Kethry did since weaponry wasn't allowed in the Duel Arcane. But she chose to face the adept because she felt she needed to. Plus it was one way to prevent that Adept from getting at Tamra and Jarvik (sp?) who were Kethry's liabilities. Calling the Duel made the mage focus his attacks only on Kethry and it allowed Kethry to focus on attacking the mage and not on defensive maneuvers to protect her companions. Yes, but what makes you think Tremane will be the next Emperor? Remember, he gated who-knows-how far away from the Emperor's castle(or whatever), and now he can't gate back. Perhaps he'll just be the next king of Hardorn, and Hardorn and Valdemar will be allies. It looks like the ally countries of Valdemar don't really have Heralds swarming into them, so (unfortunately) I don't see the Heralds expanding past Valdemar. So they should start appearing after the next, i.e. after my exams. I also recived a cover for the new book by Mercedes Lackey called The Fire Rose. I don't have a release date or price but its in hard back. Rosalind Hawkins is a medieval scholar from a fine family in Chicago. Unfortunately, her professor father has speculated away the family money adn dies, leaving young Rosalind with no forced to cut her education short, she agrees to go West to take a job as governess to a wealthy man in San Freancisco. A boom town in the 1850s, in 1905 San Francisco is the centre of culture in the new Wesr, and perhaps there she will rediscover a reason for living, But when she arrives at jason Cameron's mansion on a huill overlooking the Pacific, she discovers that there are no children, not even a wife, in residence: just the gentleman himself and his enigmatic manservant. Penniless, Rosalind stays despite her misgivings.Foe the household is very odd indeed. Despite there being but one servant, the huge house is immaculate and the food is prepared and served in the most elegant manner. Oddest of all is the master of the house : Rosalind never sees hom, but communicates only through a speaking tube, and only at night. But then... she is happy. For her job in the household is to read to him: Latin, French, Greek, Greman- and she feels herslf coming alive once more. As for Jason Cameron, through his contact with Rosalind, he, too, is renewed. An Adept and Alchemist, Master of the Elemt of Fire, he had attempted the old French werewolf transformation- and bungled it. Suck in wolf form, over the centuries he had slowly been losing his humanity. Roslind is bringing it back to him. But when a rival alchemist offers Roslind the chance to restore her family's fortune in exchange for Jason's secret, who will she side with? And thne the earthquake strikes..... My reasoning is that they are going to need a LOT of mages to handle the coming waves. The only place that seems to have plenty of mages is Tremane's army. So I'm guessing that Valdemar will approach Tremane, tell him about the waves and form an aliance. Demon, my service provider, were having network and DNS problems, which meant that mail was taking a lot longer to deliver and hence overloading the machine at this end somewhat. I shut down the server process until that was fixed, which it hopefully now is. We now return you to your regularly scheduled list traffic. Message-ID: <9E34BA07A1-+AT+-rackham.umich.edu> A new (and possibly stupid) related question. Does the guy(?) who wiped out the Herald-Mages and Vanyel have anything to do with what is going on in current books (Storm set)?? And why wasn't Vanyel concerned about identifying more mage-gifted potential trainees before he got wiped out?? I know they were all concerned about the attrition(sp?) and no replacements, but why didn't he go OUT and LOOK for them?? Were they just leaving it up to the Companions, and they chose for some reason not to be replacing the Herald-Mages?? I suppose it could be because the 'plain' Heralds were being thought of as being less than wonderful, but they had recognized that problem and were trying to deal with it. Somebody convince me that I'm wrong!! I need > some good news.. It seems to me that the mage storms are "reversing" themselves. All of the havoc that occured during the years following the destruction is reoccuring, but in reverse. I think I remember that somebody mentioned that this started after Falconsbane/Maar/Learth's death, and I have the feeling that what's happening is a "setting of rights. And magic just may well return to it's original form, or at least the way it was before the Mage Wars. Who knows. It might even be very amusing to find that the Tower had reappeared in the middle of a Shin'a'in encampment, or that some fisherfolk end up stranded on the highest pinnacle of Maar's old palace. I don't think we have to fear that magic will leave anytime soon. It makes life just too damn interesting. Just my $0.02 --Gyrfalcon =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ============================================================================== ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 42 ********************************
