I'm 39 and live in the Southern California mountains. The first book that I read was The Last Herald Mage omnibus that the Sci Fi book club put out, probably about 10 years ago. Since then I have enjoyed every Valdemar book that has come out. I have not had the chance to read any of Misty's other series, other than Black Swan, Firebird, Bedlams Bard and the Bardic Voices books. I have to admit that the Vanyel series is still my favorite (still re-read it when I need to escape), followed by just about anything set in the Vales. I also love Larry's art that has graced many of the later books. I'd love to see the omnibus re-issued with some of his artwork inside! (hint hint!!!!) While the covers that have been used by Jody Lee are great, I have always thought that his take on the images and people truly fit! Blessings to all and "snowman" sheep to all as we got 4-5 inches of snow last night! I believe she repeats 'Mero' as well as others mentioned (sorry, I haven't got my books with me). I believe there's a Tayledras/ Kaled'a'in name or two that get repeated. (Btw, anyone know why the Tayledras and Kaled'a'in still have descriptive names, but the Shin'a'in have more ordinary ones? Aside from the T&K stories being written before everything was tied together.) On the Owls books, I also didn't care for them. They were formulaic and obviously aimed at younger readers, and overall did not much impress me. I don't have anything in particular against Darien, but he didn't draw me, either. I was glad to see Firesong again, but I'm not sure about him in the role of wise older teacher. Ah well. I hope for better in the books to come. To join the general roll call, I'm 18 and finishing my first year of college in Massachusetts, which is also where I live the rest of the time (two hours away, though). Sheep-shaped chocolates to everyone dealing with finals. Ambermoon Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! He wasn't Chosen, he didn't have really nifty magical powers or mind-magic. He was just a "normal" human being beyond the whole firecat thing. It's nice to see that not everyone who is a hero has to have some kind of extreme gift, that sometimes heroes can just be a good human being. Message-ID: <384813460.987965154828.JavaMail.root-+AT+-web575-ec> Heyla list-sibs! Delurking to ask a question that's been in the back of my mind for a while, and I don't think I've ever posted it to the list. What would happen if someone was Gifted with the Bardic Gift, but they had no musical performing talent? If, for example, they were tone-deaf and couldn't carry a tune in a paper bag? I first thought of this situation while re-reading MPawn, where Van applies to Bardic, and they tell him you must have two of three: Bardic Gift, performing talent, and composition. So what happens if you have the Bardic Gift without the other two, what happens then? Do they let you stumble around on your own, or do they admit you for training because uncontrolled gifts are dangerous even though you don't meet all the criteria? Just a little something to ponder. : ) Wind to thy wings, *Cariad* ----------------------------------------------- FREE! Well, on to business! I liked Karal as a hero too... very nice change of pace. Not the usual, you know. I'd like to see more character like him, as I personally think they make the books more interesting to read, not just the same old same old. :) Yeah, I think Abby's right... I vaguely remember Misty repeating a Tayledras name. (Not that I blame her - I doubt I'd be able to come up with /half/ the names she uses!) You know, I was wondering too why the Shin'a'in have names that are of such a different sort from their Tayledras relatives... hmm. I wonder if Misty will work this in somewhere later? The Owl books were alright, I think. Not to be compared with V&H or LHM, but they didn't strike me as terrible or anything. I could definitely see they were aimed at the YA-ish crowd, but I did enjoy them as a nice, relaxing read. I rather liked being able to see Firesong again (being more mature and all... even if it is a bit off-character for him) and the cameo from Kero was a nice touch. I thought the relationship between Keisha and Darien was... nice. In that sweet, romantic, happily-ever-after way that isn't really very realistic, but is very nice to read once in awhile. :) The characters of Darien and Keisha were nice, if not a bit too-good-to-be-true. On the roll call bit, I'm a 17 year old high school junior currently in New England for boarding school, and originally from England. :) Well, that's about it! Good luck, de-stressing sheep to all (especially those studying for APs ;)! Always, Andrea _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2575 **********************************
