(I'm at work, none of the books handy, anybody have the specific book? Magic's Pawn I think.) So, using the Bardic power would have made them willing to talk, until Van stopped... and you can not talk to people while putting on a concert. As to Van's healing, All his gifts were "Opened to their fullest" with two exceptions. The aforementioned healing, and "Enough firestarting to insure he'd never need a firestarter." (From memory, the quote might be off a bit. Sorry.) All of his gifts were opened, but those two were only opened a bit, rather than opened wide. As to the guardian thing... 5 will get you 10, it's an oops thing. Misty is one of the best writers I have read in the last 30 years, but nobody can write as much as she does without an ocasional oops. Back to work... ===== Kitchen, James A. My thought would be that Van/Valdir was trying to be inconspicuous, so using Bardic Gift in the tavern probably wouldn't have been a good idea. Someone would have noticed that Valdir seemed too talented to be working in a dump of a tavern. Why would someone with Bardic Gift be working in a low-end tavern? Talk would have gotten around, and may have gotten back to the Mavelans. Now, as to why he didn't use it with the maid that gave him the background information, who knows. Maybe the heartstone ring would have prevented the Gift from affecting her? >Also with Gifts.... How, then, does Van >repeatedly have a "small amount of >Healing ability"? ex MPrice - pg 49 +100 MPromise - >pg 303. Like I said, just a thought. "Blasted open" tends to imply (to me anyway) "wide open" - i.e. a large amount of those Gifts. Possibly the Healing Gift was only "opened" a small amount, or maybe Van had a small amount of Healing before this occurred? Or possibly Healing is different enough from the other Gifts that while the other ones were "wide open" Healing was just slightly open. [ MPrice, pg 61] > "Savil directly across from Van in the West..." [ pg >60 ] You've got me on this one. Possibly an error on ML's part - it happens. :) As far as Lissandra, maybe she took over North from Van when she got her Whites, giving Van more energy for his other duties, and then Van took the East(?) quadrant over when someone else retired? Of course, that doesn't explain the seniority part. Convoluted, I know, but hey. I do what I can.
