It was only when, a couple of months ago, the off-topic posts were forming a large part of what was already (at that point) a very busy list's traffic, that I felt bound to step in. Anyhow, I'll add to the off-topic noise by noting that a GIF of the top layer of our (Graham's & mine) wedding cake can now be found as a link from my home page (http://www.herald.co.uk/~mel/). It's quite large -- 80K -- but it's sort of unusual, so I thought people might be interested. :) Cheers Mel. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jun 1995 08:32:40 -0400 From: SBuskirk-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: SFBC: The White Gryphon Message-ID: <950627083239_79180554-+AT+-aol.com> Hi Viv! I haven't received that catalog yet, but a while back I got frustrated and wrote and asked them to send me WG. I got back a cute little postcard telling me that it "is not currently available" but it will be soon, and they are grateful for my business. Huh. They ought to be, they get enough of it! Most books seem to come out fairly quickly--Anne McCaffrey's new book is already available, for instance. If I had to guess, I'd say there might be problems between DAW and Misty over the book club editions--I read somewhere that authors usually don't get a percentage of the book club profits, and that tends to be a major bone of contention, especially with well-established authors who have done well for their publishing houses. (If a cheaper book club edition is available as soon as the hard-cover version is, which one do you buy--and who then gets all the profits? Yeah, I know--me too.) I finally got frustrated and went and bought WG at Crown. Of course, now it doesn't fit with all my other book club books.:-P Then again, if I'd waited my turn with the library, I'd still be waiting. At least this way I finally got to read it. Well, one place you can see actual fights, swords and all, is the Society for Creative Anachronysms (SCA). Sorry if I butchered their name, I've only been exposed to a few members. I've never actually gone down there, but according to a flyer I picked up recently, they practice at a local park here in Phoenix. Since the SCA is all over the country, there may very well be a chapter in your area, and they will probably be having tourneys and so forth on a regular basis. Isn't there a few SCA members on this list? An alternate method is to find someone who's equally interested, either buy a couple of cheap ($50) swords at a junk shop, or get a couple of good sticks, and practice some careful, light swordplay. Make sure that if you take this route, the person you practice with is level-headed and not easily carried away with excitement (same for you). It's very easy to get hurt doing this, but if you are cautious, you can get a really solid idea of what swordplay is all about. Finally, check out the yellow pages under martial arts or Karate. Look for Budokan, I think. One of the weapons styles. I don't remember all the names of the different weapons styles without looking it up. Anyway, you can call them up and ask them when there will be a demonstration, or if they know of a tournament or demonstration. If they don't, call another. Someone is usually having a demo or tournament, there should be at least 2 a year in another medium sized city. Most often they are sheathed weapons, but you can still get a really good idea of what swordplay is like, as opposed to the totally choreographed version you see on T.V. Hope this helps. I've seen swordfights at tourneys before...so I guess you're suggesting I go up to one of the fencers or heavy-list fighters (those are the ones in full armor, big shields, and taped-up 'swords'), and say 'this is the situation, help me work out how this ending would come about'...? I usually stick in something of what's going through the combatants heads, and add in all the little uncomfortable bits like sweat in the eyes and not remembering a whole lot of the battle afterward because of the adreneline. But for me, almost all of the battles are with either knives or just plain fists, because that's the only kind of fighting I've done (and hence all I can describe) and I'd be a little stumped as for swords.
