Starting his career as Ma'ar and ending it, finally, as Falconsbane. Not only was he responsible as Learth (sp) for destroying the Hearld-Mages but he also removed, destroyed, or twisted all of the presumptive Hearld-Mage candidates, either by killing them outright or seeing to it that they wouldn't be chosen. Probally through similar means that Hulda used with Elspeth but with a lot more subtly. Vanyel had noticed that there were no candidates with mage gift but was kept too busy by Learth to look for any who might of had it buried and latent. After Vanyel died there may have been mage gifted Chosen but there was no one to train them. Just some change from the wallet of my mind. --Gyrfalcon =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. Not really Message-ID: <950609132831_67430099-+AT+-aol.com> I will agree that Elspeth is quite a handful, but I think she is working from quite a disadvatage. To start with, as has been mentioned, the court gives her no slack-always watching for the brat to come back. On top of that, she is treated way differently than other Heralds, even differently than her mother was. I think they did her a great disadvantage by not sending her out on her internship, instead keeping her around the city. The Intership seems to be the trial by fire for the Heralds. They get thrown out into the real world, where they make life or death decisions, and grow up! They left Elspeth under her mothers, and the councils, thumb. So, she hasn't really grown up any. Then, on what might be considered an internship of sorts, her partner decides he's in love with her, and tries to treat her as if she's made out of glass, she finds out she has mage gifts, and that her Companion is scheming behind her back. The last would be really difficult, as they are supposed to be really close... So, now (rightly so) she gets thrown into "last best hope" type situation. But, she still hasn't grown any. Then, when she hits the Tayledras, she gets as a teacher someone who is rusty enough that he cannot teach her properly, along with not explaining _why_, and in a culture that is really different. Along with the fact she has always been treated like a Personage, this brings out the worst in here. But,here, she grows up. I don;t recall her whining in Storm Warning, or really in Winds of Fury. Also, most of her whining is kinda mental, or just to Gwena, which amounts to the same thing. Granted, she is rather inflexible, and really stubborn, but is that really a bad thing in a Heir? Just my .02 on Elspeth. --melissa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jun 1995 13:29:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Gyrfalcon To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Another New Question! Also, we're told that lifebonded pairs are more likely to occur between brilliant/unstable people and supportive/stable people, and that Heralds are much more likely to have them than the general population is. When you look at the list, this certainly applies to Vanyel & co, Keren & co, (?) and Skif and probably to Starwind and Moondance. Talia, Selenay, Randi, and Treven may not be brilliant/unstable, but they're all in clear need of strong, stable support. Kerowyn is probably the closest we get to a 'normal' person having a lifebond with another 'normal' person. Starwind and Moondance are the only group that doesn't contain at least one Herald. The final reason is: the people who are hero/ines are by definition unusual, as are the people who have lifebonds. They were a select group of people who were a VERY small percentage of the overall population of Valdemar, let alone the remainder of the continent . These particular individuals were probably more likely to be lifebonded because: (1) of their personalities, they were largely selfless individuals who served others (eg. Heralds); (2) the lifebond generally gave them some stability and thereby it enabled them to better perform their own duties; (3) they already had other "gifts" which may have improved their odds of being bonded, eg. Mind magic, the Companion bond, etc. At one point, I think it was Keren while discussing lifebonding vs. love bonds as well as Teren's choice to leave his family when Chosen who said that Lifebonds were just slightly more frequent among Heralds than in the general population. As an aside, it is stressed frequently that there is a difference between life bonds & love matches/bonds - eg. Stefen saying that Vanyel & he had a life bond as well as a love match. To me this suggests that there could be life bonds where the two may not necessarily share a romantic relationship. But then we haven't really seen this, have we? You know, now that I think about it, the different classical divisions of Love: Eros - romantic/sexual love, Agape- a love between kindred spirits (as I define it), Filios - brotherly/sisterly love, and one more I can't remember. Well these sort of define the different types of bonds, with some overlaps of course: Eros, love bonds of course; Agape - a life bond, Companion bond, and a "Soul" bond like that between Tarma and Waarl (?); Filios - the "bonds" between Heralds, within the Shin'anin, Tayledras and Kalada'in clans. I'd better stop.....this is getting confusing and it's been a long time since I took that philosophy class entitled "Aspects of Love in Western Culture". What a title to have on one's university transcript, eh? But I digress..... Anyway, as a more general consideration, the life bond as a plot device adds a certain drama/romance/tension to the plot line and to the relationships between characters. The characters who have life bonds also seem to have more dangerous and exciting lives and thereby are good main characters. -Helen ......A Chicagoan who's experiencing Spring Fever withdrawal after an overnight switch from beautiful 90 deg F (30 deg. Urtho would have gone on to the Havens, or whatever passes for them, and wouldn't know it consciously if he reincarnated. The only certain reincarnation we see, in fact, is Tylendel/Stefen, and there are rather unusual circumstances surrounding him. I don't think Vanyel was a reincarnation of Urtho, although you could make a case, based on the evidence we have, that Baron Valdemar might have been. But again, Ma'ar's reincarnations have nothing to do with other possible reincarnations, since he's only been born once. Remember that they were using handaxes, made for chopping branches into firewood, not woodsman's axes. I've already read the descriptions of what personalities usually constitute such a pair, so you don't need to reiterate that. I mean what are the signs within the relationship that indicate that it is a lifebond. For example, do they have to be in close proximity to each other (kinda like Need and her bearers could not be separated too great a distance for too great a time)? Is there a sharing of power in any way? That kinda stuff. Vivian Choh "I am all that I claim to be. bi189-+AT+-freenet.toronto.on.ca I simply have not claimed all that I am" - M.
