I liked his personal thoughts and found them a little complex and they seemed to add a touch of intelligence to him that he often doesn't show. At this point he seems pretty honest so I will be glad to see how his character develops into a thief. I'm guessing its out of pure survival, after all living where he lives there aren't many occupation choices. I also am interested to know why he never claims he has any kinfolk at all. Granted they seem to be pretty scummy kinfolk but to never mention them *at all* suggests that maybe they did something pretty horrific to Skif...other than the miserliness and the squalor. That cousin of his seems like a real thug. I feel sorry for the serving girl. As for typos, I wasn't really looking for any so didn't catch any. I really did enjoy the snippet and appreciate that you took the time to send it to us Paul. I haven't had a chance to read the other snippet yet but am hoping to get to it tomorrow. I'm am really excited about Alberich's book. I have *always* liked Alberich and wanted to know more about him. (I'm still trying to find Werehunter so I can read about his choosing) He has always seemed to have plenty of hidden depths and his life as a Herald must have been one of struggle. After all, Heralds are human too and they must have had a hard time not being prejudiced about him. I wonder if the suncats will appear in any other books As for the Firecats, they are great!!! They'll often have a massive selection of used books and you can find a cheap copy in pretty good condition. I've delt with the various booksellers on a fairly regular basis and have only ever had trouble with one seller. (And that was more due to the fact they were four and a half hours ahead in timezones than any problem with the bookseller themselves.) Other than that, there's always Chapters, http://www.chapters.com .. Canadian prices and more reasonable shipping.. or if you're in the states, Amazon.com .. Amazon also sells used books. The last option is always ebay auction.. You can generally get some nifty stuff for a good price if you put your absolute top bid in at the start and never go back if you get outbid. (The item WILL be sold again by someone else and it may take 2 or 3 tries but you WILL get it for a good price as long as you're realistic.) >As for the Firecats, they are great!!! IIRC, it was stated that a firecat was the reincarnation of a Son of the Sun, basically the ruler of Karse. This would even more restrict the number of 'cats that were in circulation at any given point in time. (One of the cool things I recently realized about Skif's book is that we will also be seeing more about other people that I like, like Kris and Dirk, perhaps at the beginning their own careers as the Queen's Thieves, or whatever their nickname was). I agree with you about Alberich's early time at the Collegium being difficult. Heck, I don't even think he spoke Valdemarian, did he? And I've always been intrigued by the fact that he and Elcarth were year-mates. Must have been an odd year to be teaching at the Collegium, what with Elcarth coming in at the ancient age of about twenty, and Alberich coming in all the way from Karse. Aye, RTF works quite well for most simple styles and to make it easy for people to open in almost any browser. The other possible option is to make two copies, one in RTF and one in just plain text, and have those requesting the writing request which format they recieve it in. >I'll think about it - but I can't post it via the list while it converts any >MIME or UUE (or even HTML) into plain old ascii. If I may make a suggestion, surely there is a webpage somewhere you could use a corner of space to link the writings? or an FTP server? If you could post the snippets on a web page or on FTP that would allow most of us to self-serve the stories. Those who cannot get to the web or FTP for whatever reason could still request them from you, or from one of us who can, but it would make it that much simpler with most of us downloading for ourselves. Just a suggestion =) I REALLY enjoyed the bit of Skif's story, btw. Haven't read the other yet, saving that for a bit later, seeing how long I can torture myself =) >Many many people have said that, and each time Misty says she would rather >leave that as legend. > >Mind you, I keep pointing out the demand, and saying that there's probably >money in it ;-). > >At this time though, there are no plans for it. I loved the snippet from that book, since it gave me an insight to how Skif really thinks. I rather like the fact that it also shows that his speech has changed over the years, too. Someone mentioned that in the later books, Skif says he has no family, although there is definite family ties in the new book. Who knows what's going to happen later on in the story, though... Only Misty, of course! lol Also, I read the snippet from "Shadow of the Lion", and I must say that I am also eagerly awaiting the release of that one as well! I already like the style, and I'm a huge fan of books like that! I think those three (authors) have made a good team on this one... And I too would like to see Alberich from the point that "Stolen Silver" leaves us off at. Although I think it would be a bit like Karal coming to Valdemar, I think it would be so much worse. I mean, the two countries aren't friendly, and Alberich probably doesn't know anything but maybe a phrase or two of Valdemarian. Plus, he's coming in having to recover from an illness/injury. I would like to see him going through classes/training with Elcarth and others. Thanks again to Paul for whetting our appetites (okay, I'll be honest, making us drool!) with the snippets from the upcoming books! ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, that is her perogative as creator & author.... I for one would like to see a book about the founding of Valdemar not necessarily about the creation of the Companions and the adjustments thereof; but about what exactly the Eastern Empire did that was so horrible. But then, I'd like to know more about the Eastern Empire period. From what was presented in the Storm series, it seemed very Neo-Roman Empire-like & I'd like to know more about it and its assimilation procedures. Perhaps any book/series that carries Valdemar farther into the future might concentrate more on the Hardon campaign. I have to assume that the Empire was thrown into complete chaos after the events in the Storm series....but I'd like to be sure & see what happens next over there. Speculations anyone?
