are worn (and I TRY to take care of them, but you can only do so much! lol), and they started out new. Misty is one of the authors I've done this to, but there are a slew of others (Eddings, MZB, Rowley, Kinnealy, Green, etc.). I was not impressed with the first "Owl" book, and didn't even bother to buy the second book when it came out. I was leafing through the third book, however, and decided to go ahead and read the whole trilogy. I liked the 2nd and 3rd books much better! And, as for me, I'm 26, but hardly think of myself as "old"!! lol How could I be, since I still collect toys (Voltron and JapAnime figures) and watch cartoons all the time!!!
