Message-ID: <199507120732.DAA10990-+AT+-portal.dx.net> Hello everyone, I reallize that was a less than creative start, but hey, it's late and I'm tired. i thought I'd introduce myself to the list as a new member. My name, at lest to my friends, and I'd hope to count you all among them, is Lashoka. No it has no hidden or secret meaning, just letters that make a nice sounding name. it actually started out as the name of one of my SimCities. I am female, cacuasian, 5'3'', 125lbs. I have very short multi-sectrum [majority blond] hair, grey eyes that range in full color from slate gray to ice blue, and teal green when i am very upset. I am an avid reader, and prefer the fantasy/sci-fi genre. I am also an avid vampire fan, and will read just about anything about vampires, good bad or simply rotten. i hale from The Middle Kingdon, insipid shire of Borderdowns, or for those who aren't up on thier SCA geography, South Dakota, USA. I am 18, and will be going to college in Colorado next year, [anyone from that area?] in colorado springs at colorado college. I will be studying biology, for an eventual PHD in Genetics or Zoology. I started reading Misty when a friend picked up the Queen's arrows trillogy, thjen loaned it and Magic trillogy to me. I was hooked after the first 3 chapters, and have been devouring all i can find my Misty. We had both read her vampire novels and some other things by Ms. Lackey before, but the Valdemar books are both of our favorites. I have only the 2 and 3rd gryphin books to read, and the new trillogy to start. I would like to ask if there are any special categories for posting, spoiler rules, or other general list rules i should be aware of, and if some kind individual [or many individuals, I love to chat, and I love getting and answering mail] would inform me of any general list policies, or in-list quirks...:> [you wouldn't have any of those would you?] I have 1 cat, and a 2 genreation, 3 litter rat family, one SO, male, and a heack of a party-hearted sister. WEll, that's me, anyone who has any questions, comments or just wants to chat, converse, or welcome me personally, please feel free. As I said, i love mail......and meeeting new people....oh, I also write poetry, if anyone is interested in a sample, let me know....I'm always looking for creative criticism. The first ones were triggered just after Ma'ar's death, and the second set started just after he got stomped on the astral plane (or wherever it was). So maybe for the first set, he's drawing himself back together and learning how to survive in the Place Between Worlds (?), so the storms would gradually weaken as he gaied control. It's fun to speculate when you have zero facts. Indeed. Think I should have put up spoiler warnings for Storm Breaking? ;-) An unrelated question... we saw in Oathbound how a major demon broke through into Velgarth and very nearly attaining Demi-godhood. Tarma and Kethry barely stopped him the first time. Do the "established" religions move to stop such things with whatever resources are appropriate, or was it pure luck? If the latter, at some point (by Murphy's Law) some demon is going to properly break through, uncontrolled. Who - and What - would stop that? Certainly it would be a major event in the history of at least a country, and we've seen no mention of it. So, is Someone stopping them early, or has it actually happened and been kept quiet? That the explosion of all the Gate's would have reprecussions that could last for centuries. That is the reason that they moved so far from the site of the battles and Urtho's realm. Then it was explained in Storm that the effect could be measured by the placement of the original explosions which matched the locations of both Maar's and Urtho's castles. In the second set, therefore, a similar process could >be happening as his scattered awareness disrupts the energy flows. The first set were triggered by the simultaneous implosion of a lot of Gates and other high-energy phenomena that held Urtho's Tower and the Palace together. Ma'ar's death happens noticeably before these explosions. Also, the earlier implosion of a permanent Gate had nasty (though not as powerful) side-effects, I think. I don't think there's any reason to suspect that any fragment of Ma'ar remains, even in the Void. I also don't think his absence or return there triggers anything, because otherwise you'd've had mage storms around Vanyel's death, as well as ones several decades (probably up to a century) earlier, when Leareth began his operation. >After all, we'd otherwise have an entire Velgarth trilogy with bad things >happening which had nothing to do with Ma'ar/Leareth/Falconsbane... Well, Vows&Honor isn't a trilogy, but combined with the short stories I think it counts as one, and it *is* free of Ma'ar's doings. >An unrelated question... we saw in Oathbound how a major demon broke >through into Velgarth and very nearly attaining Demi-godhood. So, is Someone stopping them early, or >has it actually happened and been kept quiet? Well, Thalkarsh was hardly your typical demon, so I don't think there's really that much of a threat, first off. Second, there are stories of other demons who acted on the material plane, usually with less survivable results for their opponents. (See the Snow Demon bit in Oathbreakers.) Third, I would assume that established deities take notice when demi-godhood is attained at the very least, since Kethry so much as said that if he'd succeeded, they'd be able to find a deity who'd be interested in seeing him gone. Finally, I think that the story of what happened to Thalkarsh probably made the grapevine rounds of the Nether planes pretty damn quick, so any demons thinking of trying would think twice.:-) >Maybe that's what's in charge of Iftel. *grin* Well, I think here you get into definitions... Whatever's in charge of Iftel seems to do a pretty good job of pleasing most of the people most of the time. Does this make it a good witch? Can anyone see ma'ar bothering to tell his "servants" there's a bomb in the citadel? I suspect the remnants of MA'AR'S forces - those stationed beyond the immediate zone of destruction (lake evendim etc) probably became the barbarians north of the ICEWALL mtns. ??? We might well see ambassadors from the tribes showing up at VALDEMAR'S COURT begging the "evil" mages of the south for protection. That piece of speculation brings me to a second point - with Ma'ar gone who's controlling the northern tribes? I assume its possible MA'AR incarnate in one of his descendant's bodies organized alliances to attack VALDEMAR over the centuries and its possibles - the tribes may be still ruled by shamans descended from MA'AR? Will they try to attack now or beg for help - they may have a tradition that Urtho was the traitor not Ma'ar? Another idea - have any of the northern barbarians who had mind gifts ever tried to get over the mountains into valdemar and became chosen as heralds? The unknown mage - could it be one of Ma'ar's children? Horrid thought - maybe the reason the mage storms are returning now is cos MA'AR SOMEHOW WOVE THE ENERGY OF THE ORIGINAL EXPLOSIONS into the spell that maintained that other dimensional pocket he lurked in between incarnations??? The gods knew ma'ar's death would dissolve the spell maybe creating somekind of vortex channeling energy into the future??? Just some more idle speculation about valdemar from stormrose ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 75 ********************************
