First sentence of the blurb went (roughly, from memory) as follows:- "Sheynevara dreaded the thought of a loveless marriage to an Elvenlord, she longed to be like the legendary Shana half-elven and meet the dragons". At this point I stopped reading. Oh Gawds, not _another_ teenage-rite-of- passage novel. What's the betting she makes it? Any takers? Mercedes Lackey _can_ non-formulaic fantasy. Iwish she would do it more often. Tylendal couldn't have summoned the demons without Vanyel's energy, which in turn caused Vanyel to become the Last Herald Mage. Talia might have given into her grief and pain at the end of AoF without Dirk's love. etc., etc., etc. Well just my 8cents worth, all ideas, comments and rebuttals welcome. The only books which have come out in UK editions have been the LHM books, Black Gryphon, White Gryphon, Winds of X, Elvenbane & Elvenblood. I don't think the Arrows books have ever been published here, & all the Baen stuff seems only to be available on import, .... *clunk whirr* I do seem to recall seeing something online from Millenium, though, who apparently publish her over here, so maybe there will be more. Vanyel actively attempted suicide (I count it as two attempts, one trying to run off the edge of the world, which Yfandes saved him from, and one slicing his wrists open, which the Heralds as a group saved him from). Keren was passively trying to commit suicide by losing herself in her grief when Talia brought Sherill in with a substitute lifebond. IMO, they don't so much survive the loss as they're dragged kicking and screaming back into the land of the living by others. Remember that Vanyel was pretty certain Shavri would deathwill herself when Randi died even before he knew that she had opened the unrestricted channel... That kinda stuff. Let's see... The bonded persons feel what the other is feeling, want to be together (though they don't *have* to be, remember that Vanyel went to Rethwellan without Stefen), focus most of their emotional energy on each other, and can work as a single entity magically with training (there's a pair I left off: the two Savil was training...) or under extreme duress. The chief symptom seems to be spending all one's time thinking about the other, or being recognized as such by another lifebonded pair. -jenneke I *am* family. How could I not have family values? Robert Jordan is using a very similar idea in his current series. Time and people coming back to start/repeat everything again. In both cases they seldom know they are a re-incarnation. David Eddings also used this premise in the Belgariad books. There is one thing different between Misty's line and the other two......she doesn't seem to be heading towards a "time correcting itself" theory. She writes a "Celts in space" series, starting with _The Copper Crown". Nice and detailed, neat characters, unfortunetly still in the process of being written. One tri. down, one 2/3 done, two more ( I think) projected. The second trilogy, IMHO, is better than the first. Just a comment on an old thread-- I never finished the Lord of the Rings, either, but the Hobbit is one of my favorites. First fantasy novel, actually.
