I must dig out my book of lists... I have to put in a plug here for EE Doc Smith. Specifically, the mental battles in the Lensman series (especially Second Stage Lensmen and Children of the Lens). For military SF, but with the realistic view of battles that seems popular, try David Weber. The science is fairly consistant, and provided you skip the brief page-long interludes describing why ships fight in exactly the same way as wooden sailing ships fight (well thought out, but not very relelvent to the plot!) things move along at a fair rate. Yesterday I managed to get my CD-Rom drive working -- thanks to those of you who offered advice --, had to order a different cable for my recalcitrant scanner, and suffered a line outage that lasted until 1:30pm today. Thanks, Demon. Still, that _did_ mean I finally had time to sit down and update the FAQs. I will post all of them to the list now -- with apologies for those with small mailboxes -- but I'll only post the list admin one (semi-)regularly, since it includes instructions on how to get the rest. Suggestions for additions and such always welcome. The HTML versions are also available but may be error-ridden for the next day or so until I get a chance to check them. It's quite hard to write HTML when you can't test it (Netscape won't start if I have no external link. Quite why this should be I'm not sure.) The Mailing List ------------------------ Version 2.0, May 24th 1995 Compiled by Melanie Dymond Harper New in version 2.0: Rewritten to reflect change of site. Added information about 'POSTPONE' setting. Changed feedback address. Swapped bibliography and administrative parts of the FAQ (admin now part 1, bibliography now part 3) New in version 1.4: External group information removed (now in part 5 of FAQ) New in version 1.3: changes to external group information. New in version 1.2: information about other ML-related groups (AOL, Genie & USENET); explicit address for feedback. New in version 1.1: information about release form; way of getting release form; 'new in ...' list. 1. What is this list anyhow? ---------------------------- This is a mailing list for discussion of the works of Mercedes Lackey, including both her fantasy and non-fantasy work, either solo or in collaboration with other authors. It is currently unmoderated. 2. How do I subscribe to the list? ---------------------------------- Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body SUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY your name If you have problems with this, contact the list owner (see below). 3. How do I unsubscribe to the list? ------------------------------------ Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body UNSUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY Again, if you have problems with this, contact the list owner. 4. How do I send messages to the list? -------------------------------------- Messages for the list at large should be sent to mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk (rather than to the list processor address) There is no requirement to follow any threads that may already be in progress. Feel free to start discussion on anything you like -- as long as it's at least vaguely relevant. Flaming, and rudeness in general, is strongly discouraged. 5. I'm getting too much mail from the list. Is there any way to cut it down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. Assuming that you do not want to leave the list altogether, mail the list processor (listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk), subject blank and message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL DIGEST If you would prefer not to see copies of anything that you have sent to the list, use the following message body instead; SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL NOACK (Note that these two options are mutually exclusive. To return to normal mail from either of them, use the message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL ACK instead.) If you will be absent for some time, you may wish to consider the POSTPONE setting. This is like NOMAIL for lists run under Listserv; you remain subscribed to the list, but do not receive mail from it until you specifically request to start receiving mail again. To do this, send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL POSTPONE - to cancel it, use one of the options above (ACK, NOACK, DIGEST). Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. 6. I've written this really great story in one of Misty's universes. Should --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I post it to the list? ----------------------- No, please don't. Reliable information (Judith Louvis who runs Queen's Own, the offline Misty fan club), indicates that you MUST get permission from Misty, in writing, before writing fan fiction in Misty's universe(s). Since I, as list owner, have no way to verify that you have received such permission, a decision has been taken not to allow posting of stories on the list. What you do between yourselves is, of course, entirely up to you. The release, however, is not valid for online fiction, only for printed fiction. As far as I am aware (as of 6th July '94) there is no way of getting permission to release fiction in Misty's world(s) online. A copy of the release for printed work is available from the listowner on request (private email; please don't post requests to the list). 7. Who is the list owner, anyway? --------------------------------- All problems, or queries about the running of the list, should be directed at Melanie Dymond Harper; mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk -or- mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk The second address should only be used if mail to the first address does not get a reply (this most likely means either the site is down for some reason or that I'm away - if the latter, the second address probably won't help either). Do _not_ send problems and such to the list at large. If it's something I've done, or not done, they won't be able to help you! I will try to announce any absences of mine in advance, so that the list members know if problems are likely not to be solved quickly. Any feedback on this post cheerfully received at mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk or mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (end part 1 of 5) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 1995 13:59:17 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey Subject: FAQ 2: merchandise Message-ID: <9505251259.AA04201-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> Mercedes Lackey Mailing List FAQ, part 2 ---------------------------------------- Merchandise, Ordering and Miscellanea ------------------------------------- Firebird Arts ------------- Firebird Arts is as much a part of ML as her books. Jerry Cullingford reports: Well, I've ordered stuff from the US; If you've got a WWW hookup, you might want to have a look at Future Fantasy's stuff at http://www.commerce.digital.com/palo-alto/FutureFantasy/home.html You can search through their catalog and order stuff online; they'll work out the shipping costs and let you know, so you can decide whether you want the stuff sent airmail (uncheap but FAST) or surface (cheaper, but can you wait that long :-) ). At least in the UK, books don't get stuck with VAT or import duty. Kim Morgan adds: I always order my books fromFuture Fantasy and they offer a very good service. You can just email them what you require and they will email back the costs with the choice of air or sea mail. The sea mail is very cheap but takes about 5 - 6 weeks to arrive. Filk is fan produced music . . . authors and fans write music and lyrics on books thay've loved . . . normally it is sung at conventions into the wee small hours of the night, lustily, by folk who get the words from photocopied sheets . . .some are on tune, some not . . . -grin- Firebird Art & Music is the place to find the filk Misty has written about Valdemar and other books she's read and written, as well as the work of other filkers! You'll either love it or hate it- filk seems to not be a 'take it or leave it' sort of music. If you like folk music, you'll probably like filk, but no guarantees! Case in point- I love it enough to buy tonnes of the stuff, as well as a bowed psaltery to PLAY it at cons, while my better half rolls her eyes and stomps out of the room, to drown it out with some Stone Temple Pilots! :chuckle: Hope I've Helped- Anne annes3832-+AT+-aol.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (end part 2 of 5) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 1995 14:02:31 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey Subject: FAQ 3: bibliography Message-ID: <9505251302.AA04593-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> Mercedes Lackey Bibliography ---------------------------- Heavily based on John Wenn's bibliography, compiled a couple of years back.
