Message-ID: <950614142640_70695326-+AT+-aol.com> >Why do YOU read Misty Shouldn't that be worded "How can you not read Misty?" Ok, back on subject, I discovered Misty through the LHM series, can't remember who told me about them but from the first I've been hooked. (who hasn't?) I cried through all three LHM books, Misty's characters come alive and work their way into your heart. I have always been reader of Fantasy but I can honestly say that Valdemar/Velgarth is my favorite place to escape to in reading. If everybody would sit down and read the LHM series and take to heart the messages that are found there about acceptance of not only others but one's self the world just make be a easier place to live. I have always know I was straight but I had a very good friend who was gay growing up, and never once have I had any problems accepting him for who he was. My husband is in the military and I live daily with thier militaristic attitude (he has changed his veiws over the years, but the Military as a whole has not) towards race, religion, and sexual preference, it is always a relief to escape into Valdemar or this board and find that their are others out there who can love a person for who they are and not what they do or believe in. Ok off the soapbox ::jumping down:: I just read Children of the NIght, Wheels of Fire, and When the Bough Breaks. While I still remain loyal to the Valdemar series, these have left me with the desire (husband not withstanding) to go out and post a notice requesting a sexy Vampire or Hard bodied Elf to come my way Magic is held in the heart and released in love. Jacob-McDowell" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Gayness/The effect of books & why I read ML/*Lammas Night* Message-ID: Nothing like having things to talk about! 8^) I can empathize with those who have spoken of coming from sheltered backgrounds where the idea of gayness was never brought up, much less an issue. I never even heard of it until I was in college, and supposed it would never have any effect at all on *me*--little did I know! Because my first husband was gay--and so uncomfortable about it himself I didn't find it out until partway through our 6 yr. marriage. I think he had thought it would "fix" him if he got married...it didn't. So much for "choosing"! People who believe that sexual orientation can be chosen don't *know* the anguish of someone who cannot choose but feels they should be "straight" (and I object to that use as much as I do to "gay"--is someone who is not gay gloomy? No more than the opposite, in this usage, of straight being crooked. Just different! My husband became an alcoholic, underwent a complete personality change--I left him for fear he would kill me, he became so violent--and died a bit less than a year after our divorce of AIDS, a death I wouldn't wish on the wort person on earth. The last 3 yrs. of his life were hard for both of us. I was helped a lot by the steady kindness and love of my adopted brother Rip, who happens to be gay, and if ever anyone on this planet could be a Herald, he is it. Well, and my current husband John. And a few other people. not excluding some reading this. But Rip and John were the first two to prove that to me. Bringing me to why I read and love ML's books. Because, in the old Quakerly phrase, they so often "speak to my condition." When I was a kid, my big brother Jeff would loan me books (for a price, but he had more allowance so could afford to buy more books). Part of that price was that I read what *he* wanted me to before I could borrow the ones I wanted to, so he is the one who introduced me to scifi/fantasy, and to start with, most of it was space cops&robbers and cowboys&indians stuff, just like Dodge City and Dragnet, only set on other planets....I didn't like most of it, but I didn't like Max Brand or Mickey Spillane, either. But Jeff loaned me *The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes*, beginning my love affair with Dr. Watson (email me privately if you really want to know why), and *The Fellowship of the Ring*, which are what got me into good mysteries and fantasy. Just realized it, but in Valdemar, Watson would probably have been Chosen, because of his loyalty and courage and dedication. No doubt he would have thought of himself as one of the "ordinary" Heralds or Healers. I value the qualities I mentioned; I value the qualities that characters in her books have, and their passion to develop their gifts, whatever they are. Most of them ring true for me (except for now and then, like the board in the back of the head thing, or the "little bird, I'd like to keep thee in my pocket" drivel--*surely* there are ways to indicate a dialect other than merely substituting "thee/thou" and "thy" for "you" and "your"). I love the good non-human species she has developed so well (haven't even seen *White Gryphon* yet, so haven't read it), especially the bondbirds and firecats, being a nut about raptors and a cat enthusiast. How dull life would be without enthusiasms! I doubt very much if I would have been chosen, although I like to think that I might've been allowed to hang out around Bardic....8^) It's not only escape; it's also to satisfy a desire to spend time with people who I would enjoy knowing and having for friends. I knew I was hooked on ML when I read about Talia's daydreaming about being with Vanyel--not in *being* Vanyel herself, or replacing him, but being the second banana. That was and is what I do. I still think I was accepted by the college I attended because out of all the applicants, I was the only one to admit to being a follower, not a leader--with all those chiefs, they *needed* at least 1 follower! *Arrows* is my favorite, followed by the earlier Tarma and Kethry book, because I like books that show how someone learns to become what they will do/be, and for the other reasons I stated. And seeing an alternate reality, seeing how well the author has created (in Tolkien's phrase) that secondary world. Haven't read Kurtz's *Lammas Night*, although I have enjoyed her Deryni books and the 3 Adept ones she's written with someone else. There's a 4th one? What's the title? Is it out yet? Anyone know? How is it? Forgive me if I rattle on--after