IIRC, Savil mentioned the irony that Vanyel did indeed get a measure of the Bardic Gift when his channels were blasted open. The irony was that Vanyel had previously been told that he had no Bardic Gift, even though he desperately wanted to be a Bard more than anything else in the world. (I know, that all changed once he met Yfandes! lol) B B S P O I L E R S P A C E Also, someone mentioned the similarities between Lavan and Vanyel. I saw that as well! Both had been abused (either mentally, physically, or mentally) during their childhood, and had rather traumatic events happen to trigger their Gifts' emergence. Both had slightly odd Companions (in the way they behaved, I mean), and both went on to have difficult love lives. (Van 'cause he was shaych and Lavan 'cause he was bonded so tightly to his Companion.) And both had "Glorious Endings" (sarcasm there, folks!) that helped save Valdemar.
