Her Trilogy about "The Dark" is terrific with a good female central character - goes from somewhat of a wimp (can't blame her since she's suddenly bumped to another universe) to an excellent fighter, but she has flaws like everyone else. And, no, you are not alone, Antryg Windrose is a funny, wonderfully mischievous character. I don't exactly remember the page, (I don't have the books with me), but in Moreta's Ride, during a scene when a blue rider (A'murry, I think) times it by accident, he is going to meet his friend on the beach (actually the friend could be A'murry). The implication is that his friend (a male) is his lover. There are a couple of other places, but my memory refuses to obey. The oblique references to homosexual relationships are made in her later books --- not so much in Dragonflight, Dragonquest or the White Dragon. [CAUTION: FLAME MODE ON] The whole thing though is stupid! One little sentence or reference in an entire novel and SOME people blow it all out of proportion. I much prefer her three books (so far) about Sun Wolf and Starhawk: The Ladies of Mandrygyn The Witches of Wenshar The Dark Hand of Magic. I particularly liked the description of a shanghaied mercenary captain making a fighting force of inexperienced women. I think anyone who liked Tarma and Paks will also like Starhawk. The books manage to give a believable portrait (IMAO) of two people who, although following a brutal profession, have not themselves been brutalised. Someone tell me where? >Jenneke? Well, since you asked... There are several places where Anne makes quite clear that blue, green and some brown riders are homosexual, at least after the First Pass. In Dragonquest: When F'nor gets into the knife fight at Smithcraft Hall, the Fort riders' dragons are a steady pair ("They are together" -Canth). B'naj and T'reb are also referred to as Weyrmates. Seems pretty clear. In Moreta, as mentioned before, K'lon and A'murry are a steady and devoted pair, in spite of being at different Weyrs (Fort and Ista, respectively (now where have I heard that before...:-))). Among others: "Get us out of here," [K'lon] told Rogeth, sick to the soul of plague and death and desolation. "I *must* spend some time with A'murry. Then I'll be able to face this sort of thing." (End of chapter 10) Also, there's the whole section in chapter 11 when Leri and Moreta scold K'lon for timing it to see A'murry. They don't object that he's seeing him, note, just that he's timing it in order to do so. In the short story "The Second Weyr", Alaranth says to Torene, "It would be good for Dagmath's rider to have some of his own persuasion." It continues: Torene considered that. The blue rider preferred boys to girls. And Sean would prefer to have fewer of the speedy little green dragons out of action because their riders were taking maternity leave. "Are there any prospects in that line?" Torene asked. "Three." That's all I can think of off the top of my head. There may be more references... The opinion I mentioned in a previous post is from Anne via alt.fan.pern. To spill it was to invite terrible vengeance, as Shana, also known as the Elvenbane, had already discovered. She had been born into a world with one simple law - obey the elven lords, or be destroyed. Those elvenborn who had the strongest magic and pure elvenblood ruled all others; humans, halfbloods, and even elves of weaker magic, mere slaves who lived or died at the whim and fancy of thier masters. The dreaded elven lords ruled the land with the casual ruthlessness of those so powerful they fear only one another... until the young halfblood Shana won a victory for the downtrodden masses who suffered under the elven lords' lash. But Shana gained nothing more than grudging recognition for herself and freedom for the dragons and other halfbloods who fought at her side against thier oppressors. Now change is in the wind, and what began with Shana's struggle has spread to become a rebellion of all the oppressed across the land... If they could rise as one, the elven lords would be far outnumbered. But even so, none who would fight the lords are able to withstand their might. Their common cause must find in the elven masters some weakness, an Achilles' heel in the armor of their magical supremacy. When Shana encounters the Iron People, a tribe of human nomads immune to the magic of elves and halfbloods alike, she believes she has finally found the weapon needed to defeat the overlords. But her jubilation is premature. The nomads enslave her, binding her with chains made of a substance impervious to both magic and brute strength, the very substance that is the key to the entire realm's salvation - if she can but escape its chilling grasp. With all the color and excitement of fantasy only these two masters can create, Elvenblood, even greater in scope than its bestselling predecessor, is the rousing epic of an upheaval that will shake this storied realm to its roots. When I have Mosaic access again, I'll check out the Web page. Never read Tolkien but feel I should at least try (as he's part of the SF "Canon" along with Asimov, Lewis and Heinlein - IMHO.) Pern and the CBC: Too bad this project didn't "fly." Although I wonder how they would have done the dragons accurately back then, now with post-Jurassic park technology it might be better. I wonder if promiscuity or homosexuality is even at issue in this movie - it has no bearing on the plot, I would suggest to just not mention it at all. This is not to say I favor any "Don't ask don't tell" policy. But as a screenwriter, it seems to me that the sexual proclivities of the riders would be pointless to write about because it does not forward the action and it does not help to flesh out any main characters (F'lar, F'nor or Lessa, or Moreta or Sean and Sorka or anyone else that I can think of). All in all, a Pern movie is a worthwhile project and one that I would love to be a part of. I also think a Valdemar movie is not only worthwhile but doable. Trained horses plus computer graphics can bring the Companions to life. Mind-magic is easily accomplished with voice-overs, sound effects and good actors. Speaking of actors, I would hesitate to cast entirely with known stars. This is a very atypical movie and audiences would find it hard to accept favorite stars, who they have typecasted in their own minds, playing SF roles. One or two stars in secondary roles are enough - the rest should be lesser knowns or unknowns. Here's some ideas "off the