Mindspeech is mentioned as one of his gifts, and someone remarks on Fetching *not* being a gift. He seems to have a slight touch of ForeSight, too. I think it's been mentioned that ForeSight visions only show one of many possible futures, not an exact premonition. Talia & Skif could just as easily have worn hoods. I seem to remember other anecdotes of that sort - sleight of hand tricks, Skif and Talia using the glass against the wall trick to listen to Hulda, etc. I did find two typos, one on the first or second page even. :) >I bought my copy at Waldenbooks which had a nice stack of them available >here in Colorado... fwiw to anyone. >Shads My local Walden had them too - I almost didn't see them, they were stuck on a side endcap near the SF/Fantasy section, instead of being in the SF/F hardback section. They didn't have many out, though, only two copies, although the little shelf they propped them on wouldn't have held more than that. I broke down and bought it already, although it may end up on the best seller list in a few weeks, which would mean another 15% off. That's how I got Burning Brightly fairly cheap. This time I just used some of the Preferred Reader gift certs I earn with their card. Lovely way to get cheaper books. :) Christi ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 18:31:14 +0100 From: Alex Ramage To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Take a thief - availability in the UK Message-ID: Have been waiting for this book in the UK. Is that the case (assuming you can answer without spoilers...not that I mind, but I know other people do)." I would be inclined to say yes, for the most part... without giving any spoilers =) A spoilerized answer is at the bottom. Noooow for those who like spoilers.... Midnight Rider asks, with a spoiler.... S P O I L E R "Now I have "?". Is Skif's gift Foresight? And if it is I take it is not an excact science. I don't remember Talia and Skif wearing hoods while making their climb to do the spying. I thought it was ash or charcoal." I see that as more of perhaps some of the general linked foresight of the Companions. Cymry states that she's known he was hers for a while beforehand, I interpreted that dream as Skif's nightwalk after being Chosen, Cymry's being the presence he is aware of. Skif's gift seems to be Mindspeech but it never really says if he has any others. I feel that the nightwalk and the hiding in a closet dream are both that type of limited foresight, perhaps Cymry has foresight and the dreams come from her? Anyhow, that's my take on it. regarding daily life... yes, I'd say this is a good picture of *Skif's* daily life, perhaps the life of many children living in the conditions he lives in. However, I would hardly call it a "normal" daily life... but certainly an interesting view of life in the society he starts out in, at any rate. You get a view of the people around him as well as himself. currently working on my second readthrough =) Shads ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 17:37:34 -0400 From: "FoxFire Arts" To: Subject: Re: Take a Thief NOT SPOILER Message-ID: <008901c15366$1b365640$7360fa18-+AT+-athen1.ga.home.com> > I know it was mentioned that he was an ex-thief - there was a scene where > there was a disturbance and "someone" snitched everyone's purse/beltpouch > etc and left them hanging in a tree. This makes Take a Thief (from the chapter that I read)interesting or perhaps from an alternate timeline in Velgarth? People who have bad childhoods will make up stories to avoid thinking about it.
