Okay... *evil grin* I'll bring some white chocolate companions, a white chocolate gryphon :-) and some Kal'e'nedral Kola (ducks behind virtual setee) :-) :-). On a more.. er.. relevant :-) note - do we ever get to see Hertasi cooking? Given that they like pretty things, it'd be interesting to see what they'd do with the food.... Zen Cookies (*) all round! And Matt J said, Isn't that just like a cat? Sorry, guys, I take exception to that. For one thing, it may accord with the common *perception* of what cats are like -- just about every cat I've had has been quite sociable. In fact, Finn McCool (mistakenly named after the Irish hero, since he is such a scaredy-cat) the red tabby, underwent a complete character change. The first year we had him, he was very reluctant to be touched. Hid a lot. (Of course, this might've been the result of having lived in a frat house as his first home after leaving his mother and littermates--to this day, an unknown young man won't see much of him on the first visit to our place) But after the older red tabbly, Star, died, he was so lonely that he came to us begging for comfort. He is now a lap- and chest-sitting cat, and very affectionate with everyone...even young men, after the first encounter. Cats, or at least my cats, are really wedded to habit. Upset or vary the routine, and they get into a snit. Okay, so Altra helps Ulrich as well as Karal, and reports to Solaris. The Companions help other Heralds, and have been known to help non-Heralds (and what are the chances of Florian's staying with Karal?) I kinda thought Gesten was one, but now may be wrong, as the ones in "modern" Valdemar seem non verbal and very shy, and Gesten is anything but! -grin- And we try to talk Valdemar as we pass the teacups, and the like, but then it moves to a separate header! -grin- ::passing for a second round of tea:: Anne annes3832-+AT+-aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 May 1995 17:06:13 -0400 (EDT) From: "Barbara G. Jacob-McDowell" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Ahem. Message-ID: Anne, If I remember rightly, Gesten was very good at coming up with goodies--although he usually got Amberdrake's meals from the cook-tent, didn't he, unless Drake ate over there himself? The modern ones aren't non-vebal--even one of the newer ones just coming to the Vale at the beginning of the second *Winds* book do speak to Elspeth. "Need towel?" it hissed at her. "Need drink?" She didn't always understand their accent, but they did talk. The previous ones had tended to be less visible than the newer ones, who could hardly wait to start hacking at the neglected underbrush--but how much of that is due to the differences in the way the humans they served perceived them? After all, as Darkwind says himself, the Kaled'a'in clan of k'Leshya integrated the nonhumans completely into the clan, consulting them about things like designing homes so they were convenient to them too, not just to humans, unlike the Tayledras clan k'Sheyna, which didn't. If you were fully a member of a group, of equal standing, wouldn't you be more apt to express yourself? The hertasi need to help is a part of them, thanks to recovering from some undefined trauma...sounds to me that how expressive they are has something to do with their role in the group. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I have the feeling that with *Black Gryphon* being written after the *Mage Winds* trilogy, ML came up with the idea of the hertasi (okay, okay, she wrote about the one who was a mage earlier, but only about him, and he was an unusual case) but she really only comes up with a role for "ordinary" hertasi in the *Winds* books, and then in *Black Gryphon* elaborates on that--even though it is chronologically earlier, it was written later, and often characters or types of characters evolve in later books. Jewel in *BG* is shy, or anyway confused and quiet--I got the impression that she was younger and more uncertain than Gesten--and she is definitely a hertasi.
