I'm back from visiting New Orleans (took my kids down to visit their Dad and step-mom, and got a free trip out of it!) and I've finally caught up on my backlog of e-mail. Rhonda asked: >If Kethry took it upon herself to have lots of children so Tarma's clan >could start anew (even magicing herself so she could have kids for a >longer period of time) wouldn't her children be interbreeding and be >genetically screwed up after a few generations? Does anybody remember >reading anything about some other women and men taking part in this >regeneration project? I don't. Since I've been re-reading BTS, I was able to find the answer to this one in a jiffy. When Tarma and Kethry are explaining to Kerowyn that she has a much larger family than she thought, Tarma told her that "when the core group claimed the herds, we added adoptees from other Clans, orphans and younglings who had some problems and wanted a fresh start. Tale'sedrin is a full Clan; smaller than it was before the massacre, but growing. Kind of funny how many young suitors we got drooling around the core and the core-blood--but then, to us, a blond is exotic." Later in the book, Kerowyn thinks about how fast the Clan has grown, what with children claiming membership as soon as they were old enough to, and her cousins popularity--all but one took up group marriages. I don't think there would be a problem with inbreeding, because there is apparently intermarriage between the Clans. Of course, Kethry's kids seem to stay with Tale'sedrin, having their mates adopted into the Clan, but once it is large enough, their children or grandchildren probably won't feel obliged to do so--and will probably be very popular additions to other Clans. Does anybody remember > reading anything about some other women and men taking part in this > regeneration project? I don't. > I believe that although Jadrek and Kethry's children made up the "core" of the new clan, young people from other clan's joined them. I think in BTS it was mentioned that all but one of them had multiple marriages (this would spread the genes around too). As long as some of the people born to the Tale'sedrin marry/have children with people outside of the clan, there will always be an influx of different genes. And it was stated that the "exotic" blond looks of Kethry's descendents made them very attractive to the other Shin'a'in. And speaking of inbreeding, both the Shin'a'in and the Hawkbrothers (one group had five clans; the other four clans; can't remember which was which) probably started out with fewer than ideal number of people for a thriving genetically diverse population. (I wish a could remember more of my college genetics now). Anyhow, even though both groups were (by choice) isolated, they did have interaction with other people besides themselves. To get back to the original question, I would think that there would be enough marriage outside the immediate clan to to produce inbreeding. Also, as professional horsebreeders, I would assume that all the Shin'a'in know the risks of inbreeding (the effects on inbreeding were known long before modern genetics was even a hypothesis) and would take precautions against it. Got hoist by my own petard though, because he said that he'd only write one if I did . So, I rolled up my sleeves, powered up the computer and wrote one. Question 1: Is anyone else going to the WorldCon in August? Question 2: Who else has written a short story for the competition? David. Message-ID: > > ALSO, in WOC do we find *proof* of reincarnation to Companions when > Gwena starts to say "Vanyel and Sayv--" then corrects herself to say > "Savil"?? > Nope - just some more supporting evidence :-). The only person who's ever stated it as a fact is one of the characters in _Storm Warning_ - and he didn't *know*, just assumed it matched a similar case. People (and Deities) who presumably *would* know, have said things consistent with the idea - but have never, so far, come right out and said "heralds come back as companions". It's the explanation that makes most sense, and the one I support - but it's just vaguely possible some other explanation could explain things equally well. (and it can be amusing trying to come up with one...). So far, the closest we've come to confirmation from someone who should *know* intstead of speculating, is the Star-Eyed's chat with Tarma and Roald(?) in _Oathbreaker_. But even that is mildly ambiguous - she could send lesh'y'a Kal'e'nedral back to match Companions, but that doesn't necessarily mean all, most, or even any Companions need be reincarnated heralds. -Jerry (At home) ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 58 ********************************
