There are supposed to be four. I've been waiting for the final two forever; or rather, as long as everyone else has which has seemed like forever. The Two that are out: Elvenbane Elvenblood The two yet to be released: Elvenbred (sp?) Elvenborn I'm not entirely sure if those last two are in order, but I hope tntgray is correct in saying that Misty is finished with her part of the 3rd book and hopefully Norton is too and maybe it will be out at the end of the year. It's sure been a while; I may have to go re-read the first two just to remember what was happening in the series. That's Evan Trader's murder trial. The Heralds aren't brought in because the father is being accused of abuse: the older daughter is found dead and Evan Trader is accused of the murder. The revelation of abuse comes about because Evan says that the girl came to him, begging him to take her away with him (she won't say why), but he finds her dead in his wagon. Talia suspects abuse, and Truth Spells first the younger daughter and then the stepfather to get the confession of abuse and murder. (Evan shows up later in Arrows Fall, by the way, as the trader who gets Talia's note to Rolan after she's captured.) >My take on the whole situation >is that Hearlds can't really use the Truth Spell >lightly; they have to have either some other evidence >besides it, or it has to be a pretty serious >accusation. In the end it came down to "He said this" >and "She said that" so when Talia was using the Truth >Spell, it enabled her to make the correct decision >with no doubts as to whether she did the right thing >or not. The town is actually pretty undivided on its opinion that Evan should be lynched: he throws himself on the mercy of the Heralds, and the Truth Spell is first used on him so that he can prove his innocence. Which works -- when Evan says he didn't kill her and the blue glow proves he's telling the truth, the villagers are immediately convinced. Talia asks to have the younger sister brought out, and tells her "I don't want to force you to speak, but I will if I have to." Once the daughter makes the accusation of abuse, Talia transfers the Truth Spell to the stepfather without asking him or telling him what she's going to do, and that's when he confesses. I think you're right in saying that the Truth Spell can be used only in very, very serious cases where there is also additional supporting evidence to point the investigation in that direction: sort of like getting a warrant before searching a house. Talia does not, for instance, Truth Spell all the villagers giving testimony on whether Evan had been seen with the older girl, and she has good reason to suspect she needs the testimony from the younger daughter. On the other hand, I did find it a little disturbing that Talia could compel testimony from not only the accused man, but also from his other *victim*, the younger daughter, who is forced by the Truth Spell to talk, in front of the entire village, about the truly horrific experience of being repeatedly beaten and raped by her stepfather. Each of the first 2 completed their stories in the end, the second just happened to move on into another story. And with luck, the other 2 will do the same. Are they stand-alone books in a connected series, or do they end in
cliffhangers? I have Elvenbane and Elvenblood and would like to read them,
but prefer not to read books that leave me hanging at the end with Our
Heroes dangling over the pit of molten lava.
