Yes, in fact, I just got done borrowing the Alberich-Choosing story in HorseFantasic from Anne Cross. It's *very* short. But extremely interesting, considering that Alberich has always been fascinating to me. I suppose he has Foresight? I don't think that was ever mentioned in the books.... I think Van's fourth child was a girl. I have *no* idea where I got this. Has anyone else thought about a (relatively, I think) recent trend among fantasy writers to make each book *really* long -- like five hundred pages for the Mage Winds books (each!) as opposed to twofifty for the Van books? Or robert jordan's books, or mickey zucker reichert [what a mouthful :)]? Why has this happened? Yup. In "Horse Fantastic" which is a short story collection, there is the story of Alberich's choosing. Also in the Sword and Sorceress series of short story collections by Bradley there's several others about Tarma And Kethry. Good stuff. Not worth buying each of these books for (there's 5 plus "Horse Fantastic" each with one story by Lackey, at $5-$6 a pop). My opinion of course. But they are well worth trying to find used or better yet in the library. I've read all but the first Tarma and Kethry story (in S&S III). Still trying to find that one. *NOTE: Minor spoilers for Storm warning* As far as where the storyline is going, I think that the future of Storm Warning will deal with the "Blues" coming into their own. The society will alter drastically as these folks introduce mechanical and generally scientific devices/information into the society. I don't know how far Misty will take this. I prefer the pre-industrial Valdemar. But it will be interesting to see what happens! Iris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 May 1995 16:22:20 BST From: "Barbara G. Jacob-McDowell" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Characters in trouble Message-ID: To add to this thread... I have a family member who is a modern-day hermit (with the help of his parents, because he has such a hard time controlling his temper and they don't believe in counselling. He once summed it up by telling me, "If I limit the contacts I have, there's less conflict. No contact, no conflict." That's also true of characters in novels. If ML had only written in the first Arrows book about a young girl learning how to be a Herald, it would still have been an interesting book to me, but without the complications of Talia's being Queen's Own, having such an unusual Gift, and the various intrigues swirling around the Court, it would have been a very different book. It also would have been a different book if Talia's personality had been different; part of the Blues' torment succeeded *because* she was used to being so reticent, coming from a repressive background with the Holderkin. Personality, incidents, and the experiential background (as one of my English professors called it) each of us has from our past, all influence what will happen. One of the basic plots which ML does so well is the one involving a young person unsure of his/her place, of how (s)he fits in, of the continuing quest to learn that and to grow. As a writer myself, I know that it's not really hard to write a death scene, even a lyrical one like Stefan vanishing into Sorrows at the end of the Magic trilogy. What is a lot harder is to write about everyday things, descriptive passages, funny things--like Talia's journey outward from the Holderkin to Haven, the transitions from such a quiet, rural place to the congestion and din of the royal capital; the practical details of Talia's packing for her first circuit; the humor of her and Skif's futile efforts to change their friendship to romance. All of these are expertly done, so expertly that they seem easy and can almost be skimmed over quickly. Yet they help set the tone for what follows. Someone said that the hardest thing to write is comedy. Next hardest is tragedy--it's so easy to overwrite and tip it over the edge into something funny. Sometime go read the chapter in Charles Dickens' *The Old Curiosity Shop* where LIttle Nell dies. At the time, it was highly praised for its sensibility, and people (including Dickens himself when he wrote it, using it as a catharsis for his grief over the early death of his sister-in-law) cried quarts over it. Now it is hard to read it without cracking up, because it seems so extremely overdone by our standards. Pathos changed into bathos. A friend complained to me that he had stopped reading new books by Marion Zimmer Bradley and ML because "They're always about some kid who doesn't know how to grow up." While I would like, now and again, to see ML do a book centering around an older character, one of the things I enjoy in her work is the idea that people don't all mature at the same rate, in all areas, at the same time. In the *Winds* trilogy, Elspeth is a good bit older and more experienced that Talia, yet she too has to go on a quest to find the way to using her abilities, and in some areas, she is not as knowledgable as her friend. How could she be? They are not the same person. In the same way, Vanyel is this adolescent kid with sophisticated airs...but very vulnerable underneath. As I get older, I hear other people say, "Oh, I hated being a teenager! I felt so self-concious and out of it!" Gee, so did I, and I was convinced that I was the only one in my school who did...and now I believe that most of us feel that way, and not only at that stage of life. ML is really good at pointing out to us that learning and adjusting to what we learn is a continuing process. Sorry to run on so long! Put it down to the energy at the beginning of the week (and a deep desire to stall off from work for a couple of minutes)! 8^) --Barra ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 May 1995 16:22:38 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey Subject: This is _DEFINITELY_ a test. Why has this happened? > I can think of several possible contributing factors: (1) Word processors - you can shuffle bits of text about, make alterations, expand bits - without having to retype the lot. So, for the same quantity of typing, you can end up with a bigger book. (2) Reader preference, and rising book prices. 15+ years ago (eek!) When I was at university, and started collecting paperbacks, book prices were around 30p, and I'd buy anything that looked even vaguely interesting. Now they're around 5.99 or more, I'm running out of places to stack the piles of books I don't have room for :-) and I'm a lot less likely to buy a book unless it looks really interesting; Books have moved from "cheap" to "noticeable"; trade paperbacks (I *HATE* trade papebacks!) are even worse. If you observe that cover prices aren't directly proportional to book length, then there's probably some perception that longer books are "better value" - a lower cost-per-page - which probably helps to boost sales, and in turn encourages people to write longer books. I guess the real question is whether the longer books _benefit_ from being longer - have peoples tastes changed so that we like our stories spun out longer, does the technology let the authors tell longer and more intricate stories than they could otherwise have managed, or is it just poor editing or size for the sake of size? -- _|_ / | Jerry Cullingford jc-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk (Work) \_|_ jc-+AT+-selune.demon.co.uk (Home) \__/ Hemel Hempstead, UK jerry-+AT+-shell.portal.com (alternate) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 May 1995 10:57:31 -0600 (MDT) From: RUNDLE-+AT+-wilma.bcasd.az.honeywell.