Since it addresses a couple of issues that people have been asking after, I thought it apposite enough to post in full. Note that we still don't have a date on the map poster, but it's going to be there, so hang in! :) Paul ********* Mercedes Lackey Newsletter 02Jan02 New Year Message from Mercedes Lackey This has been a wretched, grim year. I'm not sorry to see it over. We've been urged by our leaders to 'get back to normal,' that the best thing we can do is to essentially live our lives as if September 11th never happened. I say that's not good enough. I don't think 'normal' is something we should be striving for. We can do better than that. And we should. I don't think there's any doubt that we can. We've proved it, in all of the things that have been done in the wake of September 11th. Normal? Ridiculous. We can be braver than 'normal,' more generous than 'normal,' more compassionate than 'normal,' more responsible than 'normal.' And we can make these new standards what is considered 'normal,' strive to do better than that. We can. And we must. Because 'normal' is mediocre, and we are better than that. May this New Year set those new standards for all of us. Misty Lackey Firebird News: Jody Lee Vanyel Print The prints should be along sometime this month. Jody was not happy with the colors in the first couple of proofs that came back from the lab, and is waiting till the reproductions are just right. So hang in there all you folks that ordered the print for the holidays, progress is being made. While you are waiting take a moment to check out Jody's brand new website at: http://jodylee.net Lord of the Rings People who have been getting the newsletter for a while may remember Misty talking about the amazing special effects she saw while touring the WETA production studio of Lord of the Rings as part of her trip to New Zealand. Misty was very impressed at the time, but couldn't say much. If you haven't seen the movie yet, go. This is the most amazing fantasy movie ever brought to the big screen. Peter Jackson, his production crew, the script writers and the actors have done a wonderful job bringing the Lord of the Rings to life. They would certainly have my vote to do a film version of Valdemar. ( Ok, we can all dream can't we?) Firebird will be carrying some Lord of the Rings merchandise: The soundtrack is already up on the site, and the books ($6.99 per book) will follow shortly. We will also be carrying several different un-abridged audio version of the "Lord of the Rings", and "The Hobbit" and some boxed sets. Ask Misty: The Ask Misty feature has been up and running for a couple of years now, and there is a huge amount of information. Most of the questions that have been coming in have already been answered--some of them several times over. Please take the time to read through what is already there. In order to conserve Misty's time and resources, only original questions are being forwarded. And no, firebird-+AT+-firebirdarts.com is not Misty's secret identity. This mail is answered by Teri Lee of Firebird Arts & Music. Please remember: No story ideas or fan fiction. The complete answer for this is posted in the Ask Misty section. Valdemar Map Larry Dixon's original map is wonderful, and current plans are to do a large 2' x 3' poster size print. How this is going to be accomplished is still uncertain, as is the final price. The Gates of Sleep "The Gates of Sleep" manuscript has been turned in and should be out in hardback sometime in 2002. A sample chapter will be posted soon, most likely be the weekend. "The Gates of Sleep" is the third book with elemental mages, Fire Rose, and Serpent's Shadow are the other books in this delightful mix of elemental magic and fairy tales with a Victorian twist. Feather Jewelry: Firebird has added a new color: Sun Kindler to the existing colors offered: Crafted with yellow, orange and red feathers, cords and beads, these are very eye catching. Best wishes for the year 2002 from all the folks at Firebird. Of course, if there is a sequel involving both Eric & Tannim then I would think differently, but at the moment I feel that a good set of characters were severely underused in this novel! Another good reason to have the list moved *grin*. Some people don't know that they're subscribed, or what a subscription might entail. I think I got a similar response about a month ago. As for seeing more of Joe, I would assume we will, as Misty has rarely made a major character for one book. Query: Is Diana in the Serarated world? If so, might we see her in a future book or two? With two Bards, and 3-4 Guardians in one place, I would think that Diana would know about them, espially as she is also a guardian in NY. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well more acuratlly Tannim is in HER world :). In SWaL Tannim makes ref to meeting a Guardian at a DAnce - That's Diana. For a better account read Jinx High - he pops up at the dance. I don't know if anyone has talked about this in the past, but I found it interesting, so I figured I'd get everyone else's input. [ Please bear with my text references. I've never done this before. ] I was rereading TLHM Trilogy for, like, the third time (it's my favorite). On pg 215 of Magic's Pawn, it is noted by Savil that the energy backlash from 'Lendel's Gate had blasted open all of Van's Gifts, including Bardic Gift. I think it said something about the supreme irony of it all or some such. Why, then, didn't he use this Gift at all when he was disguised in Highjorune? He could have gone in, put his listeners in a mood to talk about things like the slaughter at the palace, gotten the info he needed and left. Just a thought. Also with Gifts.... Savil noted that every channel in Van's mind had been blasted open - "with the sole exception of Healing." How, then, does Van repeatedly have a "small amount of Healing ability"? ex MPrice - pg 49 +100 MPromise - pg 303. Like I said, just a thought. I've found another interesting contradiction as to Guardians. Immediately after Jays' death, Vanyel was forced to take his place as Guardian b/c there were no other Herald-Mages left to do it. " - The Web - You're the Northern Guardian - " "Exactly. You'll have to take my place." [ MPromise, pg 309] In MPrice, Van, Savil, Lissandra and Kilchas gather to alter the Web so that it wouldn't require four Herald-Mage Guardians, and instead would be manned by all Heralds, regardless of their Gifts. "Lissandra was the most senior of the Guardians, despite being younger than Vanyel... She had assumed the Northern quadrant along with her Whites." [ MPrice, pg 61] "Savil directly across from Van in the West..." [ pg 60 ] On page 59 it also says that when Van had taken over for Jaysen, he had discovered that he could work with Jays' primary focus of tiger-eye as well as his own. That rules out that they decided to switch Van and Lissandra for reasons of who was more powerful and which Border required more attention. eager to hear everyone's opinion snapper __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
