The designers couldn't just *forget* about them. Design in our world has taken only humans into account, but the designers and engineers in Valdemar, and all Velgarth, for that matter, will be taking their four-footed friend's needs into account as well. Perhaps Companions *could* change their shape, with divine aid, but what about the gryphons and all the rest of the intelligent, large, four-footed races? Society can't just forget about them. Trains and cars will be designed with them in mind, as will any modifications to the current infrastructure. So I don't believe that Companions will ever become completely superfluous -- the inventions that are created will be built *around* them, and although their place in society may change, they will not become superfluous. Technology can't replace all that they do. For example, trains in Valdemar may all come equipped with a 'Companion car', and the Heralds may have use of a special, private track so that they can zoom where ever they're needed. A new bylaw may say that all new public buildings being built must be accessible for the non-human races. Elevators come in a human-size and an extra large. Royal cars might all come equipped with a trailer -- and I bet that the Valdemarians would invent a safer and more efficient type of trailer than the ones we've got ... and their roads might be wider to accommodate larger vehicles. There might be another bylaw saying that city sidewalks have to be wide enough for two Companions. Although their role as transportation has disappeared, Companions are still a symbol of public office, and they still play a role in the way that Valdemar is run. Take care! Some of you may remember me as ShadowDreamer, and before that, MorningStar. I was resubscribed briefly somewhat recently but got listdumped again so I am trying from a different address. Does someone *really really* hate me, or is it just that the computers don't like me that I can't stay on the list? Anyhow, I'm back. For those of you who don't remember me (or have never heard of me before in your life) and since it's been a while, here's an intro of me: I am a 24 (almost 25) year old college student at Metropolitan State College of Denver. I've been reading Mercedes Lackey books for years and years, sometime along the lines of 10 years I would think by now. I was introduced by a stranger in a bookstore who discussed books with me, handed me a copy of Magic's Pawn, and explained that if I did not have a problem with a homosexual protagonist this was a TERRIFIC book and I should try it out. As usual I was scrambling for something new to read, so I took her up on it, and have been hooked ever since. I have done my share for the *cause* by addicting my husband (well, ok, I wasn't married to him then...but I am now, several friends, and many strangers while I worked in a bookstore and then in a library. Otherwise, I like music, many many other books (Tamora Pierce, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, and many others) and small fuzzy animals. As far as this list goes, I've been around off and on for entirely too long, I helped found the Order of Unsung Heroes (which I guess is still around, eh?) and I've had a lot of fun. I hope I can stick around this time, I'm usually pretty busy and barely notice when I get listdumped since all that happens is I stop getting a fraction of the e-mail I usually get. I miss it after a few days but then am still too busy to figure out if I actually was dumped or if noone's just talking for a while thereafter. Hmm... are there still Oblagatory Misty parts to these e-mails? Well... hmph. Not much new to mention, other than that I've recently re-read the Bedlam Bards series and I also read the book about Kayla. There seem to be a few discrepancies between the two, did anyone else notice that? All right, well I'm out for now... I don't have my Winds trilogy here at college with me so I can't be double triple sure like I'd like to be. :( I'll see if I can't find a way to get it and check for you, but i'm definitely 98% sure they are. :) -Veronica- On Wed, 19 Sep 2001, Gina Pond wrote: > Hi folks... > > so, I come out of lurking to ask a question...I've recently finished > reading the mage winds trilogy and the storm trilogy, and the > question I have is: are Darkwind and Elspeth lifebonded or just in > love? it's never mentioned specifically (or if it was i don't > remember) in the mage winds books, but there's a scene with > Firesong where he complains about all these people that have > lifebonds and mentions them (darkwind and elspeth that is)... > > gina > > > > -- > )O( )O( )O( > Join Us in Circle to Worship The Old Ones > Visit: http://churchofthesacredspiral.org > Bright Blessings > The Church of the Sacred Spiral > (Legal Handfasting Available) > )O( )O( )O( > ---------------------------------- > Gina A.
