Your friend might have been, say, the 50th person who wrote in to ask the same question, which might have given Misty a relatively understandable feeling of being harassed by the letter writers, no matter how politely the letter was phrased. If you're interested in Firebird's side of the story, a better idea might be to write to the relevant PR person and ask for a press release/official statement. No matter how much we like Misty's books and how well we feel we know her from reading them, she doesn't know us and there are a lot of us, and we need to keep these things in mind as fans trying to contact her. -jenneke I *am* family. The only changes made so far are that Fax has been renamed Raxol, and he lives through his duel with F'lar. Didn't they recently try to ban Huck Finn (again)? I also heard that Curious George is/was on the endangered species list because George "represents" little black boys, which is supposed to imply that all naughty children are black, and of course there was a problem with the fact that the Man in the Yellow Hat is white, male (representing white oppression? I'm not sure about the story on this aspect of Curious George, or rather, the man in the yellow hat...) I thought that Curious George was about a monkey whose name was George and that he was generally a curious monkey...I guess that I was wrong... I also have a story about the Freudian symbolism in the Cat in the Hat if anyone is interested. People who do not like Lackey Message-ID: <950615231334_95895901-+AT+-aol.com> Hi all- Seeing as how we're now involved in a discussion on this- let me toss in my three cents! -grin- The quote I am going to talk about is from John's letter, and he said: <> First off, the times I have either met Misty or had to write to her she has been polite, and, if anything, reserved but friendly. That out of the way- it could be your friend caught Misty on a bad day, or perhaps the fact that when this whole thing hit the net everyone emailed her, or wrote to her- all demanding her side of the story- some folk even taking for granted Misty was wrong and chastising her for taking advantage of filk artists and forgetting her own roots. No, it didn't make it right for Misty to rip at your friend, but remember, Misty is a human, and at times humans explode. I know *I* have a few sore subjects at any one time, and if someone who I did not know wrote to me and demanded to know my side of an issue that never should have been made public, *I* might explode at a person who really did not deserve it. The only thing I see that was truly bad was that this whole thing that SHOULD have been left a private matter between Firebird and the folk involved but became public fodder for everyone to discuss and have an opinion upon. I know, it's one of the things you get when you are famous, but still, that doesn't make it right. Well, those are my 3 cents on the matter- accept or refuse them as you like! -grin- Anne annes3832-+AT+-aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jun 1995 22:57:07 -0700 (PDT) From: "Kristin A. But Lessa would be eligible by direct inheritance, else she might have the right to designate the next Lord Holder. But how they would get her to the Weyr then? But I don't see what the benefit of not finishing Fax/Raxol off would be unless it was to minimize bad opinions of F'lar. On another note- I recently finished AM's new book "Freedom's Landing" - a novel based upon one of the short stories in "Get Off the Unicorn" called "Thorns of Berevi", one of her attempts at soft-porn sci-fi, which was popular at one time. AM did change the some of the basic premise of that short story- namely that which earned it the classification of soft-porn, I won't elaborate further for those who haven't read the story. Overall it was a pretty good book and I enjoyed reading it. While she finished the immediate story in the book, she also left some aspects open for possible further development in additional books. I prefered this variation of the story over the original. I would recommend it as an enjoyable book to read. -Helen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 1995 15:55:10 +0000 (GMT) From: jc-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk (Jerry Cullingford) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Dragon mutation Message-ID: <9506161555.AA09270-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk> > > Subject: Re: Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern > Fax lives throught the duel? If he > lives he remains Lord of Ruatha, Lessa wouldn't try to claim her > heritage and have to renounce it in favor of Jaxom, which means that > Lytol would not become Lord Warder....etc....etc....etc.... Hmm. Tricky :-). Maybe if he's forced to renounce Ruatha formally after the duel - unconditionally, since he thinks Jaxom is alive :-) - then you can salvage the plot without major damage (other than having a would-be conquerer around - Oh well, maybe he gets to die off-camera attacking somewhere else or gets kept around as the arch-villain or something - maybe you could substitute him for Meron if you wanted to keep the character count down). > I wonder why AM would let them change such an important event? I smell PC for kiddies - You can't have the Good guys killing people any more. Feh. Maybe it's an extension of the Terminator 2 attitude that killing people is wrong but maiming them is OK.. To stray back on topic :-) if they're up to doing Pern movies, then they could certainly do some Misty ones - although most of the stories would be a bit complex/too long for a movie - A TV series might be fun though - The Tarma and Kethry stories, would probably suit that format, since they're reasonably episodic. _By The Sword_ might work, as well. The Di tregarde books would probably make good movies, but most of the Valdemar trilogies would be tricky - too complex to cover well in a movie, too integrated to make good standalone episodes. Something along the lines of the full version of _Shogun_ (several multi-hour episodes) might work. -- _|_ / | Jerry Cullingford jc-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk (Work) \_|_ jc-+AT+-selune.demon.co.uk (Home) \__/ Hemel Hempstead, UK jerry-+AT+-shell.portal.com (alternate) ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 49 ********************************
