I noticed in Arrow's Fall, when Talia has her first Council meeting as full Queen's Own, that there are only two Heralds, Dean Elcarth and Kyril (the Seneschal's Herald), while in the first Winds book the Council meeting includes three Heralds: Kyril (SH), Teren (Dean), and Griffon as the Lord Marshal's Herald. In some ways, they need a Lord Marshal's Herald less in Winds than in Arrows, since by Winds they have a outpouring of military experience (Kerowyn, of course, and Daren, "the best Lord Martial Faram was ever likely to have"). On the other hand, in Winds they are both on a war footing and a bit more organized about military matters than they are in Arrows. Well... I haven't actually bought the book yet, but I've found that if you wander all over a big book store and occasionally look interested in other books, you can actually read quite a bit of a certain book... Namely "Take A Thief" this time... lol I have to admit that I will probably end up buying the book, though, instead of paying another visit to that book store... They may start to suspect something soon... lol Sigh... my big choice was between that book and a Harry Potter (I know, I know, sacrilege...) and I NEVER pass up a good deal on a hard-cover book (which I had with the HP title, so... that one won!) I guess I'll have to wait 'til my next paycheck to buy "Take a Thief"... But from what I've read, I do rather like it a lot! I ordered it though the Science Fiction Book Club...now just waiting, waiting, checking the mail three times a day waiting for it to get here! :) I'm dying to read it; seems like it will give us almost more of a "daily life" story, which I dearly love. Is that the case (assuming you can answer without spoilers...not that I mind, but I know other people do). Hehe well... I have a bit to say about the book at a later date that *will* be spoilers, at least minor ones, but I will leave those until I have read it a second time as is my habit with my favorite authors. By the time I get the book in my hands I am so impatient to read it I rush through it and generally miss stuff. I bought my copy at Waldenbooks which had a nice stack of them available here in Colorado... fwiw to anyone. There is a special open 24 hours Post Office in the Portland Area. International orders will go out next. Keep an eye on your mailboxes, the books went out Priority Mail, and should be in your hands soon. The new Laurell K. Hamilton book Narcissus in Chains also arrived in the same box. So we have copies if there are any Anita Blake fans out there. This is post events in Obsidian Butterfly, and most of the book finds Anita sorting out her overly complicated love life. Mercedes Lackey on conventions. More on conventions: Although Larry and I had been thinking about going back to conventions again, in the light of recent events, we have decided not to. Traveling has become that much more difficult; when you add the 3 to 4 hour process of going through security checks to the rest of it, that means we would essentially lose two entire days of work just in the traveling process---a total of five lost days of work for the entire convention. It just isn't worth trying to struggle to make up those five lost days given the heavy work schedule we have. Mercedes Lackey Jody Lee cover art: People have been asking about the status of Jody Lee's covers. So far there, there have not been enough people ordering any one print to justify re-printing anything. This is bad news for the Vanyel fans want re-prints the Last Herald Mage covers. So far there are a total of 6 of each cover pre-ordered. This is a far cry from the 20-30 that are need to make the project economical. There also has not been enough interest in any of the un-published covers to go ahead and invest in a print run. Owlflight, the first new print in ages has not even been selling. Any suggestions on how to boost sales to generate the income to invest in new art? Firebird News: The web site is slowly but surely getting re-assembled. Most of the links now work, and the process of adding new items has started. Thanks again for the bug alerts and understanding. The web site has been undergoing lots of major changes, we've had to change ISP hosts--or beloved local ISP was purchased by a out of state company and there was no local support. We lost web site hosting, and the e-mail was intermittent for months. As part of the change Firebird switched over to a Java Script based shopping cart system. This doesn't have quite the bells and whistles that the database cart did, but is lots easier to use. This item isn't news, just a plea for some assistance, and is not directed at the folks on the Mercedes Lackey Newsletter. Please cross post this. Firebird has get frequent requests both for Mercedes Lackey's e-mail address or physical location. We don't give these out under any circumstances. This is to protect Misty from the unwanted, intrusive or just downright dangerous. Misty also does not read Fan Fiction of any sort. This means Valdemar, Bardic Voices, Bedlam Bards, or any of Misty's worlds. She also does not read fan fiction based on other author's worlds. In fact any fiction that is sent to her--and manages to get past her screeners, is returned unread, or destroyed. There is a longer explanation in the Ask Misty feature of the Firebird web site: firebirdarts.com but the basic problem is litigation from a fan claiming that Misty has ripped off an idea. Her only defense is to be able to swear in court that she has never seen any fan fiction. This happened to writer Marion Zimmer Bradley, who was also represented by agent Russ Galen, and after sorting out the mess, Russ gave all his writers strict instructions NOT to read any fan fiction. Russell Galen is a good agent, and his job is to maximize his writers (and his own) income. Lawsuits, are costly, time intensive and a drain. Any time Misty is in court defending herself from deluded fans, she's not spending in front of her computer spinning the next tale for you to read. Now most people wouldn't dream of calling a plumber and asking them to take the time to fix their sink for free. Same deal for a doctor, lawyer, or any other skilled professional. Why fans believe that a professional writer and editor---who works at her craft to support her family---can be treated any differently is a mystery. No, Misty is not going to read any fan fiction. Misty is not going to read any unsolicited fiction at all. Don't ask for her e-mail address, you won't get it. Don't send any fiction to her P.O. Box, it will be returned or thrown away. Give Misty the same respect that you would accord any other hardworking professional. Again, regular newsletter readers, this is not directed at you. You guys know all this stuff, and are respectful of Misty's time and privacy, but is for the other guys out there who haven't taken the time to think things through.
