Randale's father, HM Darvi, died of a broken neck while descending the stairs to a court function. It was said he simply slipped, and he and/or someone else would have been able to sound an alarm had Leareth a hand in it, by total reflex. > So my question is, Randale didn't have the mage > gift, yet he died of a > mysterious illness. Was that completely "natural" or > was it part of > Leareth's plot to destablize Valdemar before he > invaded? Someone said it sounded like cancer. No dramatic symptoms were mentioned, and again, Vanyel would have known had it been a mage draining Randale. I got the impression it was natural. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! And for that matter is there any record of what did in any of the other Grove Born companions? Especially perhaps, the original ones... Not to say that Leareth couldn't take advantage of timing but... In the first Owl books didn't Darin literally trip someone up by using a fetching gift? I would assume that something similar could be done by a spy attending the court function? Has there ever been word on the detectability of Mind Magic? I think it was Vanyel that said at one point that a Mage with Mind Magic would taint the Mind Magic with Mage energy and thus make a splash that could be detected and someone else (Kethry?) said that really powerful Mage shields can protect from Mind Magic. I seem to remember that she also said this still left the Mage vulnerable to things like fetching spell components out of the range of the Mage at a critical moment. I also got the impression that the reason it had to be really powerful was that mind magic operated on a different plain / level from regular magic and thus to get regular magic to affect mind magic plain cost a lot. This would imply to me that a Mage would not only be vulnerable to someone with a fetching gift but that the person doing the fetching wouldn't be detectable. Again this is not to say that it DID happen that way... only that it could have. Matt ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2620 **********************************