cuff:" (this assumes we're talking Arrows - people wouldn't accept Vanyel as a Hollywood hero yet ... ) Sherrill - Winona Ryder Keren - Geena Davis Selenay - Susan Sarandon Talia - Sara Gilbert Skif - the guy who played Neil Perry in Dead Poets Society Dirk - Cary Elwes Kris - Elspeth - Ancar - Alan Ricker Rolan (voice) - Patrick Stewart Teren - Peter Simon Ylsa - Jadus - Elcarth - Hulda - Sharon Stone :) Just a start. There is hope for SF movies. I am currently trying to adapt "Stranger in a Strange Land" as a personal project. This is set in the early 1900's, again in a world where magic is real (and where England, France, etc. co-exist with tiny countries that exist only in this book). Remember, the SAME THING happens with the riders that is happening with the dragons. The green (female) dragons, who all have male riders (with a single exception) mate with blue, brown, and occasionally bronze (male) dragons--which all have male riders. Guess what happens? Therefore, all riders (except for queens) had to be at least bisexual if they were going to be mentally healthy. (Can you imagine a good old American boy becoming a dragonrider? To quote a local magazine, "most American guys are very protective of their butts.") I always felt a little sorry for blue riders, because it seemed to me that they always took hind teat, so to speak. They never had very much status, and they were unlikely to be the winner in a mating flight. On movies, etc.--I've always hated the thought that my favorite books might be made into movies; partially because of casting problems, and partially because of how they always hack up the book in order to produce the screenplay. This happened when they made "Anne of Green Gables" etc. (by Lucy Maud Montgomery) into movies and completely changed almost everything about it! Besides which, Megan Fellows just didn't have the right personality to play Anne. (If they ever make the Belgariad into a movie, she might be good as Ce'Nedra--she does "regal" very well. And Cicely Tyson would be a stunning Polgara.) I've never really thought about casting Misty's books, but I've always sort of imagined Kris as a young Christopher Reeve. Until next time! ~Sandi~ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 95 9:09:17 EDT From: dtoxopeu-+AT+-ccs.carleton.ca (Deanna Toxopeus) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: IMHO Message-ID: <9506011309.AA23046-+AT+-superior> Sandy Haas writes: > > What does IMHO stand for?? > In My Humble Opinion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deanna Toxopeus | !!!!!SAVE SEAQUEST!!!!! I admit I haven't read the Pern books in over 10 years, and I was pretty naive about homosexuality back then, but... I never saw it. Honest! The way I read the part where the guy who was timing it to see the other person: I assumed the other person was either a girl at another weyr, or his best buddy. It never occurred to me that they were lovers. And as far as mating flights, I always got the impression that when their dragons mated, the riders were with their girlfriends/wives. I admit that I thought some of them probably "mated" with each other at times, but it never occurred to me that this was a widespread thing. This isn't like the Vanyel books, where it should be impossible not to see the sexual encounters between Van and 'Lendel. I will have to go back someday and look for this stuff in the Pern books. I swear, I never saw it coming! Weird. Since it is such a minor part of the Pern books, though, I doubt that it would bother most people. It does sort of change the perspective though. Everyone I've heard from said they changed it completely. I dunno. I just know it looks like an awesome movie, and I for one plan to enjoy it tremendously. I just had a really great thought, though. How about Keanu Reeves for Skif? He's the right build, and he can be pretty mischievous. >From the descriptions in the book, you'd damn near need the Hunchback of Notre Dame for Dirk How about ?? Depardieu? I can't remember his first name. He played Christopher Columbus, and was in Green Card? He's homely enough. Yes, he's homely enough (one might almost say "ugly"), but he's a bit old for it. We need someone youngish and ugly ...,,, Mel. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 1995 10:12:38 -0400 (EDT) From: diamond-+AT+-wizvax.net (Jill Wilber) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Cc: diamond-+AT+-wizvax.net Subject: Re: Dragons and movies Message-ID: Sniped and cut > I've never really thought about casting > Misty's books, but I've always sort of imagined Kris as a young Christopher > Reeve. > > Until next time! > > ~Sandi~ > > > I think he's a little tall to be Kris, least what I consider Kris to look like. Not that i matters much, I -very- much doubt Christopher Reeve will ever act again. I'm wishing with all my heart he lives, but his injure is very sever. From what I know of '3 day eventing' he has one of the worst injures, but having seen the fence, I can see just how it happen in my head. :( Diamond, the usualy silent one. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 95 14:55:37 BST From: p.m.lynch.bra0125-+AT+-oasis.icl.co.uk To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: RE: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 33 Message-ID: <9506011355.AA02268-+AT+-getafix.oasis.icl.co.uk> Tamra asked how to get a web page by email. I'm posting the reply to the list, since it seemed possible others on a mailing list might not have web access. I've not tried this myself, but it comes from "Computer Weekly"'s regular "Getting Wired" feature, which I have found to be reliable. You send a message of the form: send http://www.best.com/~hart/lackey/ to the address listserv-+AT+-mail.w3.org ie, just place the complete URL of the web page (including the http://) after the word send. Any embedded hotlinks will be replaced by numbers in brackets. These will be listed at the end of the document, so you can then send a further message to retrieve them. The article says you can follow links to FTP and Gopher sites this way as well, though obviously not telnet or other interactive connections. You don't get the "multimedia" bits of the messages, just the text. If you send the message www to listserv-+AT+-mail.w3.org they will send more info about the service. The service is free - except anything you usually pay for your mail. Back on topic: I think Glenda Jackson would just fit as Savil, if she could be dragged back to acting.
