As to an order to read them in, before MZB died, if you wrote to her magazine she'd send a list of her books sorted by internal chronological order (my term for sorting books according to what's happening within. ex. Magic's Pawn comes before Magic's Promise.), and a list sorted by when she wrote them, which is the order that she recommended that people read them in. If I can find my list, I'll post it on my webpage and let you know, if someone else doesn't beat me to it first. ^^ ~Aurora --- Layla Voll wrote: > I recently came into a fairly large collection of > Marion Zimmer's Bradley's > Darkover novels (although not nearly all of them!), > and I wondered if anyone > knew of a website or something, or had > recommendations of their own, that > might give me a clue what order to read them in: > whether there was some kind > of list on line of people's favorite ones, or > whether there were strong > opinions on whether to read them chronologically > within the story or > chronologically as written. > > To keep this on-topic -- has anyone read > "Rediscovery," which was the > Darkover novel Bradley co-wrote with Mercedes > Lackey? I read "The Forbidden Tower" first which also seemed a good starting point, but then I jumped to "The Bloody Sun" which really confused me. It seemed to be further in the future in places, but the towers seemed to have lost so much knowledge in just a generation. I recommend picking a starting point in one of the "ages" as Susan has outlined and then follow that age chronologically before skipping to another age. Each Age really is completely different, but they build on each other. -----Original Message----- > I recently came into a fairly large collection of Marion > Zimmer's Bradley's Darkover novels (although not nearly > all of them!), and I wondered if anyone knew of a website > or something, or had recommendations of their own, that > might give me a clue what order to read them in: whether > there was some kind of list on line of people's favorite > ones, or whether there were strong opinions on whether to > read them chronologically within the story or chronologically > as written. Another author (Patricia Kennealy-Morrison) started at that point (people from Earth finding a lost group again) because it introduced the world to the new people as it introduced it to us, and therefore can explain specifics of that world without making the readers feel like they are getting a bunch of necessary information that didn't really go with the plot. (it was phrased much better when i read it before ) It seems like good logic to me, and that was the first book I happened to get my hands on, so I started there and that worked well. I'm normally in favor of reading things chronologically, but maybe I need to rethink that. (It took me a while to get into Misty's Gryphon books, and then when I got to Herald Mage and Arrows I was horrified that I had let them sit on my shelf for the time it took me to get all the gryphon books!) Enjoy the books! Alissa ===== "Alegria... I never really liked the rest of them; I don't really like fantasy-style gypsies, so I didn't enjoy them as much. Also, I found the theme of Church/establishment vs. Rebels/everyone else a little too heavy in the later books, such as the... second one?? (I don't own it, so I can't remember which one is about girl gypsy and lost prince). But then, I prefer character driven plots, like the Last Herald Mage trilogy or By the Sword. ~*~cheers, Kat/Perchta~~ ~*~ momma to Rebecca, born July/00 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 05:30:55 EDT From: LunaDrkwd-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Marion Zimmer Bradley Message-ID: <138.e28dd8.28c0b34f-+AT+-aol.com> --part1_138.e28dd8.28c0b34f_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have Rediscovery...I really enjoyed it, it is a good collaberation.
