Can anyone see ma'ar bothering to tell >his "servants" there's a bomb in the citadel? I suspect the remnants of Yes, actually. Ma'ar was still sane, remember, if very nationalistic and ruthless. According to _Storm Warning_, he was very good for his own people. He was sufficiently powerful that he didn't need blood magic. I distinctly got the impression that his torture of the gryphons was purely sadistic, and that he would not have tolerated anyone using 'his own' in that manner. His Kingdom was ruled by mages, with himself at the head, as opposed to Urtho's people, who were governed by anyone with the capability to govern, with or without the Mage Gift. Besides which, there's a passage in _Storm Warning_ that reads as follows: "Second, the texts themselves are the personal papers of a mixed group of ancient warriors. Some were - we think - mercenaries, and others were liegemen to a Great Lord of some kind. [...] We have gathered from the papers that this group was part of a much larger force; that they were cut off from the rest when their enemy gained an unexpected and decisive victory." I don't think that Urtho's people would have considered the catastrophe "unexpected", since many, if not most, of them had been expecting to lose to Ma'ar since the war began or before. Nor did Urtho have "liegemen", as he was leader by default. Also, Urtho's forces knew of the evacuation plan before the disaster, and it called for movement through two Gates, not one (one from their battle position to the camp, and one from the camp to the evacuation site). Finally, Ma'ar was perfectly capable of mindspeech at the time, to my understanding, and could easily have sent a warning before he killed himself. In fact, he could have used the energy released by his dying to boost a message to his commanders in general. If this sounds too altruistic for Ma'ar, remember that he was also fascinating 3 gryphons, which he would have enjoyed, and that he was at least as much of a nationalist as an egotist. Like Hitler, he did horrid things to the Other when he got his hands on them, but he raised his own people into an empire. >MA'AR'S forces - those stationed beyond the immediate zone of destruction >(lake evendim etc) probably became the barbarians north of the ICEWALL >mtns. ??? We might well see ambassadors from the tribes showing up at >VALDEMAR'S COURT begging the "evil" mages of the south for protection. I think the northern barbarians are probably also descendents of Ma'ar's forces, but those forces were a little large to assume that only scattered clumps of barbarians remained when they had mages perfectly capable of Gating with them. > That piece of speculation brings me to a second point - with Ma'ar >gone who's controlling the northern tribes? I assume its possible MA'AR >incarnate in one of his descendant's bodies organized alliances to attack >VALDEMAR over the centuries and its possibles - the tribes may be still >ruled by shamans descended from MA'AR? Will they try to attack now or beg >for help - they may have a tradition that Urtho was the traitor not Ma'ar? Power takes training as well as the gift. History requires literacy to remain accurate. I don't think the barbarians have either training (without Ma'ar's presence) or literacy, and even if hey did have a tradition of Urtho as the enemy, there's no reason why they would think of Valdemar as Urtho. > Another idea - have any of the northern barbarians who had mind gifts >ever tried to get over the mountains into valdemar and became chosen as >heralds? Oh, probably. > The unknown mage - could it be one of Ma'ar's children? Again, power, especially on that scale, takes *training*, as well as the Gift. Where in the northern wastes would this person get such training? >Horrid thought - maybe the reason the mage storms are returning now is >cos MA'AR SOMEHOW WOVE THE ENERGY OF THE ORIGINAL EXPLOSIONS into the >spell that maintained that other dimensional pocket he lurked in between >incarnations??? The gods knew ma'ar's death would dissolve the spell maybe >creating somekind of vortex channeling energy into the future??? Even if he did, it was a small fraction of that energy, since there had to be enough to turn most of a continent the size of North America (at least) into Pelagir country. If the storms were triggered by Ma'ar's death, then the visions of something echoing through time would have been inaccurate, because they strongly implied that the disaster wasn't preventable. If Ma'ar's death triggered it, then the disaster was preventable: simply keep Ma'ar alive. Finally, even if Ma'ar himself didn't institute laws such as the rape laws the Empire has, he and his did have the mindset of conquest and absolutism, which the Empire certainly does, while Urtho's people didn't. And the Emperor does have to be the strongest or fittest, because assasination is acceptable, if not often successful. Personally, I like the idea that the Empire is descended from Ma'ar's forces, because it reinforces the idea that treachery isn't inherited, since Baron Valdemar was from the Empire. -jenneke I *am* family.
