with Pam, this is a list where people can express themselves, regardless of

You say tomato, and I say tohmato. There are a variety of age levels,
countries and education levels on this list, and not everyone's spelling or
grammar (or English) is going to be completely correct. Frankly, that's one
of the things I like about this list, that it attracts people from many
different backgrounds.
And as for nit picking, would one of the Counselors of Mist please remind
everyone about the purpose of braiding, vs. these one and two liners?
Nuff said.

Who do you think, of the first three heralds, died first? I think that it would be kind of scary to be a herald at the founding if I knew that every time a mare got pregnant that a herald had to die. I mean if it was the prince, he dies, comes back, and possibly has to chose his little bro' as the next heir. How would like to have to carry your little bro' on your back for the rest of your life? How would like to have to carry your >little bro' on your back for the rest of your life? I don’t think they realized. It's only been very recently that the Heralds knew that the Companions were reincarnated Heralds, so I don't think they made the connection between Herald deaths and Companion births. I also suspect that there's a delay between your death as a Herald and your reincarnation as a Companion, so I doubt you'd be a Companion for people you knew when you were alive. You might get a granddaughter or something, though, and I've always suspected that was the reason why some Companions don’t have names, or don't give them to their Chosen: because their name would have been too recognizable. A while ago, Susan Hill suggested that only the MO doesn't die of old age, but other grove-born Companions might: >Otherwise, it would have been mentioned that all those grove born >companions at the Founding weren't dying of old age - that they stuck >around until shot by an arrow or something. I think thats something that >would have been mentioned as part of the history - you know Herald >Chroniclers would have mentioned Heralds A, B, C, and D were all chosen by >Companion Y, until Companion Y's death during a battle with Herald D. >That just seems like too big of a set of details for it be "left out" of >the history lesson in Arrows. AND it would have meant that the Bards would >have made songs about Companion Y - the longest lived, bravest and wisest >and so forth. You know how Bards can be with such a history available to >them. I think the Companions make a real effort to keep in the background, so I'm not sure there would be songs about Companion Y, or that non-Herald Chroniclers would make the effort to record who was whose Companion. (And Heralds who live long enough to become scholars don't seem to record Companion history, and are perhaps nudged not to do so.) Elspeth jokes with Darkwind at one point about how he won't be able to tell the Companions apart when they get back to Haven. Even the sentry at the gate into Haven has to check Rolan's bridle tag when Talia arrives in "Arrows of the Queen," and you would think that if a non-Herald would recognize any Companion at all, it would be Rolan: the sentry even says he's been looking out for Rolan. Non-Heralds generally talk about the Companions as if they're clever horses (the villager in AFall describes how Christa's "horse" went in after her when she died in the fire), so I don’t think most non-Herald Bards or historians would fully understand why you would even bother chronicling the adventures of one of the Companions. I think that if Rolan does manage to outlive Talia, he will end up going out on search again for another MO. The MOC's duty really isn't to the specific Herald he's bonded with at the time, it's to the "job". He will continue to perform his duty until he's dead... And then he'll eventually come around again (as Rolan seems to have done). BTW, have there been any female MOC's? I can't remember correctly... I know that sounds rather cold, but it's the way I see it. On another topic... Di Tregarde novels. Someone asked which order they should be read in. I would say "Children of the Night" first, without a doubt. (Or the short story that it began as in "Werehunter".) The other two ("Jinx High" and "Burning Water") are pretty much stand alones; that is, you can read them in any order and still enjoy the story. That's what I did. I will admit, however, that "Jinx High" does have a small, itty-bitty tie-in with another series of Misty's... lol (For those who've not read it, I won't spoil it!) Jumping to another note... I know we have some newbies out there, and I have just one favor to ask of you... Please read the NewbieFest!!! In there, it explains about posting one-liners and about the use of "braiding" your messages. This saves the number of messages in our Sibs in-boxes, and some of us have to pay for each message and/or time spent in the mail-service. Also about please turning off HTML if possible... :) Oh, and please play nice in the Arena and the Hall! We have Sibs on here from all over the world, and Sibs who don't have books on hand to reference spelling of character names and/or places. We pretty much can figure out what everyone means, no matter how much we think someone else has "butchered" something... I know I've done my fair share of "butchering"... ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'd say that since Rolan wasn't human he would have a "job qualification" of being able to love'em and leave'em. In other words, where we might not be able to just cheerfully move on to the next "ultimate love" or "bond of a lifetime" for him it's part of his job and I'd assume that he's got the ability or he wouldn't have the job. >BTW, have there been any female MOC's? I can't >remember correctly... I know that sounds rather cold, >but it's the way I see it. Good question... It's been bandied about that there are four spirits that act as MOC. And it seems that two of them are currently unidentified. It also would seem that in a nice mystically (etc) balanced world you'd have two males and two females. Or other category pairings. (If they've been around that long is there such a thing as an "old" spirit and a "young" spirit?) Perhaps even going so far as to line up with the four elements? For those people in the UK, I've got a nearly mint condition paperback of Black Swan going and I'm looking for a (paperback type price, that's why I wanted the ppb pub date) copy of Beyond World's End. Quite happy to make it a mixture of cheque and the copy of Black Swan to make it a reasonable price. OK so I read the sample chapter on the Baen web site and I want a copy, but do I loathe Black Swan. Got to save my money for the Skif book, any idea on the UK publication dates for that? And any bets that I don't manage to wait the extra few months for that.
