Hi there I have to admit I found it really hard to get into the firebird, which was odd as I have always liked russian fairy tales. I guess I hit his sexual attitudes in the beginning and went "nuh!" I did like the others but yeah worked to the bone - wonder what she'd do with the story of the goosegirl and the horsehead nailed above the city gates.... cheers Shan CAUTION: This correspondence is confidential and intended for the named recipient(s) only. Anyhow two queries: a) I know people can become chosen via herlad web-site, but is there a similar thing for fire-cats??? as I would REALLY want one.... b) Somewhere I read that companions don't chose unitl they are ten. Has it ever been explained why - is it due to a need to grow/be educated? Because when thay are young they act just like normal horses as far as I know. If so, what would happen to a companion that grew up away from the rest? Would it instinctivly have the knowledge or what? I still haven't got the Internet at home - still trying to find a good ISP in the UK - but once I do :) I must admit that I found it very hard to read Firebird - I gave in - which for me is rather unusual! I am rereading the Serrated Edge books, and they are so good - meeting a Herald and a Companion would be amazing, but so would be meeting an Elf and an elvensteed :) Is Misty planning to write any more Serrated Edge books? I know she is currently writing the series about Eric Banyon, but does anyone know about any more in the pipeline? I do hope so :) Not sure about what would happen to a Companion growing up away from other Companions, but then wouldn't the rest know if a foal was missing and find it? Also, young animals (in general - there are always exceptions) stay quite close to their mothers, and it would be rather difficult to steal a Companion foal I think :)Good question though. I wonder when Companions become "self aware" so to speak? On that note . . . Believe that the Egyptians had a Goddess or God of cats -- someone help me out here -- all I can think of is Set or Bast, and not sure if either of those is right. I never did care much for Egyptian stuff, having seen the Mummy (the old original 1930s one with Boris Karloff when I was eight, and having it scare the bejeepers out of me). BTW, I liked the new Mummy a lot better. Spoiler space for Serpent's Shadow x x x x x x x I just reread the Serpent's Shadow, and Mercy makes reference to Marie Corelli. Does anyone know who this is? I assume she was a woman writer who thought a woman's place was in the home -- but I consider myself reasonably well-educated (three degrees), and have never heard of her. Also, am I the only one who was somewhat confused by all the various Hindu gods? Finally, an earlier writer said the book was based on Snow White. Frankly, other than the poisoned apple, I can't see much resemblance. Does anyone else? Bast(sometimes known as Bastet) is the one you're thinking of - Set was the crocodile god. And I believe you are also refering to Sekhmet, not Set who is another deity. Sekhmet was portrayed with a lion's head and a woman's body. Set happens to be Osiris's brother who murders Osiris in that particular myth. Hope I could shed some light on the subject. BTW, I liked the new Mummy a lot > better. 4,500 years ago, people understood that cats should be worshipped, and at Bubastis in the Nile Delta a temple was built to Bastet. She had a Lion's head then, but later a cat's head. When a Libyan chief based at Bubastis siezed the throne of Egypt, the whole country became enlightened. Most of them made a pilgrimage to Bubastis - some 700,000! Cats, as you probably know, are very fertile animals, and Bastet is associated with female fertility, warmth, love, dance and the moon. Other goddesses with similar associations are Artemis and Diane. When Typhon waged war on the goddesses, Diane escaped by turning into a cat! And in London, a sistrum (symbol of fertility used in worship of Egyptian fetility godesses) was found in a shrine to Diane. So it seems that Britain too may have worshipped Bastet! (The site was that of St Pauls). from http://www.poptel.org.uk/unholy/goddess/bastet.htm mttz tax zombie, curmudgeon 2nd class (still have good days, gotta work on that) ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2600 **********************************
