Right, to introduce myself.. ~clears throat~
My name's Gail and I'm thirteen, probably quite a bit
younger than a lot of the people on the list. I've read
nearly all of the Heralds of Valdemar books except for
the last two in "Owls." I've read a few of her other
books as well, like "The Black Swan" and "The Fire
Rose," but I didn't think they were quite as good.
(Same goes for Arrows). I also love Lois McMaster
Bujold, Melanie Rawn, Orson Scott Card....

Heyla list-sibs,
Some of you already know this, I'm sure, but my name is Charlotte, and
I'm 18. I'm from California, but I'm currently at New York University, as a
special education major (I"m obviously not in it for the money...). As far
as Owls..I'm sure that this topic has come up more than once recently, but
I'll put my two cents in again...I didn't like the first one, could barely
get through the second, and didn't bother with the third. Though recently,
I've been thinking about reading all three, starting at the beginning again,
just because they are the only Misty books that I haven't read.
Alright...back to lurkdom for me....

Okay...Firesong is originally from k'Vala Vale (ref Mage Winds books) and
was called to k'Treva to help with the rogue heartstone. How then is he
referred to as Firesong k'Treva in the Owl books?>>
Actually, according to Winds, Firesong was called from k'Treva to k'Sheyna
by Darkwind and the gryphons, with Elspeth's help. Remember, it was k'Sheyna
Vale that had the rogue Heartstone, not k'Treva.
Furthermore, in WoFury, after Vanyel redirects the Gate to bring Our Heroes
to the Forest of Sorrows, Firesong gets in contact with his parents who are
in k'Treva in order to tell them what happened.
...If I recall correctly, anyhow.
That doesn't answer the question of how k'Vala fits into this, though. I was
never clear on that either.

Isn't his a cute little chain of letters? Here I go. I'm 18, finishing my
senior year in a suburb outside of Boston, MA, but will be living in New York
this coming fall. My first Misty book arrow trilogy, which I devoured. I then
went on to read every book in the series, all at least 3 times, some 4. I've
also read the free bards, a bunch of short stories, elvenbane series, and her
work in the Sword of knowledge. I reread a lot due to a huge lack of funds
and a constant need to have a book in my hands. I first read Misty about 4 or
5 years ago. That's me and my Misty history.

There is where my difficulty is...because at the point I am in the story, he
(Firesong) greets either Starfall or Snowfire as "Father" but they are
introduced as from k'Vala...How is that surname determined for the
Tayledras? Is it assumed depending on what they consider their current vale
of origin, or is it related to the Vale in which they were born and raised?

Heyla list-sibs! ::delurks::
I'm Cariad, seventeen, and in Ohio. I started reading Misty when I was in seventh grade--I stopped at the Library really quickly for books, and happened to grab "The Lark and the Wren" amongst other things. I read it all in one night [which isn't all that impressive for me, since I read *very* fast, but anyway...] and was hooked. I love how her world comes to life...and I love how she developed the government enough to have characters having a discussion about *why* they had to pay taxes. Anyway, that was my first of her books. After reading all three [that's all there was then] of the Bardic Voices books, I went on to try and read the Winds series -- because I honestly thought that that's where she started. After being horribly confused, I "left" and read other things for a while, then came to the realisation that the books actually *started* somewhere else. I've been reading them ever since. I've read everything except the Di Tregarde novels and the second two "storms" books, since I had trouble getting into the first one. My fave books are "The Lark and the Wren" and "The Oathbound" -- I want more Tarma and Kethry stories! I also *loved* "Serpent's Shadow"...: ) Anyway, that's all about me, probably more than any of you wanted to know!

