It says in Talia's orientation class that the Gifts are weapons - and we've seen that the Mage gift is a very effective weapon, and that Firestarting is as well. Talia used empathy offensively, but that was more as a punishment - how could the other gifts be used effectively in a battle? Some are fairly obvious on a large scale; farsight and thoughtsensing, for example. But how would they help you in a one-on-one battle - or, say, if two Heralds went up against a gang of bandits? Any suggestions? A bar of virtual Austrian chocolate (at least as good as Swiss!) for the best suggestion *grin* Also, a note on martial arts. I did a few months of Karate training once. I think the most useful thing I learned there wasn't any fancy moves, but the necessary attitude. Given any chance at all, run away. If there isn't -any- alternative, though, the person who is willing to take a little damage in order to inflict a lot is one who'll be standing at the end. [I learnt beause two friends of mine are legally blind; they can manage for normal purposes, but running away would not be an option for them] Velgarth doesn't seem to have much in the way of systematic barehanded combat systems. A bar of virtual Austrian chocolate (at least as good as >Swiss!) for the best suggestion *grin* Thoughtsensing would give you an edge by letting you sense what your opponent was about to do. Farsight would probably give you warning before the situation got to hand-to-hand. Fetching could do things like let you disarm an opponent. In general, though, I think that the Heralds rely more on their swords and arrows than on their Gifts, simply because Gifts require concentration... >Velgarth doesn't seem to have much in the way of systematic barehanded >combat systems.
