The way I've heard it, bronzes very rarely mate with greens, both because they're not particularly inclined to and because of the size difference. Remember that bronzes can be up to twice the size of greens, and that greens are known for cut-and-run flying, while bronzes are known for more or less straight line speed and endurance. Mirrim and what's-his-name are the only bronze-green pairing we hear about, and I tend to think that's because they're rare, not because they're offscreen. F'nor, however, is most likely bisexual, since we know that he has sex with Brekke and that Canth flies greens... >Guess what happens? >Therefore, all riders (except for queens) had to be at least bisexual if they >were going to be mentally healthy. I'm pretty sure that bronzeriders could be het, given the devotion of bronzes to their queens. There's also a decent bit of fan fiction somewhere out there which tries to explain how het chromatic riders could keep their sanity, by thinking of mating flights as good experience for use with their preferred gender. Also, remember that the Weyrs are known for their loose morality, and that it's quite likely that weyrbred lads would accept what happens during mating flights as part of being a 'rider, regards of whom they prefer to bed outside of mating flights. As for the low status of blue and green riders, as far as I can tell, that's deliberate on Anne's part. -jenneke, who will shut up on this topic now. I *am* family. I think, tho, that his male characters are much more interesting and sympathetic than most of his female ones. I don't think he understands women very well; (except the military types like Aviendha, who I think is great.) I wasn't surprised to learn he went to the Citadel, a military no-women college. He is *so* much more comfortable writing about his male and military characters than about his women-who-wear-dresses. Catherine's exactly right here! I laughed my head off several times at Nynaeve &co. All the women in his books remind me of either fussy hens or hawks or some other kind of bird. As for other books, how about Louise Cooper's Indigo series? I absolutely adored it. The Time master Trilogy was even better (i've read it about 15 times), but I think it's out of print now (anybody have a copy of The Master they'd be willing to sell me? I'll pay any extortionate price. I'm addicted) and I liked The Book of Paradox, too. That was written in the late 70s & is centered around Tarot cards. That's unfortunately out of print too. (If anyone has a copy of that they'd be willing to sell me, I'll kiss their feet for eternity!) Mirage was OK, but I just couldn't get into it like the other books. If you like melancholy characters, there's always the Elric books. IMHO, Moorcock was influenced far too heavily by Conan the Barbarian. If he hadn't tried to make Elric into a more intelligent Conan, they would have been much better. His referring to grown women as girls gets on my nerves, but considering when theywere written.... The first two aren't that sad, but the third one gets really depressing after the first part, when they invade Imyrrr. When I get the $, I think I'm going to get that new Elric anthology. Hopefully it won't be so alternately depressing & sword & sorcery swashbuckling... Has anyone read it? Actually, that is the point. Generally, it is accepted as "In My Humble Opinion" and is often used as a joke after long reviews and expostulations. There's an actual quote from Anne McC. that I saw once in the alt.fan.pern FAQ that confirmed the homosexual tendency of blue and green riders. Okay. I just copied this from the FAQ... 3b. Rider behavior during Mating Flights. The behavior of the riders of mating dragons (and to a lesser extent firelizard 'owners') has generated considerable controversy in this newsgroup in the past. During one particularly vehement flamewar sparked by the topic, someone queried the Dragonlady, Anne McCaffrey, herself: ---[begin included text]--- From: slf-+AT+-netcom.com (Sharon Fisher) Date: Wed, 23 Sep 92 18:26:59 GMT Presumably this will settle the issue? --- Date: 23-Sep-92 02:07 PDT From: Anne McCaffrey Subj: Pern question Well, now, it's like this...when the dragons mate, their riders are so consumed with their dragons' passions, that there's really only one way to vent it: enjoying the sexual act themselves. The double whammy is something incredible. Since most green riders are male, and most blue, brown and bronze riders are also male, the obvious need not be stated. However, it is permissible within the Weyrs for the less-enthusiastic about this pairing having an alternate of the opposite sex available. The green rider will also have someone of his preference available so that the double charge is not lost...if you don't mind me being a tad bawdy. Actually, many of the Candidates are weyrbred and accustomed to such demands and think little of it. It's the main bone of contention between the hidebound Halls and Holds and the the Weyrs for the Halls and HOlds don't really `like' such innovations. Still, the rider is always compelled by concern for his dragon and THAT consideration makes the difference in such a sexual situation. And it is ALSO an incredible experience, one to be treasured. And yes, there could be more female riders of green dragons to relieve that dilemma but after the early Plagues, women were needed more as mothers to increase the population (something men still haven't been able to do on their own ) and flying constantly between is how to abort on Pern. (Queen dragons are not always as horny as the greens and as they are low-level Thread fighters, their pregnant riders could generally manage without constantly going *between* in the performance of their duties.) Anyway, I thought homos deserved a place in the elite social structure on Pern. --- Does that answer the question completely? Or do you need diagrams? ---[end included text]--- Some people feel that Ms. McCaffrey wimped out in this declaration, but still, this is the best answer we have. === ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Jun 1995 15:07:08 +0000 From: J Hulley-Miller To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Other books Message-ID: <199506011926.PAA24194-+AT+-cnj.digex.net> Greetings, URAMESS-+AT+-aol.com wrote: >U> High Flight High Flight rings bells for some reason. And how about Melissa Gilbert as a grown-up Talia? Do you think that Lou Diamond Phillips could handle Darkwind? What about Tom Cruise as Vanyel? Yeah, I know he's straight, but he does have the looks, the build, and the skill to do that challenging role.