Well, time for my 3.5 cents worth (inflation)...
I'm 28, and started reading Misty when the Science Fiction Book Club came
out with the Vanyel/Last Herald Mage compilation. It was kind of weird at
first, reading about a shaych character, especially when there very few main
characters in any books that are gay (at least any I read). I've got all
of the Valdemar series in hardcover now, mainly by going to used book stores
(a little slice of heaven for pennies on the dollar), and the Bardic Voices,
which I enjoyed, to be honest, only the first book (Lark & Wren). My
wife thinks I'm pretty odd to be soooo excited whenever a new Valdemar book
arrives, but I have not had this much fun in a fictional universe since either
Tolkien or Pratchett. There are other authors which float my boat (Jordan,
Weis/Hickman, Moorcock) but Misty's prose is special to me. Okay, back to
the lurking shadows for me...

along with The Last Herald mage, my favorites. However, I feel the need to
comment that contrary to popular opinion, thew Owl books were by far my least
favorite. (sorry 'bout that). I continualy felt that Darian was a
self-absorbed and not that likeable guy. Yeah, yeah, I know he's actually
quite nice in the second and third boks, but I just can't seem to get rid of
my image of him in the first book. Also, there are quite a few years between
each of the books, and I like continiueity (spelling?). Oh, well.
This isn't QUITE a oneliner, pretty close, but not quite, so bear with me.

Yup this was GREAT!!! My names Shannon 26 and live in NZ too. I was so glad
I went to this. Both she and Larry were amazing! Larry drew a picture of
Vanyel which got auctioned off for over $700 wow! She is really friendly
too and the stories they were telling just cracked me up and as for Larry's

On a book related note - she read us sopme chapters from her book to be

but.. not as good as a heralds one :)

i live in the bay area, CAlifornia. 14 yrs. old. High School's actually really fun. you find people with similar interests ;)
First Misty book i read was the silver gryphon. sixth grade, i think... absolutely hated it. Then my friend made me try reading the Last Herald Mage Trilogy and Oathblood and Now i'm hooked. i read everything i can get my hands on.
<>
i noticed that too. Not only that though, she has an odd way of writing her books. Most of the book is spent building up on background and character and then WWhamm!!, climax is near the end of the book; a lot of stuff happens and everything finishes up really quickly.
<>
Does she use any other names twice? The only other ones i noticed were Elspeth (obviously) and Medren (Vanyel's nephew and a servant or something in Arrow's of the Queen). i don't think she has any reason for using those names. they're kind of different and i don't think they're after any body she know's in real life.
ummmm... "Sheep In A Shop" to everybody (it's my favorite book; a very enjoyable read)
And Happy Belated Easter!

I can't quite remember when i started reading Misty, all i know is that i've haven't stopped since. I think i've may have read the Velgarth books in chronological order, gotta love those gryphons!!! Just started the SERRAted edge series, quite enjoyable so far. Liked the Elvenbane, enjoyed Free Bards. I read everything i can get my hands on, saved some of the 'recommended authors' posts for further use. Were Raymond E. Feist and Lynn Flewelling mentioned?? Anyway, must go back to the books, school ones, not the fun ones :( Which reminds me, for those who enjoy historical fiction, Joan Wolf and Morgan (?) Llyuwellen are fantastic!!!

Heyla listsibs,
Since everyone was introducing themselves, I thought I
may as well step forward and say hi. My name is
Sheridan, and I am 28, and currently residing in
London, although home is definitely New Zealand :).
Shannon, I had friends at the convention that Misty
and Larry were at - a friend of mine bought the sketch
of Vanyel - the first one he's done in 5 years, and
it's going to be the frontispiece for the Valdemar
Companion book - I am asking my friend for more
details on that book! I think the final cost was $750
(NZ). Someone else bought a promised sketch by Larry
(any subject). And Misty auctioned off some bead
jewellery and necklaces ... and computer disks copies
of her next 2 unpublished novels, Spirits of White
Lightning (about Skiff) and The Shadow of the Lion
(first in a new trilogy). I asked my friend about The
Shadow of the Lion, and it's a three volume fantasy,
set in medieval Europe (but she thinks
with magic - it's written by Misty and 2 others.
The first Misty books I ever read were The Last Herald
Mage, and they are my favourites :). I do enjoy the
Elven Urban Mage books too. However, I have to say
that I found the Owl series hard to get into. I am
looking forward to the book that Misty is hopefullly
going to write on Albrich though - does anyone know
when that is coming out?
Wind to thy Wings,
tamlin
PS My friend managed to get me Misty and Larry's
autograph, so I am rapt :)

