Not exactly...because Tannim's family never tried to make him be something he wasn't. They weren't certain they wanted him to be a Racecar driver, but they let him do it anyway, and they still loved him. It took Withen & co. a lot longer to figure out that they still loved Vanyel, and accepted him. Although, I think the _almost dead_ scenario does get played out in Misty's books a lot. Talia, Vanyel, Kethry, Tannim, and Di, although Di not quite so much because she's too smart to be almost dead. More "very in pain" than almost dead. "Very in pain" is a popular theme among fantasy writers, period. I think the idea is that vulnerablity (sp?) is an attractive feature, and that if you have pity for a character at some point in the story, your heart will go out to them, and you'll want to protect them from the world and marry them and have their children/have children by them. :) Violins in the background... :) By the by, funny little ML-related story. I was reading the Blade, a gay weekly newspaper here in Washington D.C. (home of trash people who don't pick up, potholes that never get repaired, libraries closing on Sunday, and a (formerly, at any rate) crack-addicted mayor who leaves for West Africa and says, quote, "What crisis? there is no crisis in D.C." Bitter? Me?) and there was a supplement inserted for Lambda Rising, a gay bookstore here in Washington, D.C. (see above.) It had thumbnail descs of all sorts of books they carry, and in the "Fantasy" section, what should I see but, in *big* letters, Mercedes Lackey, and underneath, listings for Magic's Promise and Magic's Price. She was the only author in the whole section with a demi-listing to herself! I\/ Catherine Osborne "I will not go down to I\/ Sundancer posterity talking bad I cosborne-+AT+-sidwell.edu grammar." They offer 3 locations. Washington D.C. Baltimore, MD. And Rehoboth Beach, De. I think that the awards mentioned are called the LAMMYS. Please don't hold me to this. The reasoning behind this, ( as I understand it ), the ABA, or American Booksellers Association, has an annual conference where they hand out awards. Nothing in the gay/lesbian genre so Lambda Rising started their own awards and that is when publishers started to notice this part of society. For more information you can contact them at: 1-800-621-6969. I believe that that # is in the US only. E-mail is lambdarising-+AT+-his.com. Does it ever > say how old Tannim was when they met? He [Sam Kelly] tilted his head to the side. "So, what happened the first time _you_ saw magic at work?" Tannim laughed. "I freaked. For the first few minutes, I thought someone had slipped me recreational pharmaceauticals without my noticing. Then, once I figured out that everything I saw was realy, I just hoped that whoever was duking it out didn't notice _me_. I was -- oh, sixteen or so -- and I kind of got caught on the sidelines of a magic duel." He waited to see the effect of that revelation on Sam. "Fair Folk?" Sam asked after a moment. "A duel between elves?" Tannim shook his head. "No. A witch and a sorceress. The witch was the good guy -- or rather, gal. I didn't know who the bad guy was, or that it _was_ a female at the time. I was just glad the witch had a good sense of ethics and was trying to keep the mayhem to a minimum where the audience was concerned." "Born to Run" pp 55-56. That's how old Tannim was. Here's the answer to the other half. "Then things at the dance got ugly. Somebody there was using the emotions as a power source. I noticed, and so did that lady writer -- Tregarde? Was that her name? She not only saw what I saw, but knew it was trouble. An adult, seeing it as sure as I did. It wasn't my own little fantasy anymore. Showed me I'd have to stop playing around with magic, or it'd eat my lunch." He'd had a long talk with Chinthliss that sleepless night. Given how things looked on the surface, intensive phsychotherapy seemed like a fine option until his not-so-imaginary friend had confirmed it all. The magic he'd been playing with was real; the things he'd been seeing we're real.
