Has anyone else read "Blood Price" by Tanya Huff (it's advertised in the Firebird catalog) and noted the similarities with the Di Tregarde books? Now, granted, there are differences. But in BP we have: a. bodies drained of blood b. a "good" vampire c. a female investigative person d. a lead character who writes "bodice rippers" e. the vampire getting badly creamed by the bad thing, and the female lead domating her blood for it to survive. Granted, there are only a finite number of possible ways of writing stories about modern urban vampires as heroes, but it still struck me as pretty similar... it's not by any means a bad book, though, I think; if you're waiting for the next Di book, you could do worse than look at it. IMHO. Hmm, maybe I should start up a Tanya Huff list :) However, the similarities between Di and Victory (lead character in Huff's books) become a lot less marked after book 1. Blood Trail, book 2 (someone please correct me if I am muddling these titles), deals with werewolves, something Di hasn't run across yet. Blood (I can't remember), book 3, is not totally dissimilar to Burning Water in feel... no, I take that back; it's more reminiscent of Anne Rice's "The Mummy". Maybe if I'd read Huff ahead of the Di Tregarde novels I would feel that she was more original. It's not that I'm accusing her of plagiarism, nor of being consistently derivative, but that I can look at her books and say "oh yes, that's like X" rather than "wow, this is original and brilliant". Which is something of a shame, really. Now. Did anyone who has read book 3 notice the subtle reference to a certain fantasy author who shall remain nameless and her spouse? I nearly choked on my coffee. :) *grin* Mel. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 May 1995 15:24:20 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey Subject: ADMIN: old archives Message-ID: <9505161424.AA23049-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> All of the archived files from the list's previous incarnation at uel.ac.uk should now be available, except for digests numbered before 33 which were compiled before we began archiving the list. Otherwise you could end up with a VERY hot mailbox!!!!! On an ML note: I have been re-reading the Arrows books, and I was wondering: does anyone else feel like jumping in and shaking some sense into Dirk at any point???? AAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!! The boy is enough to drive a person CRAZY!!!!! Also, does anyone know just how old Skif is? First he has a thing for Talia, then he has a thing for Elspeth... What is the age difference there? I mean, he keeps calling Talia "little sister". Is that just because she is smaller than him? Or is she younger? So how much older does than Elspeth does that make him? I mean, he keeps calling Talia "little sister". > Is that just because she is smaller than him? Or is she younger? > So how much older does than Elspeth does that make him? > Skif was a herald in training when Talia arrived at the Collegium. Talia was thought very young to be chosen by Roland, but Seleny (Sp?) also remarkes that it may be good because Talia is fairly close in age to Elspeth (who is about 6 at this time). Skiff gets his whites and goes off on circut at the end of the first book, Talia had been there a year. I'm assuming Skif was 17 at this point (kind of average for whites). I think Talia was 14 at this time. I remember a conversation Talia had with the other female Heralds-in-Training soon after she arrived, where she explained that "they" were going to make her get married, and one of the others remarked on being married off so young. This would make Skif 2-3 years older than Talia, and Talia about 8 years older than Elspeth. Thus Skif would be about 10 years older than Elspeth. Since I don't have the book in front of me, this is all generalized. Message-ID: <950516145937_120717678-+AT+-aol.com> Tannim does seem to mess himself up on a regular basis, doesn't he? I think the reason Misty does that is to remind us (her faithful readers) that although good can conquer evil, light triumph over darkness, it is only at a cost--and that cost is usually horrible in direct proportion to what it buys. Another note about his name, "Son of Dragons"; I seem to remember reading that Chinthliss thought it was a good joke for another reason. Tannim's parents' last name is Drake--which means "dragon". >> And I'll be around most of the summer too, except for brief excursions to Boulder (CO) and Seattle. Does anyone on this list live either of those places? << Congratulations, Jean!! And yes, I live in Seattle. If hydrology means what I think it does (study of water?) then you've picked a good place to visit. We have water in just about every way it's possible to have water--Mel would feel right at home. Has anyone else read "The Godmother" by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough? It's funny, and silly, and at the same time it's deadly serious. It's also set in a Seattle-of-the-future, a future where Republicans have been in office a little too long. (Sorry, my politics are showing . . .) One last thing. (I promise!) Two good gay/lesbian books I have read are "Gossamer Axe" by Gael Baudino, and "Venus Envy" by Rita Mae Brown (I think). "Venus Envy" is mostly just regular fiction, but it does have fantasy overtones. Until next time! ~Sandi~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 May 1995 15:54:12 -0500 (CDT) From: "Ishmael I. Skif had been there an unspecified amount of time but did get his whites at the end of the book when Talia had been there about 2 years I think. Elspeth was about 7 when Talia arrived so Talia is about 6 years old then Elspeth and Skif is probably 3 years older than Talia. Adding it all up makes Skif 9 years older than Talia. I think the ages in the Winds books are harder to figure because it seems in the first book that Elspeth must be much older than Darkwind but in the second book it seems as though they are the same age. Can anybody figure this one out? -Andra ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 1995 00:38:43 -0400 From: URAMESS-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Dead list revival...
