When the moon is full, I like to lie around and sleep all day, only waking up to eat. ...er, come to think of it, I could quite happily do that all day any day. That, and muck about on the computer; so maybe I'm not a cat, 'cause they can't type. :) Totally, utterly off-topic: My cat, probably the most popular thing on my Web server, got an electronic postcard yesterday (if you haven't seen this facility yet, it's at http://postcards.www.media.mit.edu/); a picture of a rainbow trout, with the subject "dinner" :). I sent one back to the woman who'd sent it to Mitzi, with a picture of Monet's waterlilies, and the subject "somewhere for dinner to swim" ... ObLackey: um, none. oh well. But it is quite a stretch from there to assuming that they actually exist. That said, there is a documented case of a werebear on Velgarth: Tarma and Kethry run into her in one of the short stories. She was once a classmate of Kethry's who went paranoid-insane and found ancient magicks which turned her into the shape of a bear, but also slowly robbed her of her humanity. Or a whole summer without it, for that matter!) To get back to topics--Kero vs. Alberich as a teacher? Hmmmm, I think that that would depend upon your goals more than abilities. If you were going to be a mercenary or regular army soldier, probably taking part mainly in formation fighting, that would be one style. If you were going to be like Talia or Elspeth, probable targets for assassins, you would need the more rough-and-tumble, acrobatic style Alberich had Skif show Talia, and also showed Elspeth (the simple counter/exercise in *AoQ*, remember?, and that Kero and Skif were remorselessly drilling into Elspeth at the beginning of the first *Winds* book. I don't recall anyone saying anywhere that one or the other had specialized in one style to the exclusion of others. Kero started out as a merc, and Alberich in the Karse army, right? Yet neither was rigidly sticking to "only" one style of teaching fighting--which is what made both of them far superior teachers to what's his name in the first Vanyel book, a former regular vet who only knew one way, and insisted on it to Van's detriment (although it certainly advanced the plot). In his defense, I should add that he later admitted as much to Van, and asked to be taught the other method. What *I* would like to see addressed in books of this type, would be how someone would teach someone who is physically handicapped to fight/defend oneself. I freely admit, being as personally committed to non-violence as I am in real life, that I am not going to take a class (and if anyone wants to debate this with me, let's do it privately and not take up a lot of listwidth). BUT, I have no idea what I would do if I was walking with my (handicapped) husband John to our car and someone threatened HIM. And while he is a sensible person, I do worry about him sometimes when he goes out alone. Just his falling down can break bones that take forever to heal. I hoped that that would be developed further with Kethry's love, since he was lame--but I suspect that "lame" isn't the same as "crippled" or "physically challenged" or whatever term is currently PC. Kethry could "ease" a lot of his problems, but Tarma noted that joint-ache, which I presume is a term for arthritis, was not able to be helped/cured in that way. Please forgive me if I sound a mite testy/cranky, but it is a concern, and one not really addressed in literature of almost any type. Scifi/fantasy helps us to expand our perceptions in so many ways; why not in this? How are the handicapped commoners treated in Valdemar? Would Skif know them as beggars? Where was that lodge, exactly?--Tarma S. remarked in response to my mention a while back that Kethry hadn't ever been to Valdemar, and she said something about the lodge where Kethry and Tarma had their little meeting with King Whosis, his wife and baby and Herald Roald (do I have that name right?) was inside Valdemar's border, so Kethry had been in Valdemar. Um, no, I disagree. I think that the lodge was on the *other* side of the border, NOT in Valdemar, because of the protections against outKingdom magic/mages which are still in force when Kero tries to take her merc company in years later; remember, Quentin couldn't bear to go with her. So Kethry hadn't been to Valdmear--and why couldn't she augment the mage teachers in Haven? 8^) Have a happy and safe holiday weekend, everyone! --Barra, who just got the CD for the *Rob Roy* movie soundtrack as a gift. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jun 1995 15:03:44 -0500 (EST) From: "Carmen K. There's some comment to the effect of that, to the trainees, it seemed that Alberich had spawned a female version of himself (Kero), to harry those he didn't personally train. Of course, training Heralds is a different matter from training a company of horseback skirmishers. Heralds do their fighting alone, so they don't have someone telling them what strategy will be used. They therefore need to have more of the individual's tactics and reactions drilled into them than someone who could spend their whole life without making a tactical decision. -jenneke I *am* family. (You weren't really suggesting that the Heir to the Throne of Valdemar would own property in Rethwellan, were you?) As for the anti-mage protections, according to an explanation in WoF, the anti-mage protections are part of the web that Vanyel set up, and only extends as far as there are Heralds riding circuit. Roald's lodge was thus inside Valdemar, but south of where Heralds regularly rode circuit. -jenneke I *am* family. How could I not have family values? Message-ID: <9506302329.aa13126-+AT+-punt.demon.co.uk> Well, Bara it's me again in response to your questions on Kethry and her every being inside the borders of Valdemar. The cottage was Herald Roald's hunting lodge or something to that effect. Now since both he was prince/heir at the time I believe it was just inside the border but still within Valdemar (what high council in their right minds would allow the prince to vacation outside Valdemar's borders). In addition (and I think this is dealt with in BTS) Kethry says something (to Kero, or maybe it was to her son the White Wind Mage) about those weird people in Valdemar. How when she was there, thankfully not far with in the borders or there for a long duration of time, it felt truly strange, as if she couldn't talk of magic or even truly convince Roald she was a sorceress. NOw granted I wish i had my books so I could quote her for you but someone out there should be able to back me up. Her feelings are of course backed up later on by Vanyel and Stefan. Kero _can_ do it, but teaching is not her metier of special talent. At advanced level, and for putting on the final polish, Kero is probably best. To use an analogy, the person who teaches you singing or a musical instrument does not need to be a concert viruoso; and usually is not. And concert virtuosos do not usually make good teachers of beginners. OTOH many virtuosos can give extremely valuable master classes, but you need to be at a pretty high level of ability (the basic techniques have to be thoroughly assimilated until they are completely unconscious) before you can gain any advantage from such classes.
