She started out in early- to mid-teens; kept emphasizing her youth, then after the Kingston Faire she seemed to "grow up" suddenly. After she got married, she seemed to be relegated to the "old/long married woman=no longer interested in adventure" status that Lackey puts married couples in. I would guess that he's a little older than that -- I don't think that he's that far away from being Chosen when we see him, and I think he gets Chosen at about the same age Talia does (13), since he's just a little older than her and a couple of years ahead of her during Arrows. Spoiler space for the snippet (which was great!) s p o i l e r s p a c e h e r e It's interesting reading this story knowing what we already know about from Arrows. I shivered when Skif casually reveals that the grand Lord that he's blithely stealing from and whose house he's sneaking around was Orthallen. I read somewhere that Mercedes Lackey said that this book explains why Orthallen hates Skif so much, although Skif has no idea. It does makes sense that there would be some reason why Orthallen really singles Skif out, beyond just that he disapproves of a former thief being a Herald. And Alberich says to Talia in "Arrow's Fall" that Orthallen is one of the two or three truly evil people he has met, so I wonder whether that also comes partly from his experience with him in this book. To keep this on-topic -- has anyone read "Rediscovery," which was the Darkover novel Bradley co-wrote with Mercedes Lackey? I'd be tempted to start with that one, if other people enjoyed it. And didn't she also write some Darkover short stories?
