A) THERE might be a distorted folk memory of kyrees? b) perhaps mutant wolves once attacked humans c) some wizard might have been keeping a wolf pack with magically augemented intelligence and claimed they were transformed humans d) feral changechildren - if a changechild was cast out into the wilderness mutated further and then wandered towards more "civilized" lands but was psychotic from abuse that could start a few stories? e) kyree again - if a kyree pack had taken in a human orphan for a few years that could have started a story about humans taught to change skins by wolves??? we have seen kyree mistaken for wolves. I suspect kyree were originally wolves something like a dire wolf or another large canid - the Velgarth equivalent or a maned fox? Their retractile claws intelligence and mind speech could have been augmented by a human wizard tho I suspect they already had some form of esper talent - some canids seem to but not all! TWO - DISABLED I suspect companions would bond with disabled people if the disability was something they could block with their own magic or healers at the collegium could correct - remember the specialists are there! A companion could be the eyes and ears for the blind and deaf. Mindspeech could be boosted by a companion to the level it could replaced flawed speech? AS FOR HANDICAPS like dyslexia or hyperkinesis the companion could stop the neurologicla logjamming that causes some symptoms and slow down the hyperkinetic reactions that effect responses and cause allergies so that the dyslexic/hyperkinetic could enjoy the more benefical aspects - there are some advantages to hypersensitivity and synaesthesia and then theres hyperfocus - a companion could help you stay alert in hyper focus without burning out or experiencing the flipside of sensory overload when you come out of it. But what of those who couldnt get chosen? THE Talesdrin and some Shinanin would mind bond the diasbled to an animal partner I think depending on what the disability was? In other places the wealthy and maybe some religious orders that include mages might have access to healing spells ? WE HAVNT SEEN MindHealers outside Valdemar yet? excluding the Kaledin but other Healers - I suspect a lot of healer/empaths end up in religious orders particularly in Karse. I think they have healers in Rethwellan? I also studied Shotokan, when I was studying at all, but we didn't have to announce moves. On the other hand, pulling punches was the rule, and making contact hard enough to actually hurt was not the Done Thing. The father of a friend of mine is a ludicrously-high dan in Kyokushinkai style. That seems to have a lot more contact, and somewhat heavier contact, allowed.