nearly 6 yrs. of struggle, I had a major breakthrough with my Celtic harp last night, and I am actually floating above my chair with a sappy grin on my face. Hmmm, 4 pm. Only about 3 hrs. before I can get back to my harp! --Barra, jubilant! Do you think someone >could transcribe it here for the www impaired (I haven't taken the >class to tell me how to get there yet 8-) ). What's this about >Misty being threatened? Here's a mini-course on how to get there (WWW): First, determine if there's a browser on your system. The easy way to do this is to ask your sysadmin, or anyone cool on your system, if you have 'mosaic', 'netscape', or 'lynx' available. Another way, on UNIX machines, is to type 'which '. If it gives you an answer, you have access! Next, invoke the browser. Incense and candles are not required.:-) Mosaic and Netscape are graphical browsers and may need to be backgrounded in UNIX. Lynx is a text-only browser, just type 'lynx' at your UNIX prompt. Generally, invoking a browser puts you at your institution's home page or the browser's home page (I'm fairly sure that's where the phrase 'home page' comes from: it's the page you start from...). From there, you can click on links (highlighted or underlined bits of text (or images)) to go places or you can click on the 'open' button in Mosaic or Netscape (type 'g' in lynx) to type in a URL. URLs are the thingies that start with, say, "http://". You have to type in the entire thing, including the colons and slashes and so on. Try the URL in my .signature. (To get to Misty stuff from my page you have to ask about my interests and then go down to the books I like...) Cheers, -jenneke I *am* family. How could I not have family values? Neave was from Out-Kingdom somewhere, but I've never been able to figure out where. Surely if he was from Karse, we'd've heard more definitely about it, especially since he'd be at least as well suited to escorting Karal and Ulrich as what's-his-name was. I got the impression that pre-Ancar Hardorn wasn't quite callous enough to completely abandoned the orphaned poor, and there's absolutely no indication that Rethwellan is that brutal in general. That basically leaves Iftel and the western wilds. I don't think he's from the west, so my personal bet is on Iftel. Whether his Companion went in and fetched him, the way Alberich's did, or whether he ran away to Valdemar and was Chosen on the border, I'm not sure, though I have a vague feeling it was the former. Speaking of out-Kingdom children, does anyone have ideas on where Moondance was originally from? He says, at one point, that if he hhadn't quarreled with his lover, he might have "gotten as far as Valdemar and been taken by a Companion", which would tend to suggest that he was a distance outside of Valdemar when they quarreled, but what direction isn't mentioned... -jenneke, who really, really, really, really wants to know thhe story of how Savil first came in contact with Starwind... As I understand it, there were some missing royalties, but it isn't known why these weren't paid or what happened to them. (One of the people involved posted a public apology recently, for accusing someone based on documentary evidence which they now have reason to doubt) In addition, there was some dispute to a contract that a filker had signed - again, I don't know details. As far as I can tell, it was a mess for everyone concerned; there are two sides to every story, after all. I think it retails for about $4.99. I've NEVER seen it in hard cover. Whoever posted that it isn't as good as the previous three is right. I bought it the minute it came out. (I love reading Katherine Kurtz) Ms. Kurtz is an excellent writer and the historical content she puts in each book is wonderful, but I felt the plot line just a little thin in this one. It was as if she was trying to tie loose ends before proceeding any further. For anyone interested in the Knights Templar, Katherine Kurtz has just put out another book, an anthology, in which all the stories deal with the Knights Templar. The stories are somewhat dark, but the quality of writing is great. No magic, etc., but a good dose of history and religious background. Lisa ...it isn't dying honorably that counts... Hear, hear!! How can we get the LHM series as required reading in schools? Hmmm...that may actually be worth pursuing... -Daria ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jun 1995 11:27:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Ashke To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Karse born Heralds Message-ID: > > Neave was from Out-Kingdom somewhere, but I've never been able to > figure out where. Something that might also go along with him getting to Valdemar is that wasn't there a tendency of people (pre getting Chosen) to suddenly take off for Haven? I think it's mentioned in the Arrows books, when it was so unusual for Rolan to search out Talia. Certainly Savil did that. She packed up for Haven and got Chosen as she entered the gates. Iftel is strange (as every Valdemaran knows! :) A book about that might be interesting, too. Didn't Elspeth Peacemaker make a treaty with them? I'm also curious what happened to the Rethwellan treaty that Vanyel made with Queen Lithawhatever (Can't Rethwellans name their children things that are pronouncable and memorable? :) What happened to names like Idra, and Stefansen? And Raschar? Those were much easier to remember). It seems to have vanished by the Arrows time. I suppose it could have been broken, but I'm just curious. > Speaking of out-Kingdom children, does anyone have ideas on where > Moondance was originally from? I'd love to know that myself. Maybe a short story concerning him would be good. In M.Z. Bradley's Sword and Sorceress, maybe? Like the Tarma and Kethry ones? Hmm. One possibility is Rethwellan. They are DEATH on gays. Remember that Vanyel couldn't take Stef with him when he went to get that treaty because of the insult, and Rethwellan likely would have declared war on Valdemar just for that. Moondance does say that being gay was forbidden, and that was the reason he was cast out. > -jenneke, who really, really, really, really wants to know thhe story > of how Savil first came in contact with Starwind...