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: RE: Lifebonds etc Message-ID: <950502105731.22604d59-+AT+-wilma.bcasd.az.honeywell.com> > LIfebonds. Reread the part where Eldan and Kero get back together for the first time, and they discuss their dreams. Clearly Eldan had the same dreams, and they affected him as much as they did Kero. The lifebond has been described as coming into being at the first moment two people lay eyes on each other. Technically then you don't have to "meet" the person, but you do have to see them. We don't know if the deities of Velgarth cause lifebonded-to-be couples to come together. And I also wouldn't mind seeing what happens if some person decides he is lifebonded to someone, and isn't. Particularly if the second person is a herald (in other words, would part of being a herald be having to fend off hero-worshippers, who are just positive that all they have to do is meet the herald, and the herald will fall in love with them?) Did that make sense? Oh well. I work in publishing (I am a children's book editor) so I can tell you a bit about why books are certain prices or lenghts. Actually, the paper has a lot to do with how long a book is. Paper comes in bunches of 16 pages so books have to comform to this, for example, a book can be 196 pages or 212 pages or any other multiple of 16. This is including all the title pages and other stuff found in the front and back of a book Now the price of paper is going up, so that means that the publisher either has to raise their prices to make up for this (and this will be happening starting in the fall, be warned) or they have to compress the book into less pages by making the margins smaller. I think if you look at the Magic books as compared to the White Gryphon you will see that they have smaller margins and more words per page to make up for those smaller page counts Publishers like series books because they know that there is a given audience who will read book 2 as opposed to picking up a single book by an author. Series require a lot of character building and plot developement to support three books and as a result tend to be longer than single titles. You also have to look at how many words are in a line and how close together the lines are. People also feel that if they are going to pay $5.99 for a paperback then they should get a lot of book for their money. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 May 1995 00:21:46 -0400 From: URAMESS-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: WG - possible spoiler/dis... The move seems to have gone relatively smoothly (apart from the million or so bounce messages I now need to deal with :)). So, this is the drill from now on: admin requests: subscribe, unsubscribe, etc. mail to: listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk subject: (blank) message: subscribe mercedes-lackey your name unsubscribe mercedes-lackey (etc) messages to the list: mail to mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk You're all subscribed to the list with the options that you had before the move. Any list-admin-related problems should go to lackey-owner-+AT+-herald.co.uk. I know that a couple of people who unsubscribed within the last 24 hours or so will now be resubscribed; I'll be fixing that today, bear with me. Archives etc: the new archives will be available in the usual way, and also via FTP and WWW (when I finish setting it up). The old archives from UEL will also be available from here (and probably still from UEL). The FAQ will be available by mail in the same manner as the archives (the old version is there at the moment, to be replaced fairly shortly by the new one). Um. Anything else? Spread the word about the move, if you would (not in the sense of posting to rec.arts.sf.written or new-lists -- I'll do that), but in a general sense. If someone (Tabbifli?) could post to alt.books.m-lackey for me, I'd be grateful. Any (non-list-admin) questions, send me mail (mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk) -- particularly if you see any strange things happening with mail. Cheers Mel. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 May 1995 12:23:12 EET DST From: "Tarja Rainio" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: re: McKinley, Dean, and Goddesses Message-ID: <3EAE66E7E14-+AT+-katk.helsinki.fi> On Tue, 2 May 1995 Lili asked: >Does anyone know of any books she has written besides _Hero & Crown_, >_Blue Sword_, _Door In the Hedge_, _Outlaws of Sherwood_, and >_Deerskin_? >I'm crazy about her writing and yet can never seem to find anything else >by her. I don't have any specifics at hand (I'm on lunch break at work), but it seems to me that the reversal of the expanding mage-storms in "Gryphon" to the contracting mage-storms in "Storm" MUST bring together the two series together - maybe with a "time" gate... ttfn, judy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 May 1995 11:06:06 BST From: RUNDLE-+AT+-wilma.bcasd.az.honeywell.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Vanyel's children Message-ID: <950502110052.22604d59-+AT+-wilma.bcasd.az.honeywell.com> >Errrr. Well, the original question was mine, and I did finally find the answer in the _Magic's Price_ - the fourth child is Arved. Arven? Darn, now I forgot again. Anyway, there is zero sex data. I was assuming from the name that it's a boy. Others have stated that its a girl. And yes, it probably will be extremely difficult to trace his/her descendants. Oh well, interesting thought though. I just got two of his CDs: Mysterious Mountain/And God Created Great Whales (both mentioned by Tannim in Chrome Circle) and the Mount St. Helens/another one I can't remember now (both very excellent). If anyone out there likes modern symphonic stuff, get these! Misty (and Tannim) have marvelous music taste - if I haven't heard of it, I try to find it and listen to it, and usualy buy it!! While I'm on the subject of music, what do you think should be my first Firebird filk purchase? I'm leaning towards the Vanyel tape, but want some more input first. Thanks in advance for your help! Yes, it exists: _Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast_ (generally just called _Beauty_), published by HarperCollins (or at least the hardcover version in front of me was). BTW, question: I know Mercedes Lackey collaborated on _The Dragonsbane_ with Andre Norton -- does anyone have any idea if there are plans for a sequel? It certainly seemed like one was possible.
