A few years ago I submitted several stories to Ms. Bradley (for S & S, a Darkover anthology, and her Fantasy 'zine) and although she didn't actual ly buy any of them, she did keep two of them until their respective final cuts, and she was very encouraging. I don't have anything published yet, mainly because shortly after I got those stories back I went back to school and found myself without time to breathe, let alone write for fun and profit. (Instead I was writing papers for professors who were sure I didn't have anything better to do with my time.) Now that I've graduated with my library tech degree, MAYBE I'll have the leisure to let my brain roam more creative paths. Anyhow, best of luck, Lyn!!! You mean you _won_? :-) :-) We usually ended up having stopped the nasty, and escaping with a few candidates for therapy :-). Although we did win against some of the weaker ones once - thanks to some dynamite tied to some cans of gasoline, and running very fast... not so much a victory, more a satisfying strategic withdrawal :-). > > (Which is probably why, although I like the Di Tregarde books, I tend to > > class the Velgarth ones as more clearly original). > > It's a close call, to my mind. The Di Tregarde books certainly don't have so > much originality in their setting -- you wouldn't expect them to, they are > set in (an analogue of) the "real world". > True. Most of the originality is in the nasties, and the story, rather than the setting or the plot - And things get harder for character development in a series as well, once your hero[ine] has reached a competent level; Maybe that's why Misty switched characters - using a new main character lets her introduce us to the character, and use fresh background material - all of which helps to keep things interesting; that'd be harder to do (but not impossible, just harder) with a Di Tregarde story (at least a followup one, rather than a prequel - she's competent, we've seen some of the background and associated characters; that makes it somewhat harder to patch in large sections of fresh stuff, or justify dramatically interesting mistakes..) Actually, you can see similar things in the Velgarth series - It helps when Misty hops around to a new area or viewpoint - after the arrows books, she changed time for the Last herald mage books - a totally new setting; similarly for _Oathbound_ and then _By The Sword_. Returning to the original setting for the Wind books didn't really work as well; the Gryphon books are another new setting, and using a karsite viewpoint character for _Storm warning_ gives us another fresh look. A switch of scenery just spices things up a bit; the new background just adds that extra zest to the story - the Winds books aren't as strong there, and that may be why I think the others tend to be better. (I suspect that another reason may be that Misty's better at doing convincing Good Guys than Supervillains). The clever bit is how she manages to tie things together while still keeping the different bits different :-) For an example of how *not* to do it, look at Edding's Mallorean; I liked the Belgariad, but the Mallorean turned into an action replay - the characters went on, but the freshness *didn't*. -- _|_ / | Jerry Cullingford jc-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk (Work) \_|_ jc-+AT+-selune.demon.co.uk (Home) \__/ Hemel Hempstead, UK jerry-+AT+-shell.portal.com (alternate) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 May 1995 15:29:12 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Jennie Talldeer / Di Tregarde Message-ID: <9505051429.AA26934-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> > What? Again, to pick up another roleplaying bit (look, I just got back from the major convention in the UK, all right? I'm still in that mindset. :)), it's hard to write challenging and interesting adventures for high-level characters. If they can do most of the things that they need to, they don't learn much that's new and they don't find the process terribly interesting. It's much more fun (== interesting to read about), from either the player or the DM view, if you actually have to try and think up ways of doing things rather than just using your +17 Sword of Slaying-Everything-That-Moves, or your 88th level Spell of Solve Adventure. :) > A switch of scenery just spices things up a bit; the new background just adds > that extra zest to the story - the Winds books aren't as strong there, and > that may be why I think the others tend to be better. I suspect it is because most people would like to think of themselves as Good Guys -- including most writers, because the Bad Guys are out robbing banks, taking over the world, summoning Great Cthulhu or whatever, rather than sitting down and writing books. :) > The clever bit is how she manages to tie things together while still keeping > the different bits different :-) > > For an example of how *not* to do it, look at Edding's Mallorean; I liked the > Belgariad, but the Mallorean turned into an action replay - the characters > went on, but the freshness *didn't*. You can still access them via listproc (the 'index' and 'get' commands), but now: 1) FTP: all archives of the list's new incarnation, plus the (old) version of the FAQ (soon to be replaced by the new one), plus some of the old archives are available at: ftp://ftp.herald.co.uk/pub/lists/lackey-archives/ 2) WWW: there's a page about the list at http://www.herald.co.uk/local_info/lackey_list.html which includes a link to the archives. The rest of the old archives will show up when I have time to put them there; it is an unbelievably tedious job 1/2 :) If you have trouble accessing either of the addresses above, try substituting "vanyel" for "ftp" or "www" as appropriate. I'm told that the UK's main DNS server should be getting its act sorted out today sometime, but I'll believe it when I see it. *grumble* Cheers Mel. PS. Please don't publicise this too much just yet, since all of the above hang off a server I don't want brought into the public eye for another week or so. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 May 1995 14:18:47 -0400 (EDT) From: Rosario Holsen-Baker To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Ummm, hi, ummm, is this mike on?
