SPOILER Message-ID: Misty and I spent a while running around London last year; I think it left a good impression. I have to 'fess up and say I never did get a chance to read serpent though. Misty and I had some discussions about it, but I never actually read the manuscript. I recall that I was busy with personal projects at the time that it came out. Historical novels huh? Well, I'm not sure the market is quite as strong, which is one argument to put to your dad. On the other hand, you could buy him a copy of "Shadow of the lion" which is almost a historical novel; but not out 'til next year. In the meantime, you Might want to consider "1632" by Eric Flint, one of the co-authors of Shadow. It's a novel about a small town in america that ends up in the middle of teutonic germany in the year 1632... Eric is a real history buff; and the novel is great fun on the "what if" stakes. The whole premise is what if they took the Bill of Rights seriously and based their lives on it. It makes me wonder "What if US citizens took the Bill of Rights seriously, and based thier lives on it." The last two years my daughter's homeschool Social Studies has been based on the Bill of rights, and the Study of the Federal violations of it. ===== What's the difference between genius and stupidity? I wonder how many violations there actually are? One of the unusual things about our (US) governmental system as that any law (or in this case, Constitutional Amendmen) is subject to the interpretation of our court system. Over the 200+ years our nation has been in existence, the bill or rights has been brought up often before the Supreme Court of the US. In all those cases, the decision that was handed down was used as precedent for later decisions so that the amendment has been further interpreted. What this means, though, is that in some cases, what the amendment originally stood for has been taken and interpreted into something different. For example, Free Speech, Press, and Assembly (First Amendment Rights). This amendment was _originally_ targeted towards giving the citizens of the US the right to freely speak out against the government in speech, printed material, and protestation assemblies. Nothing was intended in this amendment towards artistic free expression (pornographic publishers cry "free speech" all the time). However, interpretation of the first amendment in US Supreme Court decisions has ended up with a broader view of free speech than was originally intended. Can you tell I took a course in US Supreme Court law in college? flaming lawyer sheep to all...