I'm in London, ONTARIO (just so no one gets confused) studying to be a computer something. I'm
originally from Silicon Valley North, otherwise know as Ottawa and I plan to return there as soon
as the dreaded finals are over. :)
I honestly don't remember which Misty book I read first. It's all kinda a blur... Knowing me I
probably went through my mom's whole collection in one day. :) I've read everything except the new
stuff and a couple of T&K shorts. I loved _everything_ even the stuff nobody else seems to like.
My favs are Arrows and T&K.
'Kay, think that's more than enough.

I've been mostly lurking since I joined the list and I planned to continue
on with that trend, however I must correct what Katy said in her email.
Florida State University is NOT the best university in florida (or the
world, for that matter). That would be the University of Florida where I
attend, in Gainesville. Sorry Katy, but it's true. hehehe :) Go Gators!!
Anyways, I'm 22 and about to graduate here, and I've been a Misty fan for
about five years. Someone introduced me to Arrows of the Queen when I was
in High School, and I've never been the same since ;)
I've always loved fantasy though, the real world just sucks without magic,
doesn't it?
My latest read, however, is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. To anyone
who hasn't read the Harry Potter books (And I know we've had this
conversation before) I highly recommend them. They are fabulous!

Since it seems like everyone else chimed in I might as well too. I am a 20, almost 21 year old female computer science major, who will be transfering to UC Davis in the fall.
As for the owl series I think most of the time it did move rather slowly, but I still enjoyed it. It did not follow the troubled youth getting chosen and having a better life format, but rather followed the troubled youth getting adopted by the Ta'Leydras(sp) and having a better life...just kidding. But that does seem to be an underlying theme in most of Misty's books, a troubled youth or youthes, do this, or save that, but I guess the story would not be very interesting if the protagonist did not have any adversity to over come. I don't remember any stories that start out with the character in a great situation and it only gets better as the story progresses, that would be boring any how.
As for the knit picking in the stroies, I have also notinced a couple of errors or inconsistencies with some of the stories, but being that it is just a story and one that I enjoy reading I just ignore it and move on. It takes away from the flow of reading to dwell on it. However, I guess in retrospect it is okay, but by the time I am done reading I have already forgotten what the problem was oh well.
Okay, wow, that was longer than I thought it would be, sorry for rambling so much, this is what happens when I actually have time to think, ooooh scary...thinking.
Anyway raspberry sheep to all and a happy happy happy happy happy happy happy day.

I realize now that I was too brief in introducing myself! Again, I'm
Veronica. I'm an English major, Secondary Education minor (with a
computer endorsement tacked on the side) student at Indiana University
Bloomington in Bloomington, Indiana. No, I do not care about Mr. Knight
or anything else about sports for that matter. :)
I'm very new to this list...maybe two months tops. I first read Misty in
my splurge of reading I went through in high school. Since I got to
college, I haven't had much time for sleep much less outside-class
reading, so I haven't read any Misty or anything else for that matter for
two years. *sniffles*
My first Misty book was my freshman year of high school (6 years ago, I
reckon...I'm an English major, not a math one). It was the Arrows series
and, of course, I liked it very much. Within a month I read everything
else that my library had by her (not much...the Herald-Mage series and a
few odds and ends that weren't complete trilogies). At that time I was
also reading Hickman/Weis, Marion Zimmer Bradley, a few no-namers that
only had one book (so I can't recall them), and some other people whose
names escape me right now. I think my favorite series by Misty was the
Herald-Mages.
Hopefully I'll be able to dedicate part of my summer to Misty and books in
