I knew that born to run was there, but a quick look confirms it - werehunter is as well. *shakes head* The Baen free library is an excellent project, and a fantastic way to get a look at some books in electronic format that you might not otherwise have looked at. Yes, there will indeed. I'm just holding off some, since I don't want to overdo it. I'll send out chapter two of Shadow at some point in the future, and I might just send out the other half of Thief ch. 1. I'm also grovelling to Larry on your behalf for some kind of cut down examples of what he's working on. I might see if he'll write a short paragraph or two describing what he's got done recently, and what's in the pipeline. He keeps saying that he could do a few demonstrations of work in progress - let people see how it builds up, but he is awfully busy (He's got this deadline for the cover of Shadow for example), and I'm not sure if he will find the time. If he does, then you'll be the first to know. In it, its mentioned Selenay's "free breakfast and school" program - and while I think thats cool, are we going to hear more about this? I mean, obviously Talia didn't get access to that, and WHY NOT? It sounds like more than just companion's choice didn't get spread around the holderkin - it sounds like they ignored the crown's prerogative. Or is this a program solely for the major cities? just being curious. -Susan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 14:10:32 -0700 (PDT) From: "Li'nia Stormdancer" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Takes a "snippet" Message-ID: <20010809211032.93583.qmail-+AT+-web13802.mail.yahoo.com> Heyla List-Sibs! --- "Hill, Susan" wrote: > In it, its mentioned Selenay's "free breakfast and > school" program - and while I think thats cool, are we going to hear more about this? I tend to think that this was a program for more populated areas, like the big cities. Talia, for instance, was considered a misfit for reading, as most "proper" girls weren't taught how. It wasn't considered their place in life. (AotQ, pg.5) And since that was the prevelant view among the Holderkin, Selenay's program wouldn't have even stood a chance of starting there. Smaller communities all around may have been like that. Bigger cities, while a bit more open in their views, also tend to have more orphans and poor people, people who don't consider schooling as being more important than getting food. Hence, Selenay used the biggest attraction she could find: the promise of a free meal. ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? This was an innovation of Queen Selenay's, who had decided, based on her own observation, that a hungry child doesn't learn as well as one with food in his belly. So every child in Haven taking lessons who arrived on time was supplied with a bacon-roll and a mug of tea in winter, or a buttered roll and a piece of fruit in summer." It probably would have been a good idea if they'd expanded this program throughout the country-- but it looks like it's just Haven that benefits from this idea. In Haven, the largest city, it's possible to hit the biggest percentage of poor that need it, with the minimum of expense. Furthermore, in that small an area it's possible to ensure that the food is actually being handed out, and nobody is pocketing the treasury money. Cities tend to attract the underclasses, so quite a sizeable number of people would benefit from this deal. Moreover, it would be a hideously expensive thing to try to push out as far as the holderkin lands - and has been so well pointed out, it would be practically impossible to enforce on those people anyway. Selenay is trying to do the best by her people without unlimited resources. Paul ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2666 **********************************
