In short, he's one of the Herald Mages acting as an instructor at the Collegium when Vanyel first arrives. He's a friend of Vanyel's aunt Savil, although he's younger than she is. If you haven't read the first book, these will be massive spoilers.... If you have, and just need reminding, here's the rundown (plus commentary, of course, because I happen to like Jaysen a lot, and think that Jaysen's actions go a long way towards showing that Savil made the wrong call in "Magic's Pawn"): .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Jaysen is the Herald who starts off rather homophobic (saych-phobic?) in "Magic's Pawn," and the one whose leaking thoughts reaffirm Vanyel's own feeling that Tylendal's death was Vanyel's fault, thus leading directly to Vanyel's attempted suicide immediately after Tylendal's death. In Jaysen's defense, Savil and her students never confided the Vanyel/Tylendal relationship to Jaysen, so after the Gate Incident, the idea that Vanyel must have somehow corrupted Tylendal, or at the very least been egging him on, is not unique to Jaysen, and is certainly not an unreasonable idea, given the great lengths that they all go to in order to "prove" that Tylendal and Vanyel actually hate each other. After Tylendal's death, there's certainly no particular reason for Jaysen to suspect the depth of Vanyel's bond, given that Savil herself, who saw them every day, is only beginning to suspect that it was a lifebond. I think Jaysen's leaking thoughts have a lot more to do with his grief for Tylendal, whom he knew and liked, than a particular dislike for Vanyel (who did go out of his way to be seen as unlikeable), or to a deep-seated homophobia (since there's no question that he liked the obviously saych Tylendal). To his credit, Jaysen realizes his mistake immediately (after being smacked with an emotional broadcast from Vanyel), realizes exactly what he's done, feels immensely guilty about it, and goes out of his way to try to fix things, in the process becoming a close friend of Vanyel. ML (and Savil) make the point that Jaysen's homophobia is rooted more in ignorance and in the mores of the the society that he grew up in (a rather rural northern district) than a particular close-minded hatred. I also think that Jaysen's reactions show that Savil was wrong not to trust the basic decency of the other Heralds and Trainees, instead of setting Vanyel up as a spoiled brat, and thus leaving him with almost no support when Tylendal is deciding on his revenge scheme. I actually like Jaysen a lot. I think it's a lot harder to recognize one's mistakes and make reparations for them than it is to be right the first time, and very hard to recognize one's prejudices and deal with them head on. I assume that the Herald Jaysen of Vanyel's time is also the Companion Jaysen who Chooses Daren, which I find interesting. In some ways they are quite similar: rather blunt, decent men, occasionally wrong (see also Daren's early treatment of Kerowyn), but fundamentally good-hearted and willing to admit their mistakes and change.
