Enjoyed it very much.... >> >> --Barra There is a sequel! "Under a Healing Sign" just came out. I'm just getting over a cold (sniff, cough) so my hubby bought it for me. It's really good so far -- wonderful stuff about pregnant Unicorns and a neo-natal class for Centaurs. Sounds like the folks in Crossroads need a "Foal Watch" like at the Collegium, though! I love the fact that Nick O. has done his Griffins so very different from Misty's Griffins. Hey -- maybe we should also have a "If you like this you should read" list....Horse stories for horse lovers, unicorn stories for unicorn lovers, and so on. Anyone else on this list watching the *X-Files* season finale tonight? (U.S. season finale, at least.) There was a discussion about Kethry's hair once -- I think Gillian, the actress who plays Scully, has hair the color of Kethry's. Oh, and Mel -- you'll like David Lanz, I'm sure. Really great music to read by. David Lanz does an INCREDIBLE version of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" on the album Christofori's Dream. Wind neath thy wings! Message-ID: Hey, Iris, what's the title of the 3rd book of Sylvia Engldahl's trilogy? I have the first 2, but never knew she'd written a 3rd! Good stuff! Speaking of terrific writers who should be better known, has anyone else here read any of Zenna Henderson's books about the People? Or *Holding Wonder*? Her stuff is hard to find too, alas. Answer to how to get archived stuff at libraries: make friends with a storyteller on the staff (usually in the children's room)...8^) Glad we aren't talking about politics--I am still furious over a phone campaign aimed at Linda Dickerson, a most competant, caring and outstanding businesswoman who happens to use a wheelchair who dared to try to get on the slate for County Commissioner; some unscrupluous, discriminatory bigot was having voters called and told that she was very ill and would die in office if elected. ANYBODY can die tomorrow; all it takes is an accident, which could happen to anyone! Sorry, but it is fortunate at times that we don't have mind magic here! "Never forget that the mind can be used like any weapon," said Elcarth to Talia and her classmates near the end of the first Arrows book (or maybe it was Ylsa, and I am paraphrasing, I know that's not exact! Don't have the book with me today.) --Barra ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 95 12:46:49 -0700 From: steph-+AT+-escher.mbi.ucla.edu (Stephanie Wukovitz) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Favorite authors (was Re: Dead list revival... Or > *Holding Wonder*? Her stuff is hard to find too, alas. {snip} > --Barra Yes, I have. They're great stuff. I was only able to read them because my mom had her books. I have found one or two in used bookstores. I've considered kidnapping my mom's copies but I'm sure I'd hear about it... Did you know that there is actually a movie based on her books called, I believe, "The People". It's amusing to watch more because of how they chose to adapt some of the scenes to the screen than the actual "quality" of the movie. Not too bad as a bad rental, though. For those unfamiliar with these works, these People, humanoid refugees from another world who are forced to flee their world when it was about to explode, have all sorts of "Mind Magic" including racial memory, telepathy, telekinesis, etc. As a race, they are pacifists. In one of the books, the People and Earthlings are described as having taken two different developmental paths: the People took the mental path and Earthlings turned to industry. Their ship breaks up as it enters the atmosphere; those who managed to escape from the ship get separated. These stories describe how they learn to adapt to living on Earth, how they re"Group" [;-) ], and how they interact with Earthlings. - Helen h-wilfehrt-+AT+-nwu.edu ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 1995 22:21:14 +0200 (BST) From: jc-+AT+-selune.demon.co.uk (Jerry Cullingford) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Favorite authors (was Re: Dead list revival... Apart from another non-people(?) collection called _Holding Wonder_, there was a UK collection called _The Complete People Collection_ or something equally obvious, which consisted of both previous anthologies plus around three or four additional stories - of which (as far as I can remember without having the book to hand) one or two were definately People related, one was People-but-marginal, and one was a "time travel"ish story with no particularly obvious link, which I'd seen elsewhere (maybe in _Holding Wonder_ ? -Jerry (at home) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 1995 18:36:00 -0400 From: Sarahnhct-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Nick O'Donohue book Message-ID: <950519183558_125004479-+AT+-aol.com> Could you post the ISBN number and publisher? But I couldn't agree more about a 3rd party. Unfortuantely Ross Perot is not it. Maybe the Libertarians? Or maybe we could start our own? Have a great weekend all!
