I've seen the original, and it's awesome. I kept telling him he should draw it to scale, but he wanted the detail. Okay, it's not really 1:1, but it's awfully big. I'm quite certain that reduced to book page size it will not be done justice. We have plans afoot to make posters - so here's a question.. would you guys be interested? If there aren't enough takers, it won't happen see, and now I've got your attention.... Ooooh.... Of the whole world? Or just Valdemar? Or... >I'm quite certain that reduced to book page size it will not be done justice. Could it be done sectionally? (however, that's spelt). So that in the book you can see maps of Valdemar OR the different sections of Valdemar OR (if it's bigger) the area of the Silver Gryphon OR the Dhorisha Plains... etc.. >We have plans afoot to make posters - so here's a question.. would >you guys be interested? If there aren't enough takers, it won't happen >see, and now I've got your attention.... I'd be interested. Assuming the cost isn't horrible... In a nutshell, anything under $15 I'd probably get, anything from 15-30 I'd consider but I'd have to think real hard, and anything over that and I probably wouldn't do it. I mean that's two or three books (and if I'm shopping the used book stores even more) Could you guys do it as part of a set of something? Like a commemorative edition of... something? "Buy this boxed set and get a poster too" type thing? One other thought. Very low cost (but not as good resolution) Computer Wallpapers. Charge a dollar or thereabouts through Paypal (to avoid the cost of the Credit Card network) or something similar and use those dollars to defray the cost of printed posters. This way you need a lower return on the physical posters but are still able to offer them. Release the electronic version early and then depending on those sales determine if the physical is feasible. And of course, offer for free an even lower resolution wallpaper to increase interest. Jeri was a possiblitiy, and >so was some guy named Kemoc, and I THINK that Kris was a possibility too, I >am not sure about that though. *Elspeth* was the Heir Presumptive before she was Chosen, as in "we all presume that she will eventually be Chosen and will then be the real Heir." When Talia announces Elspeth's Choosing to Selenay, she says that the "Heir presumptive" has been Chosen and is now the "Heir-in-right." When Selenay makes the same announcement at the Council meeting, she says that Elspeth has been Chosen and is now "a fully-eligible *candidate* for the position of Heir," meaning that even after being Chosen, the eldest child of the Monarch is not automatically Heir: she still has to be appointed Heir, which Selenay does in the investiture ceremony a few weeks later. She was being pressured to appoint an Heir "pro tem" until Elspeth was Chosen, and the leading candidates were definitely Jeri, Kris, and Kemoc (who I don't think we ever see again). I think the idea was that even if Elspeth was Chosen, she wouldn't automatically become Heir, and that once there was someone else appointed Heir it might be harder to make the switch. I mean, any of the candidates would do a good job as Heir, and I imagine there would be people saying, look, Jeri (or whoever) has been such an excellent Heir, and Elspeth is still only a child and won't have full rights for a while anyway, let's just wait a few more years until she finishes her training. And then her internship. Etc. Although, to be fair, the idea that Valdemar needs an Heir isn't exactly sinister. If anything had happened to Selenay at that point, the succession would have been a nightmare: there was no appointed Heir, the Monarch's only child wasn't Chosen and therefore ineligible, and the Council -- and probably even the Heraldic Circle -- would have had a hard time agreeing on a candidate. And the second most powerful position in the kingdom, the one that should have been able to guide the government through a rocky succession like that, was held by a teenager who didn't even have full voting rights and who was distrusted by a good portion of the Court and some of the Council. As for Judi's problem, there are a couple of products that you can use to stick posters to walls without putting holes in the walls. I used to use something called "Plas-T-Tack" or similar. It's an adhesive with the consistency of silly putty. You put penny size globs on the corners of your poster and press firmly to the wall. I used this all through college and found that it was safe enough for dorm use, but sometimes left a small discoloration on the corners of some posters. I ended up laminating most of my favorite posters which solved that problem. ----------------------------------------- I'd definitely be interested if I could figure out a way to hang pictures without putting holes in my walls! Have you seen the Terry Pratchett / Discworld / Ankh-Morpork maps? I don't know if they came out in America but they make great pressies. Is Larry going to show where on the "modern" map the sites shown on the Gryphon and LHM maps are? Would definitely buy a download of that, which might be a lot cheaper than trying to do a, over the ages map now I think of it. Bad delete finger here, the guy who was talking about screen savers? When I was a kid, I had a lovely poster of a large-scale map of Middle Earth on my wall, with a little castle for Minas Tirith, a little village where Hobbiton would be, dotted lines showing where the quest had taken the Fellowship, and dragons and suchwhat all around the edges. I used to trace the Fellowship around Middle Earth before I went to sleep. I assume Larry is doing something equally entrancing for Velgarth, and I'd love to hand it on my walls. Maybe I'll pull out Middle Earth again and make that room into a whole explorers reading room of fantasy destinations :) Layla _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Aug 2001 16:15:34 From: "Layla Voll" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Reincarnation (was: RE: Karal/Di Trgarde) Message-ID: Tamlin writes >"Are spirits gender specific? >Of all the Heralds that we know have come back as >Companions - Savyil, Jaysen, Tantris to name but 3 - >they seem to come back as the gender they were, which >I think fits in to whole concept of them retaining >memories.
