But I challenge the idea that published stories are necessarily good; I could point at several books which have been published and, to my mind, either (a) weren't worth the paper they were printed on or (b) would have been a lot better either for competent editing or for the writer having been taught his or her first language correctly. Ahem. I won't go into detail as to who, or which books, since it would probably degenerate into a slanging match of the sort of which this list has, ever since its inception, been remarkably free. Still, the world would be an unutterably boring place if we all liked the same books. (Despite that, anyone who has managed to get more than three stories into White Wolf's book of Werewolf short stories has my admiration. I gave up, and I don't often do that -- I think the last book which I gave up on before that was Bret Easton Ellis's "American Psycho", and that was for entirely different reasons) Mel. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 1995 7:03:43 -0600 (MDT) From: RUNDLE-+AT+-wilma.bcasd.az.honeywell.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: reviews Message-ID: <950518070343.2261a164-+AT+-wilma.bcasd.az.honeywell.com> I'd guess the easiest way to do this is to list all the books, and have one person take down requests from reviewers. In other words, have one person serve as the "review mistress". So you can claim your favorite book to review, but if someone else has already reviewed it, you pick another one. Or we could simply DO the reviews, post them here, and then vote on the best one for each book. But that might cause some hurt feelings. Any other ideas? Anyone have the list of books in front of them? There may be enough to go around. We've got the Last Herald-Mage series, the Arrows of the Queen, The Winds, the Storm books, the Gryphon books, the Oathbound books, By the Sword, and the short stories. I think that's it for Velgaarth. Then there's the Serrated Edge books. And Di Tregarde Books. And the short story. And Sacred Ground. And Elvenbane. The Ship Who ? (searched?) There's several more collaborations I'm sure I'm leaving out. What else did I forget? We could also do a review of the Firebird products that are directly related to the books. Like the Heralds, Harpers and Havoc tape/CD. ETC. Wow! This woman has really produced a lot of stuff over the years. It seems like we could each take a book, and given the low volume on the list right now, we'd probably end up doing more than one each! This should keep the discussion going Iris (who is sure she said something controversial in here somewhere) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 1995 15:13:09 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: reviews Message-ID: <9505181413.AA15446-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> Iris said a lot of really useful stuff about what could be reviewed, including: > Or we could simply DO the reviews, post them here, and then vote on the > best one for each book. But that might cause some hurt feelings. > Well, I don't see any particular reason to keep it strictly to one per book; everybody's going to have different opinions, after all, and I value those. What I would like to avoid, though, is the situation where everybody reviews the same book, so it might be as well to have some sort of list of who's reviewing what, just to try and cut down on excessive duplication. Much as I would like to keep the list, I am too busy at the moment (still rewriting the FAQ, for instance). Anyone else care to volunteer? (she said hopefully) Something that might also be worth keeping a track of would be some sort of "read on" list ...i.e. "If you liked _Arrows of the Queen_, you might also like ....". If anyone has a copy of any of the Bloomsbury Good Reading Guides (which I doubt), they do the same sort of thing in there. Oh, there's all sorts of compilable resources out there if we think about this :) Cheers Mel. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 95 10:42:20 EDT From: Jean To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Hidden names and collaborators Message-ID: <9505181451.AA16233-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> Hayla, all. I saw this at an auction once, and the bidding was quite high - then a group got together and put in a joint bid, which won. I think it was over 100pounds at the end... La Graf (aka Julia Ecklar) does this that I know of - look out for an "Admiral Shoji" in one of their books, named for the US filker "Joey Shoji". There were varying levels of appearance, depending on the size of the winning bid. The ones I remember include: 1. A character with your name will be mentioned... 2. ...and will appear in at least one scene... 3. ...with a lead character... 4. ...of your choice... 5. ...who will like them... 6. ...and they will survive the scene. > "Human nature is never so weak as in a bookstore" - unknown How true, how true... Who decided that this stuff was for kids? The same people that decide they don't want fantasy books in their library. Thats the only way I can get them in our library.... Unless I have my boss purchase the books for me and I donate the books to the library, I have to talk our children's librarian into getting the books for the children's section. That then forces me to catalog them as children's books.. At least I don't look as odd checking out the books, since I'm the one that put them there to begin with.
