I guess we have the Tavern, the Market Place, Greek Chapter Rooms (yes I am a Greek- Phi Mu), the Quad and various other areas. It all depends on who you are and what you like. The Tavern is probably the most widely used. In book one of Arrows when Skif got into that trouble wasn't it mentioned that different groups (blues, Heralds/trainees, Bards/trainees, Healers/trainees) all have their own general haunt. You know somewhere were your likely to find a whole lot of them all at once. That's really what it seems like to me here at AU. Unless one can count the Graduate students' pub "sylvester's" (i think that's the name). I'm not much of a drinker, so unfortunately, I haven't been there very often. It seem that more of the non-science people hang around there so maybe it's a Compass Rose for them. I think that in general, the bigger the University, the more apathetic the students are. No profs or post-docs here play intramural sports with the students (although I AM working on it. A post-doc friend of mine MAY be playing for my hockey team next year!), but in at my sister's "smaller" U, she was playing pick-up hockey with fellow students AND profs (and more than one prof too!) > is anything wrong with the first two of these things, but I have > met very few deep people here, and very few scientists who like > sci-fi or even who like to discuss science and speculate wildly > outside of school/lab. I know of two excepting myself. One was a master's student here, the other a summer project student. I really, really miss them sometimes!! (They've both gone off to medical school). Jim, the master's student is the one who got me hooked onto the internet (he told me about newsgroups, from which I discovered this mailing list) and he also made me join the SFBC. I've been telling him all (well not all, wouldn't want to spoil it for him!) about Misty's books, and for his freebie (for getting me to join the SFBC), I got him "By the Sword" BUT I told him that he was not allowed to read it until he'd at least read the Tarma and Keth duology and maybe the arrows trilogy!! See, I know that once he reads Misty's books, he'll be hooked!! This mailing list has become my surrogate "jim" with whom I can just blab on and on about books, read about new (well, to me anyways) authors to try (all those reviews!). It's great!
