Which leads to my major gripe (well, one of them) with modern fantasy. How often do we read about relatively weak characters? How often do we see mages with one or two spells going up against the bad guys? I can think of one example - With A Single Spell, by Lawrence Watt-Evans, which pits a 'mage' with little more than an 'ignite tinder' spell against a dragon. Generally, though, we just get hideously powerful good guys verses equally powerful bad guys. (The Belgariad is very bad about this!) And yet, low level spells/powers/whatever can be just as effective, if applied in the right way at the right time - and I think that makes a better story. It's one reason I liked the Arrows books... > It's much more fun (== interesting to read about), from either the player or > the DM view, if you actually have to try and think up ways of doing things > rather than just using your +17 Sword of Slaying-Everything-That-Moves, or > your 88th level Spell of Solve Adventure. :) Morenkainen's Mighty Disjunction, Gamemaster's Spell of Amnesia, and a few hundred level-draining undead ought to do the trick. *grin* Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 1995 14:19:28 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Roleplaying Message-ID: <9505061319.AA15568-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> I play Call of Cthulhu and sometimes AD&D. I'd be glad to host a virtual swim party right now (it's in the low to middle 90's every day!) We're having some gorgeous weather. On a similar note, I'll gladly split a bottle of Champagne with someone. And Matt, it's okay. Pigeons aren't endangered (hee hee). Sorry, couldn't resist. Too many kangaroo rat stories this week. And finally, I think that the Kyree Warll was in fact bonded with Tarma, by choice, but still bonded. As in it would have been extremely painful for either one if the other died. He said "I bond with you" or something to that effect. The Tayledras don't seem to have any other bonds, although we could speculate that Firesong and his Dyhelli (sp?) steed might be bonded - you know, the one that's a magic-user. My Tayledras persona (if I ever get all the reqs met) will have a wolf companion as well as a bond-bird. I don't know if that sort of thing counts (or if it will get accepted). Keeping in mind that the Tayledras are famous (infamous?) for altering creatures (like Geyr's dogs), I wouldn't be suprised if they could create other bond-creatures besides the birds. After all, they altered the birds to create the bond-birds. How about a bond-rabbit? Anyone? (Sorry, I'm making a vaguely veiled reference to Monty Python's Holy Grail Killer Rabbit). I can't seem to find the book at the moment for all the details, but I bought it B. Dalton. I'm sure they've the information on their computer. Just a brief outline for those interested of the story. Albreich was an officier in the Karsite army. All he knew at this time was that he knew when things were going to happen, when his soldiers were going to be ambushed, etc. Other people commented on it, and he was able for a while to pass this off as the will of Vkandis. However, it happened once to often and the cry of witch went up. Albreich was locked up in a shed or some such nonsense and sentenced to be burned. His companion broke into the building as the flames came closer and carried Albreich off across the border. The rest is history. This part of the story is mentioned I think in Arrows of Queen somewhere. Hope this sheds more light on the subject. broke into the Jena jswank-+AT+-mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu ***Declare peace once in a while.
