I always wondered (after the gryphon books) if those weren't Maakar - especially since I think someone mentions that they know someone who was "attacked." But then with the revelation about Iftel and its "security teams" I had to rethink that notion - maybe they WERE gryphons on a sortie training run?? Any thoughts? Also, rereading the Arrows series - am I the only one who thought Talia's NOT talking to Dirk after Christa died was a big deal?? I mean in the first book she's taking care of EVERYONE affected by a Herald's death... I mean I know she's busy and all, but I thought it horribly lax of her not to at least try to seek out those who were closest to Christa and talk to them. -S ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 19:49:39 From: "Rebecca McAllister" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: gryphons Message-ID: >Also, rereading the Arrows series - am I the only one who thought Talia's >NOT talking to Dirk after Christa died was a big deal?? Number 1 would be that she had her hands full just trying to help Destria (the herald who had been with Christa). Destria was a lot more distressed about it then Dirk, consierinf she had locked herself in and wouldn't even let the healers help her. Number 2 is that I think that was while Dirk was trying to avoid Talia. Even if she had sought him out, She may not have been able to talk to him anyways. Just a couple of things in her defense. I thought, though, that no one knew that Dirk was that upset about Christa, and assumed that he was just moping about Talia. No one else had any clue that she was using her Gift to Fetch the children, and I'm not even sure that most people were aware that you *could* Fetch live creatures, let alone human beings -- Dirk shows Christa this as an extra, because she (like him) was especially good. Therefore, no one else had a clue why Christa was *in* the house, other than just the obvious reason that she was looking for the children -- they didn't know that she was Fetching them the way Dirk taught her, so they had no idea that Dirk might have felt guilty about it. Talia goes after the one or two people most affected by a Herald's death, not everyone who knew the Herald -- I think talking to *everyone* would be impossible -- and in this case the Herald most in need of help appeared to be Destria, Christa's mentor. Who did need help, badly. Usually, I think Talia's Empathy clues her in to the emotional needs of those around her, but I suspect that the muddled-lifebond issue probably clouded her perceptions of Dirk's feelings. And Kris is the only other person who might have guessed, or who Dirk might have talked to, and, of course, they weren't talking to each other then.
