Since most of you said that you would like to see this list. I will start posting it in pieces. Not sure when I will start it. The list that I have (actually I'll be working off of 2 lists) contains 99 entries, I am sure that some will be duplicated, but will do my best to avoid that. Don't want to take up to much band width and have a real long post with all the titles so again, maybe I will send like 10 a day or week, depends on time constraints. Have a great weekend. Well, I'm almost up to the S&S story (two stories to go!) so I can't comment on how it reads, but I can tell you how it was thought up! I got to talk to her co-writer at the Fantasy Worlds Con last Feb and Elisabeth (who is a dear, dear person) said they came up with the idea while swimming laps in the pool at the con the previous year! If I thought it would mean I could co-write a story with either of those two gifted folks, I'd definitely take up swimming. Co-writing a short story seems like a lot more work to me than co-writing a novel. In a novel, you each could be responsible for a chunk of it -- the history, the plot, first drafts, or whatever -- and there'd still be plenty for the other writer to do. But short stories are so....short! If this is a good story, it's proof that both of these ladies are incredibly talented. It takes a lot to be able to work seemlessly together in something so small that there's no room for mistakes. --Tamra H. hart-+AT+-best.com http://www.best.com/~hart/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 1995 14:33:00 +0800 From: Gary Thean To: Mercedes Lackey Mailing List Subject: Gating question Message-ID: I have a question about Gating, and I sincerely hope that it hasn't been asked or answered here before. In Magic's Price (3rd book of LHM), when Savil Gated to k'Treva to get Starwind and Moondance's help on removing the leechblade from Vanyel, she was able to get back part/most of her energy by collapsing the gate. My question is, why wasn't she able to do this before? Like after her first trip to k'Treva, when she brought Vanyel to the Tayledras Adepts? I hope this is not an example of our favourite author changing her mind in mid-trilogy... I hope what I wrote make sense, since I just finished my finals, and I haven't slept at all last night. IMHO My interpretation of this was that she was able to do this because she used the doorway of the chapel as a support to build the gate on. By using a well known area and the support of the doorway, she was able to draw the energy back out. Without a support like that doorway a mage is unable to withdraw the energy placed into it for all of it is used up in the creation and then closing of it. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 1995 18:07:49 +0100 From: mel (Melanie Dymond Harper) To: mercedes-lackey Subject: FAQ: admin stuff Message-ID: <9506231707.AA08324-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> >From the number of misdirected unsubscribe requests in my mailbox, it looks like it must be time to post this again: Mercedes Lackey Mailing List FAQ -------------------------------- ============================================================================== Part 1 of this FAQ, which deals with administration of the mailing list, will be posted approximately monthly to the mailing list. Added information about 'POSTPONE' setting. Changed feedback address. Swapped bibliography and administrative parts of the FAQ (admin now part 1, bibliography now part 3) New in version 1.4: External group information removed (now in part 5 of FAQ) New in version 1.3: changes to external group information. New in version 1.1: information about release form; way of getting release form; 'new in ...' list. 1. What is this list anyhow? ---------------------------- This is a mailing list for discussion of the works of Mercedes Lackey, including both her fantasy and non-fantasy work, either solo or in collaboration with other authors. It is currently unmoderated. 2. How do I subscribe to the list? ---------------------------------- Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body SUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY your name If you have problems with this, contact the list owner (see below). 3. How do I unsubscribe to the list? ------------------------------------ Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body UNSUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY Again, if you have problems with this, contact the list owner. 4. How do I send messages to the list? -------------------------------------- Messages for the list at large should be sent to mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk (rather than to the list processor address) There is no requirement to follow any threads that may already be in progress. Feel free to start discussion on anything you like -- as long as it's at least vaguely relevant. Flaming, and rudeness in general, is strongly discouraged. 5. I'm getting too much mail from the list. Is there any way to cut it down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. Assuming that you do not want to leave the list altogether, mail the list processor (listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk), subject blank and message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL DIGEST If you would prefer not to see copies of anything that you have sent to the list, use the following message body instead; SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL NOACK (Note that these two options are mutually exclusive. To return to normal mail from either of them, use the message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL ACK instead.) If you will be absent for some time, you may wish to consider the POSTPONE setting. This is like NOMAIL for lists run under Listserv; you remain subscribed to the list, but do not receive mail from it until you specifically request to start receiving mail again. To do this, send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL POSTPONE - to cancel it, use one of the options above (ACK, NOACK, DIGEST). Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. 6. I've written this really great story in one of Misty's universes. Should --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I post it to the list? ----------------------- No, please don't. Reliable information (Judith Louvis who runs Queen's Own, the offline Misty fan club), indicates that you MUST get permission from Misty, in writing, before writing fan fiction in Misty's universe(s). Since I, as list owner, have no way to verify that you have received such permission, a decision has been taken not to allow posting of stories on the list. What you do between yourselves is, of course, entirely up to you. The release, however, is not valid for online fiction, only for printed fiction. As far as I am aware (as of 6th July '94) there is no way of getting permission to release fiction in Misty's world(s) online. A copy of the release for printed work is available from the listowner on request (private email; please don't post requests to the list). 7. Who is the list owner, anyway? --------------------------------- All problems, or queries about the running of the list, should be directed at Melanie Dymond Harper; mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk -or- mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk The second address should only be used if mail to the first address does not get a reply (this most likely means either the site is down for some reason or that I'm away - if the latter, the second address probably won't help either). Do _not_ send problems and such to the list at large. If it's something I've done, or not done, they won't be able to help you! I will try to announce any absences of mine in advance, so that the list members know if problems are likely not to be solved quickly. Any feedback on this post cheerfully received at mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk or mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (end part 1 of 5) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jun 95 13:10:44 EDT From: TAMRA SPIELVOGEL To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Birthdays Message-ID: <9506231715.AA08691-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARRA!!! This may or may not be relevent. I can't remember if it was in Oathbreaker or one of the several short stories about Tarma and Kethry. As I don't have my books with me (I just hate it when something I want is 3000 miles away in California and I'm stuck here in hot, humid, Virginia), someone will have to check. But, I seem to recall that when Tarma's clan was going to be declared dead in front of the council (or whatever it was called) because of lack of members or something to that effect, Kethry spoke up and said that as a mage she could prolong her life to increase her child-bearing years. That way Tarma's clan would have a solid core group and would not have to be declared dead. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please. Hurrah!!!! No more field work for an entire month. Maybe now I can write and publish before my boss becomes upset and realizes that I'm spending more time talking about Tarma, Kethry, Valdemar, etc. than working. Happy virtual birthday to all.
