I find the Sovvan night in the middle of the book one of the most beautiful moments in all of Misty's works, and also his encounter at the end with Death. I think the book contains some of the most poignant and empathetic thoughts on life, death, love, honour and duty, and what keeps us going through all the grief of living. It also has my favourite Misty quotes: "Sex and love ~aren't the same thing. But love and friendship are so close you can't have love without having friendship," and "For some reason I never had any trouble figuring out what death was all about; but life--that's taken me until now." On the Mage Wars, I agree that the first book is wonderful, the second not so good, and the third not worth reading. For the fairy tale books, I liked _Firebird_ very much. I can't say I was shocked by Ilya's sexual attitudes; plenty of people today sleep around as well, and he didn't hurt anyone by his actions. I found Fire_Rose and Black_Swan unreadable, and I'm waiting till Serpent's_Shadow is stocked in the local library. A few non-Misty questions: Is there any connection between GGK's Sailing_to_Sarantium (which I shall read this summer) and the Yeats poem "Sailing to Byzantium"? Also, has anyone heard anything to do with Melanie Rawn, and is there the slightest chance we shall ever see the third book of her "Exiles" trilogy? Similarly, is there any news of Katya Reimann and her next book? Oh, I am so excited a question I can answer! I am on rawn's group too and the people in the know over there don't present a lot of hope. Captal's Tower will be written but she is writing several other books first and hasn't even started it (captals tower) yet. I think this is a good time to bring up a pet peeve of mine. It seems that lately there aren't very many books that are being written as stand alone books. A lot of them are trilogies, quartets, or god forbid quintets and it seems like it is getting longer and longer between books. There are two series that I am reading right now that are like that. ( the sun sword series by Michelle west and the series by Kate Elliott) Both of these authors put apologies in the front of the most recent books about the length between them and I appreciate that but it still frustrates me. Oh well, I guess I am done ranting now thanks for listening. David ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2611 **********************************
