One good chain that usually has lots of stuff is Half Price Books... But I've managed to find stuff at almost any used book store. The only problem is you have to keep checking back if you are looking for a specific title as the selection turns over fairly rapidly (in our area anyway) The problem I always have is trying to make a list of what I need and getting to the store and finding a book I've read but not being sure if it's one that I already have or if I read a library copy and don't own it. You might also be able to get one of the larger book stores to order it. I THINK (but I'm really not sure) that some will let you order on-line and pick up in the store. In which case you might not need a credit card... Good luck! I think that had Kris lived everything would have been worked out. Remember, when the caravan was moving across Valdemar Dirk begged his way into the trip so that he could talk to Kris and Talia. His main problem with jealousy was based on mis-communication and once he talked to them I am sure that jealously wouldn't have been a problem. Especially when he figured out that it was a lifebond. Plus, if he ever doubted Talia's feelings for him, she WAS an empath. She used that to her advantage once, I imagine that she would do it again, not that I think that she would have too. :-) Okay, well, chocolate covered gummi sheep to anyone who was able to disipher the above rambling ;-) Zhai'hellava, Starshadow* She'enedra to Lightsong Royal Defender of the Brat _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Jul 2001 21:50:53 -0400 From: Matt Neimeyer To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Dirk, NewbieFest, and lack of sheep Message-ID: <5.1.0.14.2.20010705211427.00a8dc28-+AT+-ambriel.youth-guard.org> >I was wondering how everyone felt about Griffon from the Arrows trilogy. >I personally always felt kind of bad for the poor guy. Some kind of "He's infatuated but I know better" thing? (Although I would think that she would have mentioned it) So she automatically takes him off the list? In a similar vein perhaps she doesn't notice? IE he's convinced he loves her and doesn't really so she doesn't notice the emotion since it's more a thought process than a true emotion. Plus trusting a friend, or any other Herald is kinda (to me) like trusting a police officer... you just do. (Not that their motives always align with yours but...). She may have put him on that list. When here she's listing those that she really trusts on a deeper level of trust. Or maybe, and most simply, he isn't infatuated he really is just being brotherly. >And another thing, what about the whole Karen Sherril and Ylsa thing. If >Talia is an Empath, how come she didn't sense her friends agony over not >being with her lifebonds. Sherril and Karen are listed as one of Talia >closest friends, and yet Talia doesn't even notice/ I just don't get it, >maybe I missed something in the Million times I've read the book. A couple of thoughts on this... First, in Talia's culture (if not most or all places in Valdemar) you don't often find same sex pairings so she may simply not have considered it or she misinterpreted it. This is my theory... Second, it simply could be that the lifebond didn't "activate" until needed as a mental/emotional crutch and therefore there was nothing to sense. Thirdly, maybe lifebonds simply don't "register" as extra special on the empathy scale. Talia never noticed hers (granted a blind eye there) and when looking at Vanyel's the "experts" said that it operated under or deeper than normal levels of detection in a sort of spiritual Siamese twining (which allowed Tylendal to use Vanyel's mage-potential and Vanyel to use Stefen's life force with the leech blade). In river terms a lifebond is flowing underground and you simply don't see it even when you are directly over it until or unless the ground crumbles out from under you or until it surfaces somewhere. He had one of the hardest and most unpredictable gifts to control, and he managed to do it with hardly any problems. And he turned out to be a big help in the later books. I always liked him, and I think Talia did too. He may have had enough problems that she felt she couldn't turn to him all the time, or maybe they just ended up being casual friends (which is how I read it). Sometimes it just happens like that... > And another thing, what about the whole Karen > Sherril and Ylsa thing. Sherril and Karen are > listed as one of Talia closest friends, and yet >Talia doesn't even notice/ I just don't get it, > maybe I missed something in the million times I've > read the book. I don't think the "channel" for the lifebond was active until Ylsa died. Keren already had the ties to Ylsa, and couldn't form another one. Sherril had the tie ready and waiting, but not actually active. It probably never would have sprung into a real lifebond if Ylsa hadn't died. So I don't think she was in any actual agony over Keren, but was just extremely attracted to her. I also felt that the bad guys were not well portrayed - too many and (execpt for the girl) not fleshed out enough. * Too much (yet too little) happening. In other words the main plotline was fairly simple and weak, and I felt that all this extrenious detail was through in to cover this up. * Finally the Ria/Eric realtionship. HELLO!!!! this sould have had WWAAYY more attention devoted to it - I felt cheated in the amount ot time /effort devoted to this. IIRC, the reason that she thought of Sherri after Ylsa died was becuase of Rolan. I'm sorry I don't have the text ev, but I believe she says that the thought "sprung unbidden into her mind", or something to that effect. Skif was an important character in the Winds series (and a very convenient and fully developed character for Misty to use) so he was trotted out for that. Speaking of "what happened to's", (punct?) I really like the one-liners in the later books that hint what/where Skif and Nyara, An'desha, and that priestly kid (Polish Blonde mind drawing a complete blank on that character's name at the moment.)
